2024 TP5 and TP5X balls…

hammergolf

Recommended Posts

So, the 7i is where my lower back started barking at me.  After warming up and hitting a bunch of balls off of a mat, I was feeling it in my back and elbow.  My warmup with the 7i saw my spin in a better window.  I must have shallowed my delivery a bit to protect my aging body haha.  But, all of these were hit with the same gimpy swing.  So, still apples to apples.

2021 TP5 7i:

Again, old faithful.  Performing as expected.  Good speed and soft feel.

2024 TP5 7i:

Again, extremely similar numbers. Ball speed, launch, peak, and decent all very very similar.  Spin was a little lower.  But, around 100rpm.  That is just a matter of me not being a robot.  Felt very similar too.  I want to say, maybe a just a hair softer.  But, I was indoors, a few swings in and more worried about my back lasting through the rest of the session to be able to get too granular with that.

2024 TP5X 7i:

This is where the separation between the TP5 and TP5X narrowed quite a bit.  Spin was extremely similar.  Launch with the TP5X was higher as was the peak height.  Not a great deal.  But for as similar as they had been, it was enough to take notice.

BX 7i:

The BX was more in line with the TP5X again.

7 iron thoughts:

So, this was interesting.  The TP5X had been lower spinning.  Not by a great deal.  But by enough to notice with the 5 iron.  With my mid iron, it was super super similar.  Still felt fast and crisp.  A hair faster.  But, again, I am inconsistent and the sample size between them wasn't big.  At this point in the session, I am highly highly favoring the TP5X. At this point my mind is thinking, if the spin window between the two models is that tight as the loft of the club increases, I would love to be able to get some extra ball speed off the tee.

9 iron was where I saw a little bit of separation come back between the two TP5's and the TP5X.  Again, not vast.  And I would expect my spin numbers to increase off of grass, and when I am pain free during a round haha.

2021 TP5 9i:

Like riding a bike.  Love the TP5.  I had the target set to 170 yards.  Felt so easy to just flip the ball to the green.  This grouping was nice because I didn't have to delete any poor shots.  My back was angry and I was running low on time.  So, it was nice to have this nice and easy group of shots.

2024 TP5 9i:

Ball speeds are going to show a little slower.  This was a me problem.  I was struggling and just praying to be done haha.  Otherwise, again, similar feel, similar spin.  Launch was a little lower and peak height was too as a result.

2024 TP5X 9i:

Love love love the feel of the TP5X.  Spin separation was back.  And, it launches every so slightly lower than the new TP5 as is the launch.  But, again, not a ton.

BX 9i:

At this point, someone shoot me.  My body was done.  It's almost not worth including this data set.  But, there was something I noticed with the 9i and my fatigued body with the BX.  It seemed to take more effort to get similar ball speeds with the BX as it did the 3 TP5 variants I was testing.  I thought my body was just giving up on me.  But, I threw the TP5X back in for a shot and speed jumped back up again.

But, looking at the shots, I can see that my contact was likely not great nor very consistent.  But, hey, I am in my 40's now.  I am going to wear down a lot faster these days.

9i thoughts:

So, this is where I feel like there was more separation with the old TP5 and the new. And with the TP5X also.  Launch crept down.  And, I kind of dig that.  If I can lower launch a bit, I could theoretically gain a little extra control on those shots.  The TP5X spin lowered back to being a few hundred RPM lower and showing the fact that they have different flight characteristics.

My spin is low on these shots.  But, I would expect that to go up on the course.  If I am looking at only losing 500-600RPM on these short iron shots, I think I can live with that.  With the speed I have, I hate seeing my spin get too low. Put me in a less than stellar lie where a few extra blades of grass gets between the ball and the face, or it's a little damp, then I am suddenly flying greens.

The TP5X showed me enough promise through this process that I really want to focus on it on the course.  Get a feel for the greenside performance.  I love how it feels with the irons.

By the time my session was done, I had nothing left in the tank to get any sort of meaningful driver data.  That is going to have to be a specific trip.  The GC Hawk is impressive.  The only issue is that it's an hour away.  Outside of the retail locations, there isn't a lot of access to legit LM's here.  I play a simulator league on a Uneekor EyeXO system that can be somewhat accurate.  So, I may be able to get a feel with the driver tonight when I play.

I will be using the TP5X tonight.

Lower peak height, less speed and more spin 24 Tp5.  People are going to like that.

Yeah, a little bit.  How much that will play into real world performance, I am not sure.  It was only a few shots with each.  Was using a pretty fresh MG4 wedge.  Those covers definitely got put through their paces with that one haha.

Ok.  So, I will try to dump this in here.  I went to a sim that uses GC Hawk.  I wanted to get a feel for each ball with long, mid, and short irons.  I wanted to compare them to some of my go to balls from the past year or two.  I wanted to get 5 quality strikes to compare numbers.  Disclaimer, I deleted shots that were poor contact as I wanted to compare the ball characteristics as best I can.  Also, as time went on and my elbow and back started to fatigue, my delivery seemed to change.  Must have started coming in more shallow.  During my warm up with my 7i, my spin was in the 6500-7000 range with the new TP5.  By the time I got to the 7i testing, my spin had decreased significantly, where with my 5i, it was more in line with what I would typically expect.  But, 7i and down, it's still apples to apples.  Should be able to see how the numbers differ between each ball.  Obviously, your mileage may vary.

I wanted to get 5 quality shots with 5i, 7i, 9i.  After going through the 5i, I decided that trying to compare 6 balls was going to take a lot longer than the time I had booked.  I ended up hitting balls for 2 hours.  My back hurts, my elbow hurts, I am not as young and spry as I was thought I was haha.  I was going to get some driver numbers between them also.  But, by the time I got the shots with the SW that I posted above, my back was toast.  Driver was not going to happen.

On the ball flight view of these results, the average is gray.  The last shot is the darker colored set of numbers.  Couldn't figure out how to change that.

So, I maybe did this backwards, but wanted to make sure I was hitting the harder club while I was still fresh.  So, the order will be 5i w/21 TP5, 24 TP5, 24 TP5X, BX.  Then with 7i, then with 9i.  Will start with the grouping, then follow it up with the individual shots used.

21 TP5 5i:

This is one of my favorite balls.  It's soft feeling.  Gives me great spin with my irons.  And plays well around the green for me.  There are probably faster/longer options.  But, I feel like this has been the best of both worlds for me.

image.jpeg.3d973d055cdb264cb32efaacae83f7a9.jpeg

image.jpeg.94a451141ce98947fe5b5729c1d465ab.jpeg

24 TP5 5i:

This definitely reminds me of the last TP5 in terms of feel.  Performance was really really similar.  Indoors off of a mat, I would be hard pressed to point out any significant differences between the two.  But, the last one was pretty damn good.  So, unless they completely reinvent it, I don't expect a drastic change.

image.jpeg.5691db8064037053c1e0b44d5fb879b4.jpeg

24 TP5X 5i:

The 24 TP5X is definitely a crisper feeling ball.  Not hard.  Just more crisp.  Almost like the cover is soft and responsive, but the layer underneath it is firm.  Feels fast and solid.  I am a big fan of it.  A little lower spinning than the TP5's.  A little faster too.  It's not as much separation as I was expecting.  And honestly, that's a good thing.  The fact that it is so close for spin means that I wouldn't be giving up a lot if I wanted to go with this.

image.jpeg.e70f40a697a9efd0cdf379447a1ee8d4.jpeg

BX 5i:

I do like this ball.  And I am including it just so I have a different OEM option.  I have cycled between this and the TP5 a bit.  The BX when I want something a little faster off the tee.  In the controlled environment of the indoor simulator yesterday, the BX felt pretty similar to the TP5X.  Maybe a touch softer.  It does seem to spin more in line with the TP5.

image.jpeg.fb11c66a9233fdcbd55207df029cd450.jpeg

Thoughts on 5i shots:

So, a lot of the launch/flight numbers are extremely similar between these 4 balls.  The launch, peak height, and decent angle are pretty much right in line with one another.  Not a surprise that the TP5X is faster and a little longer than the 21 TP5 and the 24 TP5.  I was surprised to see it keep up and surpass the BX.  The BX is probably the longest ball I play semi regularly.  So, that's really promising.  I think I preferred the feel of the TP5X over the BX by a small margin.  It would all come down to spin.  And, I think I would need to see that outdoors.  Not on a LM.  But on the course, side my side.

Will create new posts for the other clubs.

@radiman have you tested the 2024 BX yet?  I was underwhelmed a little.  My tested with the new balls is consistent with your results. New TP5X is fast, but retains some good iron spin and green side as well.  Love it.

Yes, in my testing it is lower spinning off the mid to long irons and driver.

I also got some of the 2024 TP5 and TP5x and finally had a chance to do some testing on Trackman at my club's hitting bays. Very quick, unscientific format: 4 iron, 7 iron, PW; three shots per club for each ball.

Initial thoughts

The balls performed similar with the 4 iron and 7 iron. Slight increase in ball speed; slight reduction in spin with the 2024 TP5x. Perhaps this was within the margin of error for my test, but it was a very consistent result.

The pitching wedge was another story. The 2024 TP5x few noticeably lower and spun quite a bit less than the 2021 TP5x. I'm quite curious to see if this holds outdoors once I'm hitting off of grass, as this is promising for me. I am a high ball hitter and control distance with steep landing angles, so I actually prefer less spin than most (e.g., I struggle in the wind if I'm spinning 7 iron at 7000rpm. Prefer 6000-6400).

Have also rolled some putts with both balls. The 2024 TP5x feels slightly firmer off the face than the 2021, but it doesn't feel much different. If you liked the feel of the 2021 putting, you'll like the 2024.

Overall, I loved the feel of the 2024 off the irons. Felt a little more crisp, whereas the 2021 had a deader feel by comparison. I'll need to see if this holds outdoors, as it could be a side effect of the acoustics in our hitting bays. More testing to come once spring arrives. I haven't had a chance to get any numbers around the green because I'm indoors on mats, but the ball feels close enough to the 2021 on shorter shots that I expect the performance to still be good there.

I didn't get any numbers for anything other that PW, but I was surprised at how much less spin there was on my PW with the 2024 TP5x. Was honestly trying to figure out if something was up, but the result was consistent for me. Not sure if it would hold for 50, 54, etc.

You have a shallow AoA with irons in general which could explain the lack of spin especially for PW.  I haven't tested the '24 TP5x yet but my tour pro client that's on TM staff that I trained earlier today said his spin numbers were lower with irons with the new ball compared to '21 version.

100%. I'm very shallow across the board, even with wedges. But if you look at ball 3 from the 2021 with PW, that shot had an AoA that was comparable to the balls from the 2024 set, yet the 2021 spun a lot more than the 2024 for me.

As I said in the post, this was not very scientific. But I think there are some trends that will likely hold for me as I go into the season. I'm looking forward to testing this ball on the course.

Was able to test the 2024 TP5x vs the 2021 TP5x in the simulator recently and came away impressed. I was about 1.5-2 mph faster with the new ball on Driver swings consistently and had good feel to it. I was worried on feel initially because I think with the putter the 2024 ball is ever so slightly firmer than the 2021 ball, but felt none of that on full swing shots. Comparing 6 irons I was also a touch faster while with full swing wedges I was getting similar spin numbers.

Since I can only test inside right now, but hearing others say how impressed they are with the short game spin and feel I think this ball will be a big winner. I was someone who liked the 2021 ball a lot but seeing it be faster through almost all of the bag while not sacrificing spin, I can't wait to test on the course this spring.

I was able to get my Trackman numbers now to post. Hit a few more with the new ball as it was getting toward the end of the session. Most shots was seeing that 1.5-2mph faster. Comfortable enough to put my ball order in for the year early and move forward with 2024 TP5x.

golfspy released some numbers on the '24 TP5x and stated its compression at 93 which is on par with CSx srixon XV and others.

From when I tested the proto last month, I would say it's just about in that level of firmness. A firm ball but not that ultra firm like left dash.

I don't know about this speed wrap jargon making it feel softer. It is still pretty clicky and firm on wedges and clicks on the putter. I know a firm ball is going to be firm I am not looking for it to feel like a marshmallow nor would want that.

I had gotten a dozen of the Year of the Dragon TP5 at the end of last season, I played my best rounds last year with that ball and the 2021 TP5X pix, I did find the TP5 balooned a bit on me off the driver but the spin was remarkable on approach shots. I just got a dozen of the new TP5X Year of the Dragon so I hope these are the ones for me. I prefer a slightly lower trajectory than the TP5 and I think the TP5X fits into my spin window a lot better through the bag. Will test with a sim this weekend.

Am i the only one thinking these monitor numbers are from a range session with McIlroy? lol........230 carry on a 7 iron? GAWD DARN!!!

Finally someone said it!  Those are my 7 wood #s 😅

Also, I'm pretty sure new TP5X is firmly in the bag for 2024.  Does all the stuff well. ✔️  Durability is good ✔️

He hit the 3 iron into a green on a par 5 from 281 out today.  Yes there was wind at this back and yes it probably carried “only 250-260”.

Rory stated on Twitter he is seeing a gain of 7 yards with the tp5x

of course he is.....being under contract and being a product influencer for TM leads to this type of commercial.

bottom line is, he will hit his drives 340, his wedges 165 and still miss 5 foot putts all day long.....

In all fairness, putting has always been the sketchiest part of his game.  He's never going to claim that he makes more short putts with the new TP5x, lol.
