Wrap grips... Thing of the past?

Looking at different grips on many different sites, it seems like the wrap grips are disappearing more and more.  Rewind to the past and they were the most popular style when the greats played.  Palmer, Jack, etc.  Why?  Is there a benefit to a wrap grip?  Does they wrap grip almost serve as a reminder in that your hand falls into the same groove?  Just wondering everyone's thoughts.

Wraps were a thing when actually wrapping was all you could do - and then 'wrap-style' grips were offered to players who were used to that contour and texture.

Now that we're so far removed from the actual wrappings of old, no one plays them anymore because the people who were used to it are all getting older.

No real benefit to it besides nostalgia and 'thats what I've always played' which is less and less.

I moved from wraps when I realized they direction of the wrap was for right handed golfers (90% in USA) and as a left hander, it didn't feel right. Became a Velvet type grip user since.

Yeah, wraps only exist now for us leather grip players. They're available from Grip Master (Golfworks) and Best Grips.

I still like them even if they’re all fake wraps. The Golf Pride CP2 Wraps and Tour Wraps, Winn, Pure, Lamkin. A lot of good ones.

The GP Tour Wrap 2G is still one of the best selling grips if you ask any shop, and my favorite "under the radar" grip is the Lamkin Sonar Wrap. The style still has plenty of life in it.

Lots of good ones still out there, bit I agree with @third-times-a-charm that their heyday was as a replacement for the standard "real" wrapped grips that the previous generation was used to. Now 98% of off the rack clubs have some flavor of velvet grip and one is "used" to wrap grips enough to demand them. I really like the Lamkin Sonar Wrap though, and the Tour Wrap 2G is great for guys that don't use a glove.

I'm in my mid-fifties and still play wraps on my irons. Golf Prides G2. What I like about them is when I play in cold weather, mishit one, I don't feel that stinger.

Oh, and my 18 year old neighbor bought Golf Pride wraps for his clubs recently.

Does anyone know if someone makes a corded wrap ?

I have played midsized Grip Master wraps, the Golf Pride CP2s and Lamkin Sonar wraps over past years.  I’m now looking at new grips, and still prefer wraps.  I made a poor change to the GP Velvet plus4 and really miss both the wrap style and shock absorption.  I’m now thinking about Superstroke Traxion Wrap midsize since both Sonar and CP2 wraps in midsize increase weight too much.

My college team used to get these for free. That was 30 years ago but for the money I couldn’t beat them 😉. Very good grip though

True wraps.  Could acquire the straps and underlistings from GW and have a go with rolling your own.  Or scrounge up some old school Neumanns (with GP unders and collars) and transfer them over to another club(s).  Old school.  Not as difficult as perceived.  Lamkin also made quality leathers.  Believe that's what AP primarily used.

As for wrap "style" being no longer fashionable.  Seems as though most of the grip purveyors still offer multiple wrap options.  Many have already been mentioned.  What I note with wrap style grips, they're decidedly less "busy" with the graphics.  An aesthetic that I prefer.  I'm partial to the GP CP2 Wraps, as I have a preference for reduced taper grips.  The wear characteristics are very good.  Going on three years with a set, no reason not to get a fourth.  Have a Lamkin Sonar Wrap on a recently acquired 5 wood and it's a solid grip, although not "better" than the CP's.  Like to try the Crossline Plus Plus Wrap at some point.   From a 'bang for your buck" perspective ($4 per), can't beat Royal Perf Wraps.  Use them on classic clubs that see only occasional use.  Never cared for GP Tour Wraps though, the compound became very slippery with the least bit of moisture.  I tend to play without a glove.

Number of wrap options available, if one is partial to the style.  Nothing to do with nostalgia.  They're what I like and feel comfortable in hand.  Compared to a SS, or god awful Winns, it's no contest.

Interesting as I have had the opposite experience. I loved the CP2 but after a few months I was having wear issues. Switched over to the sonar and not one issue.

I loved the feel of a wrap grip, specifically a leather wrap grip.  I game a leather slip on grip from BestGrips but would definitely consider using the old Neumann Calfskin leaather wraps.  I do have enough I could grip a full set.  Hmmmmmmmm

When leather was the only wrap material, everyone used them, and created different thicknesses.  Some companies still make them, but they are limited.  I'd be surprised if anyone on the PGA Tour uses them.  But I bet some old guys on the Champions tour still use leather.  They provide a very different feel, compared to rubber and multi-material grips like my GP CP2 Pro and GP-MMC Align.

I remember Neumann leather wraps.  They were a very high quality and always had them on my putters, even after switching the rest of my clubs to rubber slip-on grips.

The original Grip Masters offered a wrap with a thin shock absorption film (I believe they called it shock-less) that was quite effective.  I do miss that model.

I agree with the old GripmasterUSA leather wrap.  Don't confuse what GripmasterUSA did compared to what Gripmaster (Australia) is doing.  GripmasterUSA separated from Gripmaster and became BestGrips.  I recently emailed Zach Sewill, who runs BestGrips, and the old leather wrap grip is not going to come back.  That was after I asked for a limited return.  Maybe if enough of us email Zach Sewill he might consider a limited run.  I'd buy a couple/three dozen.

I agree and Zach was great to work with when selling Gripmaster USA and today with Best Grips.  I still prefer wraps though, throughout my bag including my putter.

Transferred a 60+ year old Mac strap onto a Cleveland Designed By putter.  Using a GP putter underlisting I had.  A clean and lube prior to moving.  Have more straps, no more underlistings.  Always on the lookout for them.

Surprising how a well old leather straps rejuvenate with some TLC, become pliable and usable.
