Callaway Apex UW - 2021 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

Recommended Posts

Just bought the 19* last night.

It definitely gives me the feeling of a Hybrid vs a FW. It does sit way more neutral and sets up great! I use the Epic Speed TD so this fits my eye nicely.

Overall excited to hit some balls with it tonight!

I just got my 19° today and pulled the stock shaft…noticed that there is a whole in the hosel that goes directly into the club head. Is that normal? There was a white plastic plug blocking the whole which I have replaced.

Yeah. Callaway woods that dont use adapters should have a hollow hosel where you can see into the head. The white plug is to keep epoxy from going into the shaft itself, not from going into the head. To not do that you just need to be mindful and apply epoxy properly without overdoing it.

I picked mine up at my local Roger Dunn (World Wide Golf Shops)

This will be aiming at my 5 wood which is at 18*, so 19* should slot in well as I'd like to take off a few yards to fill the gap better.

Had a chance to hit the Apex uw vs the new epic super hybrid. Love the looks of the uw it just looks like a small fairway and doesn't sit closed. Hit it very well in the 19 degree head. I'll probably replace my 5 wood with one. Just need to find the right shaft.

Crap!   This makes me want this in my bag.   But can't decide whether to go with the 17 and replace my fairway.   Or go with the 21 and replace my UT iron.   Decisions, decisions.

This is kind of weird: Everywhere else has listed these with wood shafts. But PGA Superstore's custom options show it with only hybrid shafts. Weirder: Ventus hybrid shafts, black and blue, are both listed there with no upcharge.

I called to try to sort it out -- the customer service rep understood the discrepancy and asked the rep's supervisor. But the supervisor was no help at all and didn't seem to understand.

Sooooo... I placed an order for one with the Ventus Blue HB shaft. I figure one of three things will happen: 1) They'll just cancel it. 2) They'll offer me the wood version of it, for the price I paid. 3) They'll offer me the wood version of it, for the $350 upcharge listed on Callaway's website, which I would decline and tell them to cancel it. I told the customer service rep my exact thought process, and that I felt bad ordering something knowing I'm trying to get a $650 product for $300, but the rep told me to go ahead and we'll just see what happens, so ... I guess we'll see?

Edit to add: Since it's listed as no upcharge, it could be a made-for. But the Ventus Black was also listed with no upcharge, and unlike the TaylorMade made-for Ventus Blues, I haven't seen a made-for Ventus Black yet. I might have missed something though.

I am almost positive it is a wood shaft. Mine is coming in the mail today and I will measure the tip when I receive it.

Right, same here, I think it's just an error on their website. I tried to tell them that but the supervisor said it wasn't wrong, so, whatever! Interested to see what you find.

One further note on this weirdness, and I apologize for going a little off topic here, but just in case somebody watching this thread is more broadly interested in the sort of bigger hybrid/wannabe fairway wood options: I see PGA Superstore's website lists Ventus Blue and Black hybrid shafts as no-upcharge custom options on the Epic Super Hybrid right now, as well. I'm not aware of any made-for Ventus options that Callaway offers so I think this must be either an error or some sort of secret sale.

Rocco mediate just posted on his Instagram he is using the 19 degree and he put in a ventus blue 9x hybrid shaft. I don't know anymore lol.

I had each, the 17°, 19°, and 21°, in my hands tonight.

Unable to hit, as demos weren't in yet, but they each sit gorgeously.

I may be the most sensitive person any of you know to a closed club face. These do not have a drop of closed to them. Not even square. They are wiiiiiiiiiiiiiide open! Can't wait to get the 17° shafted up with a Ventus Red 9x. Hopefully I can get 4 Wood distance out if it!

I don't know who started this bit about Phil's Ventus Red being heavily tipped to get to .370, but Fujikura never said anything about that. They only made it clear that it was a wood shaft, and there was no Ventus Red hybrid shaft in the works.

The head said "APEX", and it was small enough that people assumed it was a hybrid, and thus the assumption was made by a few people that it had been tipped. The 2.5 inches bit probably came from someone who measured their own Ventus Wood shaft to see how much you would have to tip it to get to .370, but Fujikura never said a single thing about how much it was tipped, nor did anyone officially say anything about what the Hosel diameter of Phil's club was.

If they had, we would have known that this Apex Utility Wood was in the works, and with embargo dates and whatnot, it was better to not say anything and allow the masses to mislead themselves into making incorrect assumptions.

If I recall, the 2.5 inch tipped was on a build sheet posted by callaway

I put an Atmos Blue 8x in my 21 degree and took it out for the first time today. Really awesome club, super easy to work and flight the ball. Reminds me of higher lofted woods from the early 2000’s!

I've only got to hit it on my simulator, but man it feels and looks GREAT!!  Very neutral looking at address, seems very easy to hit.  I have no affiliation with the company, but I got to give a shot out to Discount Dan's.  I ordered this on Monday, custom 1/2" short with an RDX Smoke 80 Stiff.  It arrived today.......amazing.

I bought it to replace a PXG Gen 2 19 degree hybrid, to fit between my 3 Wood and 4 iron.  I hit 4 iron about 210, 3 Wood about 250.  This fits right in at 225-230, trajectory is more hybrid like, seems really forgiving.  I'll report back when I get it outside

Okay, I guess it is indeed tipped 2.5", but the tip parallel should be longer than that, now that I've had time to think about it. We should've realized sooner that it was .335.
