The newest 770 was a step backward from the og IMO. They took a true forged CB iron that performed great and wrecked the feel of it just to give it the faux muscleback look with the steel wallpaper. Their lineup lacks a straight up forged iron for solid, above average players. The MC is great, but one level too punishing for many players. Other companies, such as New Level and Sub 70 and Haywood, are now putting out better options for players who want to play golf with forged irons and are not into the hollow heads and stabilizing bars and activated polymer. I would like to see TM come out with a real contender in the forged iron category. All the tech irons don’t appeal to me except perhaps in the long irons. You can get a playable forged iron from Takomo Golf but not from TaylorMade. Same with Callaway — all tech except for their blades. It’s like they all think they must put all tech possible in all heads. It must sell or they wouldn’t do it but I am glad other small operators are picking up the slack. 

The way the 760 performs is why I have struggled to take it out of my bag. Such a solid iron imho

Got to see the new MB and P770 yesterday.  The MB looks extremely playable especially in the scoring clubs.  The 770 top line appeared slimmed down through some nice beveling.  I think TM irons fans will be happy with this release for sure.

 

To make things better, the new TM iron fitting system is incredible, allowing for loft and lie changes using a single fitting head.

Not asking you to spill all the beans about the new P770's, but you have to give a little more than "slimmed down top line". Did they change anything aesthetically? Does it look exactly the same but with the P790's satin finish? etc... 3 more months is a lot to wait without a picture being painted. Thx!

I agree with much of the chat about 750/760/770. I especially loved the 770. I do remember a lot of people not liking the feel of the 760 at the time, but it’s become something of a retro cult classic!

 

The issue is, in my humble opinion, launch monitor indoor testing. 
 

When I used to fit at a range in the days before LMs, irons would often be sold on feel and flight. If a guy went out with random irons, he wouldn’t really see exact distances and wouldn’t remember them even if he did. He would remember the feel of puring a Mizuno, or the trajectory of a particular club/shaft though. 
 

Now, fitting in a net, the Astro turf and indoor acoustics spoil the sensation of the strike. It’s all stats. I can give give someone an iron which has great dispersion, stunning feel, lovely flight and ideal spin, but they won’t buy it if it’s a couple of yards shorter than some goo-filled, strong-lofted, clunky thing.

 

Hence why the distance players iron is just such an important club to the OEMs now.

Wish I could offer more, but I got maybe a 30 second look at each club and some quick small talk with the rep before he went into the meeting with my head pro.  I'm not familiar enough with the TM irons aesthetics to notice any minute differences from the past version to this one.

 

It will probably already be leaked by then, but if not when we get our fitting heads in a month or so I will take some pictures and let those more in tune with these point out the differences.

Sorry for taking a couple of days to get back to you mon frer. Had COVID. Spent many days at the golf course and away from everyone and my computer. 😀

 

In any event, you've got a point. You can see some of TM's classic iron designs in the P7MC. Much better than the MB, IMHO.

 

But, I've gotta go back to the 750 protos as the best recent example of TM's ability to produce a decent players iron. Just one man's opinion.

I saw them a couple weeks ago. 770s have a slightly thinner top line and the aesthetics of the back look like the current p-790s. The p7mc has slightly less offset than the current model and a slightly thinned top line to blend into the mb’s. The MB’s are slightly thinner as well and they reworked the weighting in the back of the head a bit. They look phenomenal in my opinion.

What they should bring back is an iron that looks like some of the holy grail Adams forged irons produced right before TM bought them.  The pro gold and MB2's in the PVD finish were some of my all time favorite irons.

saw the new mb a few weeks ago, massive improvement visually compared to the previous gen, much less chunky top line but still not quite as thin as my 620 mb, I was a big big fan of the looks, didn't get to hit unfortunately but I'm sure they will perform excellently much the same as the current P7MB

You guys got me excited. I gamed the P7MCs this year while working on some major swing changes and I am dying to get back to blades. I wasn't feeling the P7MBs too much this year so decided to skip to this upcoming. Also, seeing how no one from the TM staff gamed them kind of solidified that just something about them weren't quite right for me either haha.

p7mb had chunky top line? I never saw it in person, I did the p730 and it’s top line was titleist blade thin. Weird they would do that.

The P7mb had a larger topline than the 730 imo, P7mb was not Titlelist thin to my eye.

I was shocked when I hit them to see what they looked like from the top.  Not the best MB's from Taylormade.  They felt solid, but just didn't look great, although for me it's not really an issue since I'll probably never have blades in my bag again.

If they could make the new 770 a teeny bit more blade-like while feeling a bit better, that’d be an absolute winner for me. 
 

At this point I’m between PXG T (like an uglier, better feeling 770) and Honma VX (like a slightly uglier 750/770)

regarding the 770s - did they say anything about tech? were you able to hit them?

I think people have mentioned the p770 changes are cosmetic only

I play the 730s from 6 - PW and their topline isn't quite as thin as the Titleist blades. When I bought them a few years ago, it came down to those two sets and that extra tiny bit of mass on the TMs is why I went with those. I'm really interested to see the new MBs once they are announced though. My 730s are a bit worn and I'm excited check out what will likely replace them. 

 

On that note, has anyone else gone with a mixed set of MBs and 770s? Last year on a whim, I ordered 3-5 in the 770s to add to my set and have not made a change since. A choked down 5 seems to fill the gap between a full 5 and the 730 6 iron oddly well.

I tried to go with the 770 same as you and it just didn’t work out for me. Was same spec as the 730s, just didn’t get along

For those who have seen the new P7MB/MC, P770 line, does it seem like any of those are close in characteristic to the T100? I've always felt that the P7MB/MCs were similar to 620 MB/CB but the P770 didn't quite seem similar enough to the T100 (maybe it was the sole width that made me feel like the P770 look more like a weaker lofted T200). Curious what people have seen/heard and what current non-TM club it would be similar to, if at all?

I read that but I can’t imagine them not using the new speedfoam and then moving some weight around?

This is not the case. There are technical changes including the use of the new speed foam. 

 

The ball speed is faster off the new irons. Whether you think that is a good thing or a bad thing is up for debate. Personally, I am not convinced that more ball speed is desirable since they are already tough to combo with the P7MC.
