What kind of career do you have that allows you to actually play golf?

Recommended Posts

Depends on where you are in your career and where you want to go. Too many factors to say, really.

Definitively NOT the golf industry.

From what I see it isn't so much what industry you work in.  Sure it can be tough during the winter months when days are short but there is plenty of time during the warmer part of the year.  I find the bigger factor is family commitments.  Kids sports those sort of things.... luckily I have a very accepting wife so still able to get out a few times a week but it is always a balance.

The field and working situation are the biggest factor, some jobs it seems can just get your hours in whenever so they'll play golf then work or work play then work more. Lately I've been traveling more for work and will get a few rounds in while I'm out there, better than just sitting in the hotel or working longer hours.

From what I have seen any sales job. Especially if you work for a company that really promotes entertaining their clients. My son is in sales for a company that does shutdowns and also provides the people/equipment for turnarounds.

For you guys unfamiliar with the shutdown/turnaround terminology. This is mainly done at Chemical Plants. Where they will totally shut down a unit for 1 - 2 months and do repairs/upgrades that are needed and can't be done while the unit is operating.

He has a $25,000 a month budget strictly for entertainment.

Business development/"recruiting" of potential new business deals (new clients/partners/staff); or Sales (closing deals)   They are related but slightly different IMO.  I've done this for 25 years for several companies.  Golf is a "5-6 hour meeting with a decision maker".  On average I play 2-3 times or more per week during the season, almost never on the weekends.  Lucky to have figured out how to combine all the things I love to do in family/business/golf.

Insurance, but I'm on the UW side so pretty much just a 9-5. Can play 9 on summer afternoons generally.

Would definitely have more leeway to play on the production/sales side. I had a summer off before starting a new job and would go play with my buddy on that side of things and we'd run into half his office out there on weekdays

4am to 7pm?  What job/career is that?
if that continues, you may have health problems in your future.  No doubt there are certain times many have to work extended hours, but not 365.

Exactly like this is just only working and nothing else until they dropped dead from a heart attacked to be replaced in 2 weeks max.

Also on the UW side in insurance.  Underrated industry honestly.

I could play 9 in the late afternoon a few times a week, probably could play 18 in the morning on occasion without much hassle.  Can take brokers out whenever, although I don't take advantage of that enough, just 4-5 times a summer.  Where I am located and in my discipline, it's fairly laid back and no one really works past 4pm.

As someone on the production side I can say with absolute certainty that we love when underwriters and carrier reps put a round of golf in the table!! 🤪🤪🤪

We had a retirement luncheon for several colleagues today and the Director had a line about in the old days working from home meant you were working on Sunday.  That being said, I am in banking and we are part time back to the office.  I can normally slip out early on a Friday and get 18 holes of twilight golf in.  Two weeks ago I went out at 4:30 and got 18 holes completed in 2:40.  As was mentioned up thread, it was always more family commitments that limited me.  Both kids are now grown and moved out so we have a lot more time to do things.

FYI, my company offers Fortune 1000 a variety of complex HR services.  NOBODY works from 4am to 7pm, not even during my younger years.  When I started the company I worked from 7am to 11pm, often weekends.  Nobody in the company worked like I did. Over all the years, most employees start around 7-9am, depending on tasks, and location, many cut out around 2-4pm, but others work to 5-6pm, and still others work scheduled to align with international time zones.  And most of our middle mgt and executives play golf.

I don't tell anyone how many hours they must work.  Their work schedules are basic or depend on desired performance and career aspirations.  To those of us living in a normal world, golf as an avocation and treated it as such.  I am still considering selling the company and goofing off.

Seems most of the guys at my club that play a lot of golf (3-4 days a week or more) are mostly self employed people.  Like insurance agents, financial reps, owner of trucking business, owner of insulation business, etc.  Also, seems many school teachers/administrators have plenty of time off as well (off summers/out of work by 4pm).
