Spieth over-analyzes every shot.  I truly believe most of his  poor shot results are from him trying to figure out every possible effect the wind, elevation, blade of grass and spin of the earth has on the shot and he never just hits the damn shot.  You're not that good.  Not even close.  JT is also getting this way.  Just make a quick evaluation and hit the shot.

No need to look like this guy every time you want to hit a shot:

IF YJS is Egbert Jr, what Looney Tune character do you associate with Dechambeau?

Mike Greller is a good dude.   He helps Spieth's mental foundation quite a bit more than we see via the camera shots, and it's very much a student-teacher type of thing with them.   Just a hunch....

Oh dear I hope we don't go down this rabbit hole for threads. Next thing you know we'll be the following threads

  • Phil needs a new accountant
  • Tiger needs a new chiropractor
  • Jon Rahm needs a new diet/workout regimen
  • Scottie Scheffler needs to learn how to hit a draw

Fantastic!  My next 4 threads.

All valid btw.

It still is, but Spieth goes thru a whole meteorological forecast and then goes thru the complete minutia of the lie and green conditions.  Pick a yardage and hit the shot!!!  While I'm still middle aged.

To be clear though, he's hitting very few poor shots.  The only thing he can't do right now is putt:

SG off the tee: .467 (26th)

approach: .643 (13)

around the green: .259 (39)

putting: -.386 (177)

tee to green: 1.37 (8)

Which is mind boggling considering how good his putting was in the past.

I believe his ST tee to green was #1 at HT and #2 at Nelson; that might have been during the final round of the Nelson I heard that.  Swing changes seem pretty solid right now.  During the weekend of the PGA I know they said he was 77/79 SG putting so he was probably hitting it good there too  Often times chasing ball striking leads to putting falling off.  I fully expect as Spieth gets more comfortable with the swing the Spieth magic around the greens will come back.

No Jordan is just fine, he will sort the putting out soon and the rest of his game is going in the right direction.

I agree with the comment about Rory though. Listening to JT’s post tournament interview is clear what a difference Bones has made.

I get a kick out of watching Jordan play. He talks to himself after every fuckup just like the guys I play with 😄

The big difference is that he does it before he hits the shot.  Followed by analysis post shot.   I wonder if Greller just has to smoke a couple after the round just to even it out?

Good thing Jordan's a pretty good golfer.  If he was an ordinary guy able to afford a caddie his looper would just tell Jordan to "Shut the f**k up".

Greller used to be a teacher... he should just tell Jordan if he doesn't quiet down he'll need to go to the Principal's office.

Otherwise Jordan seems to be a great guy.

exactly, pretty funny stuff.   he comes off as such a dork, it's sorta refreshing.

and watching greller react/try not to react is comedy gold

In the end reading greens is the golfers issue, not a second party.

Agree...if you need someone else to read the green for you, you will never be very good. But it is nice to do your read and then get confirmation of the read for confidence... If two people both read it wrong you weren't going to make the putt anyway.

At this point Greller , YJS might be the most successful current caddie /player partnership on the PGA TOUR. 3 Majors, 16 total professional wins. I'm trying to think of other intact duos out there that are that good. Brooks - Rick Elliot (maybe) , Ted Scott - Scheffler (eventually - maybe) , DJ - AJ (seems like a stretch IMO). I can't think of any that are in the same category. Jordan seems like a pretty good human. Only complaint about YJS was when he wasn't striking it that great or showing well, he was really giving Greller the lash. He's still the guy hitting the shot in the end, so the buck stops there.

Bobby Jones on professional golfers and caddies: During the rigors of a golf tournament a professional golfer will occasionally hit an errant shot. Instead of taking personal responsivity for the errant shot upon his own shoulders the professional golfer will oftentimes blame an outside agency such as weather conditions, turf conditions and many times he blames his caddie. Now the caddie profession is a very noble profession however some caddies give the profession a bad name. They show up at the golf course slovenly dressed with the smell of alcohol on their breath.

I used to caddie... though I wasn't old enough to have alcohol on my breath.  Did Mr. Jones ever have a cocktail?
