Good. Good for him and good for Ping. Good for golf in general. Brysons play style is super particular to him and a small percentage of the market. Cobra gave him all they had, and probably had more to support but, I'm sure Ping is willing to take on the project as well.

We'll see, it's been like a week. Have to see what the agreement is too. Bryson also hasn't given them the crazy eyes yet lol.

I'm honestly shocked and intrigued by the i230's. There's no way PING was able to make a one-length version this quickly, right?.........

I have a feeling that (shock) Bryson got sucked in by how much easier gapping and shot-making is with variable length irons, not to mention how much easier it is to hit short pitch shots with a club that isn't 37.5". I could be wrong though.

Ping have different ctp port weights and tungsten screws, so making one length for them is easy peasy.

It didnt last long though lol

Looking closely at the i230's in Bryson's bag it does appear that the heads have been modified in some way. If you look at the spacing of the head weight screw and the club numbers it looks different than a normal i230 iron, almost looks like some metal was shaved off the sole near the toe and the head weight screw has been repositioned.

Yeah but nobody misses paying those $1000+ prices (back when retail was $399) for a tour issued driver and getting whatever shaft happened to be in the head. These days with what’s available retail, no need to search out ‘tour issued’ gear for the most part IMO.

Those titleist tour only/prototype fairway woods from the 970 on were just something so special. I’d love to get my hands on one again just for nostalgic sake but not at some prices I’ve seen. I’ve already got watches collecting dust I overpaid for! Darn Apple Watch ruined it!

Back in the day I swore I had a VJ R510 TP.  It was 10.5* and at least 5* open with a ShaqX shaft.  Needless to say I did not hook it.

Lol do you know how much weight you’d need to remove from a i230 PW at 37.5” to get to a manageable swingweight? That’s beyond a screw and some plastic.

Watch some of the YouTube interviews of Coach Mike Schy from several years ago, and he speaks about the Edel clubs during his college days, all the OEMs testing with Bryson for the PGA Tour and the final decision to go to Cobra.  He specifically says that Bryson went to Phoenix to test.  In addition, Bryson has a video with the Cobra tour staff where they both talk about the struggle to support him early on.  In my opinion Cobra/Wilson/Mizuno would struggle with present day Bryson, due to the limited resources they have for the various tours.  The big three club makers have the tour resources.  Ping has both the tour resources and the in-house engineers.   The smaller providers (Edel/Artisan) have limited/or no tour resources   Love him or hate him, this equipment deal will be interesting to follow.

Such an interesting bag. No fairways, and the G410 Crossover rather than the 425 or iCrossover. Plus, he dropped the Artisan wedges...

Somewhere around 25 grams of head weight difference between a wedge and what would be 7 iron. So find the lightest spec head, take away the tungsten toe and tip weight (probably close to 20 grams) and that’s most of it there. Than use the lightest ctp insert and you’ve got your 25 grams. In addition, if you look closely to the pics of his irons the soles have been custom ground so that would account for additional weight savings.

You're describing a method where it may be theoretically possible. You clearly understand club building, so can we both agree that while the construction of the i230 makes it possible, it certainly isn't easy. A team at PING likely took at least a couple of weeks to construct this potential one-length set for Bryson.

I spoke directly with a head engineer at PING a few years ago about how I thought, just like you, PING irons were a natural fit for one length given their construction. He partially agreed and talked about giving it a go with some G model irons but ran into some constraints, mainly due to distribution of weight. The summary was that, while it could be doable, likely a different model would need to be constructed to make one-length work well. This is a PhD educated guy at PING.

No doubt the tungsten screw and tip weighting that they are using now have made the task easier. Ping never fail to amaze. If it’s able to be done, they can do it. I remember seeing the things they were doing for Faldo and what Jim Wells was doing with putters 20 years ago that were unheard of being done at that time.

Interesting indeed.  However, when you average 330+yards off the tee like he does and never have more than 250 for your approach shots, you really don't need fairway metals in the bag.  Better off with more wedges to really dial in distance from 160 in for him.

Excellent call, you're 1000% right.  I was just thinking like how TM I think is driver mandatory, since Ping kinda made their name initially on putters that it would be as well

Maybe they are now, though.  He is in a Ping putter now.  So maybe we were both right in a way.  Maybe they havent always been, but are now.

Bryson played a Ping putter this week???

I don't know if they'll ever actually get him in a Ping driver, but Ping drivers are crazy forgiving so maybe he'll take a few less yards and take it in play?

Not that Byrson isn't LLOOOOONNNNNNGGG, but.....................

It is kinda "funny" to see him hitting a 18° iron 260+yards, but it has a "2" on the bottom of it instead of a "4" like his custom Cobras did.

And I mean this in no way as a dig on Bryson, just on equipment (which I love or I wouldn't spend so much time on this site) in general.
