Causes for concern

As late as mid-December I was debating whether to sell the PXG driver and stick with my old Taylormade M6. A late December shaft change in the PXG sealed the deal, and it'll be in the bag. I also nearly fell in love with a putter last weekend (Seemore Si2 double-bend). My putter is safe for now, but the thought of what could've been will be lingering any time I miss a 3 footer this year. 

Prediction 

C+/B-, somewhere around May. 

 

Grading scale

(F) not making it out of January

(D) this year is a leap year, so making it to Feb 29th is kinda like winning this challenge for the next 4 years... Golf math

(C) making it past Master's weekend

(B) succumbing to the lure of Father's Day and birthday gift cards in June

(A) if I make it past July, my stubbornness will take over and I'll complete the challenge

New golf bags are on the table for everyone in the BISC, and I wouldn't expect anything different from this motley crew.

I do have a 15th club that I leave in the office at work, and only use it to beat balls. I never take it out on a course, and I use it specifically so I don't mess up the faces of my gamers by hitting hundreds, maybe thousands of shots with low quality range balls. I work at a facility that... I guess I could say a handicap could not be applied there, as there are no proper golf holes or even grass. lmk if I'm breaking the rules.

The most recent additions to the bag are the Artisan wedges and putters that I got in 2023.

 

Why would I fail? I'm not sure, but the Callaway VIP account does not help my chances of victory. I've said as recently as last week that I'd decline an equipment contract if offered one, even if the gear was free.99. I suppose if I get one of those Recoil Customs shafts that I've been trying to find for years I'd fail. Maybe I could make a case in saying that it's actually the same shaft, just a different finish?

 

Why haven't I entered this challenge before? Because I was actively hunting and intending to buy and game new gear every time I heard about it before. It was a sick cycle, setting myself up for doom.

Lusting after another participant's gear is normally a surefire way to crash & burn in this challenge!  But, it is iron shafts, which are somewhat bothersome and cost-prohibitive to change out, so you may actually survive this.

Haha, I’m not even pretending I’ll survive 14 clubs for a whole year (or even a few weeks). I already bought an AI Rossi on a whim even though I prefer the Squareback/Double Wide type of putter (and have both of those lol). I also swap out my 5i and 5H depending on wind/weather and am contemplating getting a 3H to do the same with my 5W for windy days. 

 

I am what I am (and I’m not nearly good enough to swap out this much but I have too much fun doing it)

Way early in the season for me, but also a challenge I need to try. I haven't had a set bag for at least 5 years, swapping clubs mid season  etc... for  no reason.

Here's the gamers that I have in the PING i210, 4-U

 

Here's a backup set. I bought a set of Mizuno JPX 919's off of 2nd Swing just so I could extract the shafts and have backups. I turned around and sold the heads here on BST. Different color label, Yellow instead of the gamer whites.

 

The white labels are hard stepped, so there's a 5-9 shaft, plus 3 PW shafts.
The yellow labels are just a standard 4-P set

The shafts in my Artisans are just regular old ion plated ones. If I get my hands on another Matte Black PW shaft, I'm going to take it and the yellow label PW shaft and stuff them in my Artisans.

 

Also I may or may not be on the fast track to failing the challenge, I hit the 3w I built for beating balls and I couldn't miss. After work tomorrow I'm going to hit a few with the driver, woods, and 4i to try and see what works best. Pray for me.

Causes for concern

I have never completed this challenge and usually go down in Q2 each year but had an early exit last year due to buying the putter. I normally change putters part way through the season as our greens speed up, so will need to resist temptation.

Prediction 

Unless I can avoid the putter change mid season because the greens are slower this year, then I expect to fall short sometime in Q2. However I’m also going back to St Andrews in March so may fail Q1 if the putter rotation occurs….

Been thinking about tracking down a Seemore Mini Giant FGP for a slightly larger putter head as the FGP that I've been using for years, I wish was a little heavier so I could have on a grip that weighs a little more. I found the lightest grip I could just so I don't lose where the head is in my swing. But I'm someone that waits for the right deal so we'll see if I end up finding one at a price I like on eBay.

That does bring up a bit of an ethical questions though: It is "ok" to sell another BISC'er a club if you aren't doing it out of the kindness of your heart, but instead just so that he/she fails out of the BISC in a very public and embarrassing way?

The FGP is my favorite putter of all time. I've tried numerous other ones but always come back to the FGP. The only gripe I have with it is head weight and I don't like putting lead tape on it. The Mini Giant seems perfect since it's a very similar footprint without being huge and adds that extra head weight I'm looking for.

As of this afternoon, I have officially failed the BISC. That club that I built out to use exclusively to beat balls with? Yeah, it beat out my 17° Apex UW for a spot in the bag. Did some testing today before work with the top end of my bag and the numbers were plain to see. I literally lasted 40 hours into this challenge, I need help.

Measuring in hours really makes it sound better. I'm definitely going to state my BISC time in hours this year instead of months or days.

Not up to me but i'd support this not being a violation

 

I don't think hitting clubs at a demo-day either, something like that...should count. 

 

Or if you go on a trip and have to play with a rental set. That's like, it's not cheating if it's in a different area code---i think it falls under that same umbrella

I agree myself but I didn’t make the rules. I’ve changed my bag 2x before the first of the year and don’t have any plans to play anytime soon. So technically according to the rules I can change it again before I play 😬.  My bag is set 100% with exception of my irons…I have 3 sets I can play all day with zero issues…but those 245 Mizunos are screaming at me everytime I see them. It’s just a matter of time before I get them.
