Too Low spin in Titleist TSI2 3 wood?

golfer55082

Recommended Posts

I tried a Titleist Tsi2  3 wood, 15 degree loft,  with ventus Velocore blue 7x shaft of standard length. I hit it well but the spin is very low, average at around 2600 from 10+ shots. For the same shaft model on Ping g425 lst 3 wood, I can get 3300 back spin.

I searched and didn’t find documentation that Tsi2 fairway wood is supposed to be a low spin model. I really want to play it but the low spin gives me concern.

anyone playing Tsi2 3 wood has this observation?

Actually I was able to test it in a facility with TrackMan installed and got the following data. The spin is too low. As a result the trajectory is very low. I hope to get at least 90 feet max height for 3 w; the current height in Tsi2 would not carry over any trees or stop on the greens.

Yes, it is very frustrating. I really like the tsi2 3w and wanted to play it, but spin is too low.  I still wonder if it is just me or other people who use TSI3 3w have the same issue too?

Have you hit the Ts2 (prior gen)? I'm in the 16.5 Ts2 and it's spot on for me for launch numbers. I tend to use it more off the deck w/ only the occasional teeball.

The G425 is really a top performer in terms of launch/spin, maybe one of the best all around. A potential sleeper for you to check out is the Mizuno St-Z fw's. Great speed, launch and spin, more similar the to Titleists in terms of looks.

I switched to the TSi2 from the TSi3 because it was too low spin for me. Awesome off the tee but the TSi2 was so easy to hit all around and had no problem elevating the TSi2. Your launch is pretty low so I would chalk it up to delivery and strike.

I don't see anything in the design that would make it much more low spin than any other modern 3w head. Did you try higher loft? 16.5° perhaps? 9° is fairly low for launch.

I have no data to share, but I found mine (TSI2 15 degree Tensei CK Blue) hard work.

Strikes slightly out of the toe would go left (even started a thread about it). I guess the spin was too low for me too.

The Tsi2 is not inherently low spin, if you are getting low spin simply try more loft (ie the 16.5). Going to more loft will give you more launch, more spin, more height.

But before you do that, what balls are you hitting? Range balls or premium balls?

I hit indoors so it’s Titleist pro V1x rct golf ball.

I think the 4w might be the ticket. IIRC 1* of loft is good for ~300rpm. An extra 450 -500rpm will get you in a better window for both launch and spin, carry numbers likely won't change much, but it will be a more predictable flight

I have a 4W and have hit it into a green with great results: it checked up and stopped within 12 feet on multiple occasions

Good to know. I will definitely try 16.5 degree wood. This 15 one now rolls to 280+ yards, and very close to my driver. I use 3w mostly for on the deck and don't need a bullet in it.  I feel that tsi2 is low spin by design; bc it gets 500-600 RPM lowers in spin than G425 14.5 lst 3w which is same shaft, length and 0.5 degree lower/stronger loft.

Those numbers look like you could benefit from more loft, whether it be exploring the 16.5 head or turning the loft setting up on the sure fit (though that will cause the head to sit more closed).

While I didn't test the 15*, rather the 16.5* out against my TS2 16.5* (set to 15.75*), I never found it to be too low spin, low launch or unplayable.  I just found it to be a wash in performance to no need to upgrade.  Can't hurt to try out the 4wd as both the TSi2 and TS2 are very good heads.

There are several Titleist guys still using the TS2.  Don't go by Titleist website, but watch the guys on TV.  Did you try a 4 wood?  I find the newer fairways beasts of the tee, but not ideal out of the fairway.  Just my 2 cents.

Another vote for going the 4W route. I was having the same issue trying to get fitted into a TSi2 3-wood. My ball speed numbers are similar to yours and I deliver a bit more loft at impact. Still couldn't spin it enough to make it useful off the deck.

I ended up going with the 16.5* turned down to 15.75* in a Tensei AV RAW Blue 75X and am getting good height (105'ish) and around 3200 in spin. Also liked that the 4W head is more compact at 140cc compared to the 175cc 3W head.

Edit: also want to note that I ordered the 16.5 at 43" as I intend to play it as a 3W

Dude those numbers are screaming 4 wood. Considering your ball speed and carry distance, your launch is low, your peak height is low, and you're hitting it too far. The 16.5 degree head ought to be perfect for you.

Agreed with all the 4w comments for sure, lots of pros even go this route.

The thing to keep in mind with the Titleist vs. PING is the CG location and actual loft. PING has a reputation for leaning towards lofts that are higher than printed, and the super shallow face is always going to spin more, or rather NOT spin less via higher strikes since there is barely any room to strike them high. PING is also going to have a more rearward CG which means more launch and spin.

@golfer55082 You have lower launch, lower flight, and lower spin. This all points to a simple loft issue.

That is my setup as well. I have had good results with it, both off the deck and the tee.  it feels more versatile than a 3W.

I also have a Tsi3 5-wood with the same shaft, and it also gives me great results.

No. I like the Ventus Velocore blue profile and would be very hesitant to move away. I guess I will try 16.5 4w first. A good idea with ventus red though.

I went from blue 7x in g410 (tee monster but too low off the deck)

Just noticed your witb. I still play the same driver as you play, same shaft , same loft too. LOVE this club. I tried sim2, TSI3, G425 lst, and none can touch it!
