What is the point of hitting a rising stinger?

What is the utility of the shot? 

There are generally two types, the rising one and the one that stays low. 

I can understand the latter (windy day and you essentially want to play a low runner) but why would you ever want to hit a rising stinger?

Good shot to have when you’re dominating your playing partners and you really want to just piss them off. Adding in a tiger like club twirl typically makes it even better.  
 

I really don’t know, I’ve never been able to hit a rising stinger.

The only functional point of one is hitting into a par 3 or approach shot dead into a heavy wind but still need to hold the green. It’s not something I’d use often as it’s high tariff. Courses with forced carries over water with trouble behind e.g. Celtic Manor 2010, where it gets REALLY windy, can call for it.

Hit from under the trees but still want lots of spin to stop it on the green?

I play courses with lots of mature trees put to make you hit around, if you can hit a rising stinger just under the tree and then up its useful.

I honestly love the rising stinger. Great shot for long par-3's or approach shots into the wind.

 

It's a shot that hits it's apex and then just drops and stops. Uber control.

 

I'll hit is with everything from a driver to a 50* wedge.

But how do you hit one.. Iwatched  Sergio Garcia hit one during practice rounds . Thigh high for 200 yards than goes to 30 feet before falling down..

 

Sure is different from Tiger’s stinger…

Exactly.  The high launch/spin days are gone and now the high launch/low spin fad is in for good reason.  The low stinger low launch/high spin, however, is still alive and well today on tour though and it's a really useful shot as a fairway finder or to keep it under the wind.

I don't think anyone would try to hit a stinger with a lot of spin, that just may be the natural ball flight for some.

If the goal is to cheat the wind, an ideal stinger is low launch and low spin, which you get from presenting less loft and a shallow AoA. But most ams do it the opposite, they play it back in their stance with a steep AoA to get the low launch, but then typically spin it more.

Half a lifetime ago I saw an Australia vs Japan pro exhibition (we went the practice day I think), I remember being enamoured how the Japanese pros could hit these low balls have them rise and land on the greens, never mastered it myself.

A low stinger is better than a high stinger, but the high stinger is still noticeably lower than a full shot.

 

Usually, a high stinger means I compressed the ball more than I meant to, and increased spin.

... I played with a guy last year in town to qualify for the Phoenix Open and he has won several times on the Outlaw Tour. He was averaging around 350 off the tee. Yea, averaging 350 and hit one 379. He hit this rising 3 iron stinger around 290 because the ball won't stay in the air for 275 yds if it doesn't. It would start out low and rise to maybe 30 feet and then just carry for what seemed like forever. He shot 7 under on the front from the back tees at 7100 yds. It was a little depressing hitting a 270 yd drive with my best driver swing from the next tees up and seeing his ball just past moon with a 3 iron. It was even more depressing when I hit an average 250ish drive and he was 30 yds past me. It was a very reliable shot for him. From his win in 8/2/2020:

I was marshaling in 90s at our course.... Jim Furyk shows up and hit this rising stinger 3wd on 6 from to center of fairway..... thing of beauty 😍
