Average Swing Speed Thread: What ball are you playing?

Jmccas

Recommended Posts

This thread is intended for those mere mortals that swing the driver less than 100MPH.

What ball are you playing?

What is your driver swing speed?

I swing around 95MPH. I was previously playing the Maxfli Tour X but will be testing the Tour BXS and Vice Pro. I tend to be a low spin/low trajectory so the high spin of the Tour B XS is appealing and the trajectory of the Vice Pro could work for me.

I’m 57 and my driver swing speed is about 90 mph.  I play Srixon Q Star tour and am experimenting with Cut Grey balls which are a great deal ($25) for a 3 piece urethane.

Both seem to be good matches for my SS and both have good green side spin.

I’m higher speed than requested, but the best players at my course in that range mainly use the prov1x, the extra height and spin helps.

I'm getting older(er). 90 - 95 average SS, though I usually only swing at 90% - sacrificing a bit of SS, for me anyway, increases the likelihood of center-face impact.

Ball is ProV1. Right down the middle of my comfort zone. Sufficient spin (without being too much) to get me the launch I want off the tee. And feels nice and soft around the green (you never choose a ball solely for drives).

As an aside? If you are looking to optimize spin to produce distance (and accuracy), the ball is only 1/3 of the equation. The driver itself (brand, loft & etc.) and its shaft (weight, firmness, kick-point & etc.) both also significantly affect outcomes. Just a thought.

Swing speed also around 95 with a good drive around 240-250 yards. Have tried all Titleist, TP5, Chrome Soft. Primary factor in choosing a ball is around the green and irons, Z Star is a good ball for me and feels like it compresses the best.

I plugged my launch monitor numbers into the Ping Ballnamic fitting and was pretty surprised it threw up the Chrome Soft X LS as my number one recommendation with the Chrome Soft X as my number two with my driver swing being anywhere from 93-96 MPH. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out with the ball fitting and will report back with some thoughts on each when I have a chance to get out and give both a shot.

My father plays the Vice Pro Plus even though he's right around 90 mph at 75 years old.  He says he loves the firmer feel even though it doesn't spin as much as he needs it to.  I have a cousin at around 95-100 mph and he plays the Vice Pro and B XS.  He likes the softer feel and needs the extra spin.

Swing speed is around 95. My good drives are 240-260. For MY game I've narrowed it down to AVX and the newest version of the Chrome Soft. My drives are a touch longer with the AVX but I'm a little longer with my irons using the Chrome Soft. Still trying to decide which I like for putting as that will be my deciding factor.

I don't have a preferred ball, I'm not very picky and I generally try to play more bump and run style chips and avoid short siding myself. That and I play munis with fairly receptive greens, when i actually hit them. I'll play anything from a top flite hammer control to a pro v1x and anything in between. I will say if the cut blues I have didn't have cover issues those would probably be my go to. I've been dabbling in the 3 piece surlyns market to see if I can find my unicorn of tough, just enough spin/shot shaping, cheap. As it is right now, I'll probably be a "let's use a sleeve of these today," guy. May not be the absolute best thing for my scoring, but I also play a lot of similar type balls.

Thinking about it, it's entirely possible that ball testing is an extension of my club ho-ing.

I’m between 95-100 depending on the day and my back, but I play the pro v1. Just suits my game and I grew up being told to pick a ball from the green back by my pro.

90-95. Currently Z Star, I love a sale.

Previously Maxfli Tour X, but they discontinued the green, so... No.

Money no object the V1x is the correct answer, if there is such a thing. But the cheapskate in me just can't do it. Sorry. Can afford to, but refuse to. V1x has the optimal high launch low spin combo off the driver, with great wedge spin.

SS 92-95 depending upon day and is generally different from tee to tee in the same round.  A good drive for me carries 235-245.  I have come to really like the Vice Pro.  I get great distance off the tee and good spin along with feel.  They barely edged out the Maxfli Tour only because of the 5+1 deal comes out to $25/doz.  $28 with tax and shipping.  I would use either ball interchangeably.  That being said I've been really liking the Kirkland V3!  A bit clickier (which I really don't mind) but get great driver distance, great greenside spin and they are $14/doz.  If they came out before the Vice 5+1 sale I bought 12 doz. they may be my gamer.  Hit a 75 yd. pitch shot into a green.  It bounced up around 3-4 feet and 3 feet forward of the pitch mark and stopped dead.  Guy up at the green when I hit it said it came back about 6 inches.  Dropped the 8 foot putt for birdie.  They perform.

52yrs old

96-98mph

250yds on the drive (when it goes straight)

I was playing the Snell Black

I have moved to the Wilson Triad and just recently to the TP5 because I can find them for $35 on eBay

The only difference I find between the 2 is that the TP5 flies higher than the Triad

But I am getting the same distance and both stop and spin on a dime

All good stuff. Based on the responses I’ve also ordered Cut Grey and Srixion Q Star Tour balls to the test.

The Tour B XS is fantastic around the practice greens but haven’t put one in play yet.

At some point I’d like to get them on a LM to compare.

Yea makes sense. Although I’ll still see stuff for example on Bridgestone balls that talks about swing speed. Do you know what characteristics make the prov1x and tp5x a fit for me with my swing speed?

I play the Bridgestone Tour BX. I’ve tried all the models of the Tour B line, and the BX which is the firmest gives me more distance, and height. Basically a firmer golf ball will have more ball speed at any club head speed. Plus a firmer ball will tend to launch higher as well, which can help create more carry yardage at lower speeds.
