forgiving drivers

That for some reason are 45" + in length, standard. I always think if they are going to have a "forgiving" driver they should start on total length being shorter, not to derail the topic.

Also on the extra inventory front, in checking around it sounds like BH didn't keep a lot of inventory hanging around and only made up sets and components when there were orders for said items. There may be some demo stuff but it doesn't sound like they have tons of inventory available. Hope I am wrong as I would love a UiHi 26* 5 iron.

Already paid for pre shutdown?   maybe not refundable or something.  I'd imagine ads are placed fairly fair out in advance but I may be wrong on that.

Wondering if they'll have some sort of closing sale, although that doesn't seem likely given the site is down (and looks like permanently?). I find it hard to believe that they sold out of all their inventory and were truly backed up on supply chain issues for every new order, but could be wrong. Not a dtc expert, but is everything built-to-ship typically?

If there is any appreciable left over inventory they might leverage a liquidator ... usually how it's done.

Don’t know if this is meant seriously but I was taught that “whoever is in charge” is the proper usage there.  It’s would be different if it said “I’m going to fire whomever I can identify as being in charge.”

That clubs are not particularly profitable to retailers does not mean the manufacturers are not making a killing on them.

Mfr profit is so-so. Balls much higher.

Aldo keep in mind balls are recurring sales. Clubs people don’t buy but every few years or longer. (Except for club hos, which is pretty small market.)

Those were definitely special. I remember coveting them as a junior golfer with my knockoff Bob Toski irons (lol) hoping I could have a set one day. Those always felt superior to the models that ostensibly replaced them (Edge and FTX).

A lot of old US golf companies started their slow death when Hoffman Forging stopped their US production. When you rely on overseas production you  rely on the logistics and supply chain not being controlled in your own country. These niche brands barely hang on and the newer ones will only hang on as long as they can procure cheap forgings from open designs overseas.

I do know that nearly all the irons from big name companies were made by CoastCast. When I worked at Acushnet, frequently there would be a stray from Cleveland and others in a box of Titleist heads. I believe that Coastcast was a US company however. Same for Scotty Cameron putters, I designed and maintained a database that tracked the various processes i.e. anodizing, paint fill, inserts. I was able to locate exactly where each putter was at a specified time prior to final assembly at Titleist (Escondido, CA at the time).  When the Howitizer came out, the heads were hand counted daily.

The Hogan name meant something 30-50 years ago…sadly it started losing its meaning and place in the club market in the mid 90’s and when Spalding purchased them it was the beginning of their demise. Once Callaway took over the name, brand and market share had died. It’s sad really but we’ve seen it a bunch from the clubs from that era. The golf business is hard, staying relevant and cutting edge requires taking risk and constantly advancing, not resting on a legacy. I feel once those that knew who Hogan was and what he stood for with his company started to age the company aged with us.

I bought them from a local golf shop used for like $200, had them extended and never looked back. Then one day I decided I needed new irons when I was in college and have regretted it ever since. I've got a few sets in my eBay watchlist right now haha.

I have the Apex plus in my Hogan cart bag now. I actually found the 3-PW set in a Savers (thrift store). Awesome condition.  I ended up picking up a 52* Colonial wedge, 56* Carnoustie wedge, 60* Riviera wedge, Big Ben CS3 Driver, Big Ben C455 3W and BHB5-SS putter as well to complete the bag.

Hogan was in trouble under the current ownership for quite a few years.  I know a group that looked at their books 2 years ago and did a hard pass as it was obvious the licensing deal with Perry Ellis was crazy.

just in a general pointless search i happened upon the following low key announcement

https://benhogangolf.com/

it looks like ben hogan golf equipment is no more , kaput , gone and what a truly sad day , i mean i know for the most part it was a cash grab against the name but i did always hope it would remain as a constant ....oh well sad days come and go i guess

anyone else notice or even care one way or another ?

The recent incarnation was more than a cash grab against the name, if not least because they made good clubs without the garish plastic vibe of the big sellers.

How so? What should it have been?

Basically the licensing fee's. Golf's margins are thin and if you're paying a licensing fee on top of that it's even thinner hence why more than a few have tried and failed at reviving the Hogan brand of clubs.  I also don't think the name resonates with the younger generation of golfers like it does with mine so it has even less value.  I think if Callaway kept the Hogan name it could have been cool.
