Who would win an 18 hole match:

  • Present-day Tiger using a set of ladies clubs or,
  • Prime Tiger circa 2001 but playing with only a 7 iron

I honestly think 2001 Tiger with a 7 iron would give it a good run and come close to winning depending on where the match is played. On a course like St. Andrews 2001 Tiger could definitely eke out a win where 7 of the par 4s are under 400.

But I think present day Tiger would win at Augusta given that he could walk all 18.

I think present day Tiger could bunt a ladies driver out there a decent bit past the 7 iron and manage his game a little better. I think 2001 Tiger would have trouble hitting a few of the par 4 greens in 2 and would struggle on holes where he's short-sided.

All I know is that I'll thoroughly enjoy watching him and his son play.

I would agree with this.  Course dependent I could see 2001 Tiger being unreasonably good with only a 7i.  The contrast between S Andrews and Augusta brings into play how much the course would contribute to this mental exercise

If you would have told me Tiger was going to crash his car going 80 MPH and shatter his leg into splitters and not only survive, but return to golf and in the same year tee it up at the PNC with CW and win by 4 shots

So Tiger and Charlie already won the event by 4 shots that hasn't taken place yet? WOW! How did they do last year? Appears you need less tw_focus.

Watching someone play a prototype ball is interesting? Must be winter 🤣

Doesn't need to be a prototype ball.  His swing speed is considerably lower.  Could just be playing one of the other balls designed for slower SS.

TGC just said that there great possibility that TW will have a new driver in the bag this week!  Stealthy time perhaps?

I would say 99.9% chance, all eyes going to be on Tiger. TaylorMade would no way pass up this opportunity for everyone to see Tiger playing their new driver. They are probably hinting very strongly to him about playing it.

I'll be watching simply because I'm rooting for Tiger to be healthy and enjoy this event with his son.  I know I relish playing in an annual tournament with my son.

But what I don't get is why anyone cares what club or ball he plays? Our games are nothing like his, so the clubs and this prototype ball has no relevancy to our games here on WRX.

Club ho’s on this site care anytime someone has hot new prototype equipment in their hands on tour.  Amplify that by a million when that person is TW.

The driver head is made for the masses, maybe not the exact degree or tour head he uses but people won't see that from a distance.

Yeah but knowing Tiger there's no way he'd just put it in the bag without testing that club like crazy. In fact Taylormade has a separate line of irons played by Tiger from the irons ever other Taylormade staffer plays.

Except that it is a prototype Tour B XS ball.

Tiger is really picky with irons, I understand where he is coming from too. Driver, he is much quicker to put in play, plus this isn’t that serious of an event for him to question putting in play for first time. He can fall back on Charlie’s drives.

We haven’t seen him hitting it on the range but maybe he has in private, it’s been under wraps until recently.

I’m actually more curious to see how Charlie‘s game is after a year. Really hoping we can see a big improvement.

Agreed. Combine that with the fact that what the best of the best trust to use in competition as a validation of the product's quality and utility, regardless if it directly applies to our individual games or not. With marketing telling you that everything being made is always the best with each release, the pros serve as a sort of secondary vetting to cut through that marketing. This works in multiple ways. Early and rapid adoption sends an immediate positive message to the consumer (see TSi3 drivers). Extended use through and beyond its product cycle does as well and creates higher demand in the secondary market (OG SIM, OG M2, 718 AP2, Rogue Fairways, G400 woods etc etc). On the flip side, poor/slow adoption obviously sends the opposite message, as does the frequent appearance of tour only products being used in lieu of the retail ones. Yeah this ultimately doesn't directly translate to much for the layman, but with the sometimes overwhelming abundance of options it can serve as a starting point for people that don't know what to choose. This is doubly true in the age of buying clubs blind online.

I don't understand how a member of wrx asks this question. I could understand if this was a Golf Channel discussion board, or ESPN or something like that. But this is a board that was created for people to see and discuss golf equipment. It's why 99.9% of us are here in the first place. It doesn't matter if the equipment in question is something we will play. The vast majority of us geek out on golf gear--period--especially stuff that is new.

I guess I don't have that gene.  I didn't think a pair of Jordan's would make me a better basketball player either 🙂

Golf is pretty unique though.  If you have confidence in your equipment, it can lead to better play.  If you have no confidence in the equipment, it will most certainly impact your play negatively.

Oh I agree. Which is why you should try all the driver head brands and shaft combos and see what works best for you. Not what Tiger plays.

As for confidence, I can confidently state that no WRXer has a game remotely like Tiger's and therefore what he plays is irrelevant to the game of a WRXer. 🙂

That might be true for some people, and I respect that. I do however blame every poor shot entirely on own brain failure.
