Ryder Cup US Course Selection

I agree with the gist of the OP’s remarks. I basically said the same thing before the 2016 match at Hazeltine. The weather up here can get worse and maybe it will take a bad experience at some point to make them rethink their choices(?) Bottom line: they were very fortunate in 2016 with the weather.

The issue has been pointed out by Solomon, BNGL, and others - it’s the PGA of America running it. Not the Tour. If the priority was winning, we would see things done to make our team comfortable:

1. As pointed out, warmer weather, southern courses (Bermuda), and so on.

2. Less extracurricular activities during the week.

3. Player input into team pairings. (Which was a big point of the Task Force.) We’ll see how that goes this week.

I could live with a different name on the cup/trophy if the Tour decided to go rogue and ditch the PGA of Am and create their own comp with the Euros.

Um...the Ryder Cup sole purpose is an income generating event.  Its an exhibition.  It has no bearing on player legacies, player rankings, earnings, etc.  It doesn't 'count'.  All its there for is entertainment for the viewers, a week's worth of kissing butt to corporate sponsors, and rewards for PGA of America members.  And generating money from ticket sales, merchandise/concessions, and sponsorships.  The golf is secondary to all of those things.

I'm sure the PGA of A would liike the bonus of Americans winning on their own soil, but I think you're 100% correct that they don't really care if they win.

This post here. The rest of the thread is just noise, frankly.  Interesting noise, but noise nonetheless.

I would take issue with one point though.  They get a good year's worth of butt kissing corporate sponsors in.  They just do it over the course of one week.

The better question is why are all US RC venues in the north?

Kentucky (Valhalla) and Kiawah are the only Southern courses I can remember. The next 2 venues are all in the north.

Sawgrass would be perfect.

I did not include Sawgrass in my list of courses because that is the one course that even Euro’s that do not play on the PGA Tour know as all of the top players play in the Player’s. My first choice is TPC Scottsdale and I would swap the 9’s so they always play what is normally 15, 16, and 17. Could you imagine the Stadium surrounding the 16th if it was the Ryder Cup? There would be a huge adrenaline rush as you go the back nine.

In light of the comments, is it time the PGA Tour says to PGA of America we are taking full control of the Ryder Cup and we will provide you with X number of dollars from each Ryder Cup the PGA Tour runs? I was very disappointed when the Ryder Cup committee was created and the issue of course sites was not addressed. If we are playing in the US, we need to have the Ryder Cup at a course where the US team has home field advantage just like the Euro team does when it is held in Europe.

Of course, they can't simply tell them because they can't take control.  Silliness.

Hazeltine was a great home game for the U.S. What are the great home game Ryder Cup sites you claim they've had in Europe over the past many years?  Crowds and course setup = home game, but really --- they are all pros and best of the best, period.  It's not the course that makes the difference.

It's the course between their ears that matters.

LOL, all of the sudden the PGA Tour knows how to do it all around here?

The highs in Milwaukee this weekend are 76, 67 and 72.  They're playing in Wiscy in Sept., not January lol.

It is not just about high temps. What is the temp before sunrise and near sunset. It can get cool, especially if the wind is coming off of Lake Michigan. They are going to be bundled up when play starts. Not exactly the short sleeve and shorts weather they are used to at their South or Central Florida Homes.

Don't most, if not all of the European team, own homes and spend a significant portion of the year living in FL anyway?

With the Wx as forecast I don't see it as a tilting advantage for Europe.

I'm not a fan of WS because it's a gimmicky Dye course and a terrible venue for spectators.  So sh...ty in fact that spectators stand in bunkers to watch.  It's going to be interesting to see how they manage crowds when there is comparatively limited golf being played as compared to a normal pro event.

Not really. A few now live in the US full time but many rent a home to use part of the year when they play in the US and have homes in their home country were they are raising their family and spending much of their off course time. Growing up they learned to play in the cooler temps.

The forecast is calling for temps at at 58 degrees at 9AM tomorrow up here.  Its supposed to be over 70 by mid-day and stay over 70 until sunset.

They'll have a windbreaker/sweatshirt on for the first couple of holes in the morning matches.  Big deal.

Weather is not going to be a factor at all the entire weekend.  There's a slight chance for rain up here Friday night.  But other than that its literally normal temps/weather for Wisconsin in mid-Sept.

Actually that's really comfortable outdoor weather. Great for hiking, biking, running and golf 🙂

Absolutely.  The weather up here from about Labor Day through mid-October is actually some of the best golfing weather of the year.  Winds might be up a tick from where they are in the summer, but you get moderate temps, low humidity, and conditions are just wonderful.  It certainly beats mid-July when its 90 degrees with 75% humidity and a dew point near 70.

People keep talking like its mid-December and these guys are going to be playing in a blizzard.   Geez.  They're gonna have to wear a light jacket each morning for a couple of hours.

There's a slight chance of rain tomorrow night.  Otherwise, the weekend looks fantastic.   The wind is going to switch to the opposite of where it is now (from the NNW to the SSW), and if that holds the course will play much shorter.  I still contend this is going to be a major birdie-fest.

I've done this...in shorts, a tee shirt, and a baseball cap. Yes, alcohol was heavily involved, and it involved a girl and a bet.

Never ever going to see it at a TPC course. Which if you listen to some of the pros are all garbage courses anyway. Pat Perez was complaining recently that they don't get to play the best courses in the US, they play "Crap TPC courses" because the tour owns them. Because the PGA Tour owns the TPC courses, you will never see the PGA of America putting RC events there.

And why do you think there wasn't player input into team pairings?

Not for nothing, but wasn’t this RC scheduled for warmer months on the 2020 calendar before being rescheduled?

edit: original dates were Sept 20-22 last year so I’m wrong.

Well, I'd say you answered your own question.

"No, you're playing golf and you're going to like it."

They could handle a US Open, and I think they would he able to handle a Ryder Cup event. But it won't happen as long as the PGA of America is running it.

Whether you think they could handle it whether they really can or really want to are to are completely different things.

PGA will keep running it, so why whine about it.  That's life, isn't going to change.

Venues are fine.

Euros have mostly been hosting on . . . . . . resort courses - those are big home games for them because of the courses?  Nope.

Bethpage, Hazeltine, Olympic Club, Congressional - seriously what's the problem?

PGA taking suggestions for 2041, lol.

Americans arguing without really much good reason whatsoever about course choices for Ryder Cup - guys, we are a microcosm of what is wrong with the U.S. in the Ryder Cup!  It starts tomorrow! Get on the together bus!

Ben Hogan 1967

“Boys, there’s nothing to being the captain of the Ryder Cup,” Hogan famously told his players.

“You guys are all great players. Pairing is really easy.”

“I’m going to pair together you boys who drive crooked and I’m going to pair together you boys who drive straight.”

“And the first ball’s going to be hit by Julius Boris ‘cause he don’t give a s… about anything.”

“So y’all just go play your game.”

“You got these uniforms here,” he said.

“If you don’t like the way they fit or whatnot, don’t wear them. I never could play in somebody else’s clothes.”

“Doug Sanders, if you want to come out here and dress like a peacock, that’s fine. Whatever you want.”

“But let me tell you boys one thing – I don’t want my name on that trophy as a losing captain.”

Brilliant.
