Why Does This Site Have So Many Curmudgeons, Negative Nellies and Just Nasty Poster?

I think it has to do with the nature of golf.  Its a hobby, and like fly fishing, skiing, and most any other hobby truthfully, the individual has two beliefs (at least in regard to posting):

1) Since it works for me it is correct, and

2) Generally folks in their hobby over-believe in their abilities and subsequently their opinions carry more weight regardless of the truth.

What I find most odd is this.  Harking back to #1, is that there can only be one way to be correct.  I think, and most of the fights occur in the instruction forum, the reason for Monte being so good is he gives you the basics and then the nuances are up to the individual.  At least that is how it appears to me from the outside.

The golf swing is very difficult to master and for some who believe that they have an understanding of the swing they can't accept other methods probably because they don't want swing thoughts that might effect their swing.

However, I think most here are like myself who understand some parts of the swing and are here to learn from others who may have a better understanding.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

This is the internet my friend. As much as many of us would like to think that we’re like-minded golf enthusiasts that share a deep passion for all things golf the brash reality is that this is still the internet.

I've been playing golf for over 50 years.

In that time, every single issue of golf magazines have had ads telling you that this club / ball / shoe / grip / glove / tee / and towel will revolutionize your game.

It's all BS.  All of it.

It's hard for me to keep my mouth shut when I see folks still falling for their bs.

@Lobby your post says it all (for me). I’ve been playing the game for 27 years and I spent the first 23 years drinking from the manufacturers kool aid fountain.  It’s all BS. I say buy equipment as you please but understand that there is no better remedy for poor mechanics/bad play other than proper practice and time.

Without additional commentary on the last two years of life, I'd say the ratio of good people on WRX is better than IRL. It could also be confirmation bias and the fact that the crappy people are often louder.

The phenomenon you're talking about is called gatekeeping. You will see it in pretty much any niche hobby and the only way to combat it is to be patient and welcoming of even the most basic questions.

I think you are certainly on to something here.

I've always found it interesting that the most heavily posed sub-forum (by far) on Golfwrx is the "Equipment" forum.   Just by that metric, we could assume that people are placing more focus on the tools rather than the activity itself.

Maybe it's what you hinted at:  Got a problem?  Throw money at it.

Honestly some of you guys should have been here like 2010 - 2012 time frame maybe (?). If you think it's bad now i honestly don't get it. Just stay off the internet then. This place is more civil than 99.9% of sites on the internet. You guys should see the snuff film discussion forum i'm on. LOTS of weirdos

For a few years the site reached a tipping point i think , maybe 10 years ago. But a combination of good moderating and good members stepping up and calling out bad ones. We went in the correct direction. I can't remember the last time i saw a thread that resembled any of the stuff we say a while back.

This is the most idiotic thread on on the internet...

Just kidding. Here is my real view:

1. Most of the time, most of the people are actually super friendly here.

2. Some of the time people are being friendly but have a dry sense of humour or don't communicate well in writing and the meaning of their post is received in a way not intended.

3. Some posters enjoy a bit of debate. It is all in good fun, but one party takes it more seriously than intended.

4. Trolls - some people just are.

5. Poor attempts to get in a zinger

6. A few people are jerks

All of the above describe me.

I agree with this site being cleaned up from years ago. Years ago I was on another golf forum that was really over the top. I think it was Golf Review or something like that. Racist, sexist or anything else was fair game.

There are people who probably spend too much time here, I have fallen victim to this from time to time,   They get tired of hearing the same questions or topics for the 50th time, they become annoyed, lash out, feel they need to put others in their place. “Use the damn search bar”.

Tiger threads used to be the worst, also Hogan and stack and tilt..  now it’s wedge gapping threads, more wedge gapping threads and threads about Brooks, Bryson and dialing back the ball and how distance is ruing the game. Tiger vs. Jack threads, or threads that start as something else and devolve into one of these will really trigger some drama.

There were no attacks at all and starting this thread whining about the “site” because your thread relentlessly promoting a “medical” treatment was locked up is a little disingenuous.

Here is a perfect example of what I am talking about. Look at the presumptive attack on me personally.

I am mostly a reader here and a seldom poster.

I did start a thread to help people that suffer from golfer elbow

and both wanted the thread closed and thanked the mod for closing it.

I read a lot of threads and can't believe the amount of negativism.

Many of you have made great points.

So many people are just plain negative.

In the words of a person of our time, "can't we all just get along?"

lol
