Anyone have a wedge setup like pw/48/52/56/60?

As some have said regarding playing hollow-body irons or more distance oriented irons, I considered doing something similar to this when I had T200 irons. I had a 43* PW, and my next club down was a 50* GW, then 54* SW. I hit that PW about 125, the GW about 105, and SW 95, so I considered getting a specialty PW to hit a 115 shot. As I played more and got more comfortable hitting a 115 knockdown shot with my PW, I didn't see the need anymore and played fine with those until upgrading to my current set.

That's the path I'm going down. Got fit into the T100S a few summers ago, first time I had a 44* PW. Tweaked my bag multiple times, but in the end figured out that I didn't need the 5 iron (too close to my 5 hybrid), didn't like the set 48*, and made the most sense to have 4 specialty wedges at the bottom of the bag. Don't have the 4* gaps right now because of the way the bag evolved, but that's the plan for the next set. That said, I'm going to the TPI in Oceanside in February for a wedge fitting, and I'll see what the experts think!

Prefer 46, 50, 56, 60 with low bounce on the 60. Not a big Vokey fan for lower lofted wedges. Awesome for 56-60.

Exactly what I carry. I am an advocate for carrying whatever you want to help you score. I am constantly looking for improvements and I encourage the OP to try his idea out. My 60 is almost exclusively for really short sided shots or high flops. When I need it I need it. Everything else is handled by the other 3 wedges. Add one if you think you need it. Cant hurt.

I’m toying with the idea of 4 degree gaps from 20 - 60 and carry a driver, 4 wood, and 20 degree driving iron. I can do this with skipping a 4 iron in the titleist 150’s. I currently play 46, 50, 55, 60 and find myself in some goofy spots from time to time. I need more ‘full’ swing options at the bottom of my bag.

My home course has 12 par 4s and the longest par 3 is 190 so I don’t need a ton of options at the top. Really just need 3 tee clubs and then a bunch of options in the scoring clubs.

My setup is 44, 48, 52, 56, 60. I dropped a club at the top of my bag but it's worth it for the scoring clubs. At 46 for your PW, 50-54-58 is a much cleaner setup. But with 60 being a requirement, you could go 46-51-56-60. In choosing the 51, you could look at Vokey's 50 and go with either 9 or 13 degrees of bounce or go 52 with either 7 or 11 degrees of bounce. You could even bend the 60 to 61 and keep your 5 degree increments. Will give you a little more height for the shots you need the club for.

I play a wedge-fest course and would like some better gapping. Apart from the par 5s, I almost never have a yardage more than 140y into a green. The course I play has a lot of elevated greens with mounds so I need a 60* over a 58 (which would have made gapping a little easier).

I hit my set PW like a 10 iron, but my wedges I max out at around a 3/4 swing. All yardages +/- 5y.

Current setup

PW at 46* 135y

Vokey 50 - 120y

Vokey 56 - 95-105y

Vokey 60 - 80y and under

Thinking of

PW @ 46* - 135y

Vokey 48 - 125y

Vokey 52 - 115y

Vokey 56 - 95-105

Vokey 60 - 80y and under

I realize this is a ton of wedges, and I would need to drop another long iron (thinking of going 2-4-6 driving irons, then 7-pw in a set makeup).

Am I completely out to lunch? Anyone else go all in with the wedge setup?

It's difficult to imagine any reason someone would set their wedges up in a different way than the 4 degree gaps you mention (48-60)

The exception is obviously someone playing from 7300+ yards all of the time where you actually need all of the longer clubs.

PW then becomes 44 and you just have to make yourself ok with your PW being a 9 iron.

4 degree lofts work perfectly all the way through the set unless you think you absolutely have to have three woods and a 4 iron

Yes, back in the day when between clubs, 8 was too much, 9 not enough, I’d knock down the 8.  Fairly reliable.

Seems that there’s an obsession with exact lofts and the resulting exact distances.

The ball doesn’t know what number is on the club.

I did go a bit nuts with wedges a few years back. which looked like, 3 iron then 5-9 iron in a set and then had a 46, 50 54, 56, 60 set up. Some of my friends still think it's hilarious. The thought process was to have a 54 to chip with, the 56 being a proper sand wedge and then a low bounce lob wedge. I'm back in a more standard 47, 52, 56, 60 set up. Getting the shaft right with the wedges is just as important as the loft/grind IMO.

It's easy to overthink that section of the bag.

OP, I am running the same setup you are.  PW@44, then wedges at 48, 52, 56 and 60.

The 56 and 60 are both specialty clubs: 56 out of the bunker, 60 on short-sided shots from tight lies.

I could probably take out the 60 and just open up the 56 if needed.

I do, sort of.  My wedge setup is as follows: 58°, 55°, 52°, 48°.  These are the clubs that are used, in varying amounts, for chip, pitch, partial, full, & bunker shots.

This thread is relevant to my interests

Currently carry a 2 iron for off the tee on some holes, with wedges at 45 (Set PW), 52, and 58.

However, I am finding a bit too much of a gap between the PW and 52 and if I upgrade my irons in the next year or so, it will likely be to something with a PW at 44 or even 43.

I am leaning on going set PW, 48, 53 (52 or 54 bent) and 58 and taking the 2 iron out of the bag.

I go 45-50-56. And then alternate my 3 iron with a 64° for some courses.

I used to but I find it more fun to try different shots with less, depending on the surrounding terrain at 49, 54, and 60. I am learning alot more about my short game now.

Carrying 5 wedges is overkill in my opinion especially to cover to only 14 degrees of loft because in almost all cases you will be leaving yourself too few clubs at the top end of the bag creating massive distance gaps and dropping the 5 iron is not a good move because it would limit your options on longer par 3s, the only 2 scenarios in which it may work are (1) if you only play super short courses with very few longer par 4s or par 5s and are hitting wedges into most holes or (2) if you are a bomber like Cam Champ who can carry his driver 350 and his 4 iron 270+ thus reducing the need for any longer clubs after driver and 3 wood.

46 / 50 / 54 and 58 or 46 / 50 / 56 and 60 are both much better options and these will cover all distances needed.

My situation is being a slow swinger and being able to hit driver, 3HL off the deck, and the 22* 4 iron off the deck.  I don't have enough distance to create massive distance gaps.

This year I learned how to grind through the wide variety of lies found on a wet hilly golf course.

Do you play elsewhere? Can you play your course farther back?

Personally I'd be concerned about going too far in the direction of tailoring to your home course because at some point your game will be less well-rounded for anywhere else. I totally get that you want to play your best golf where you play your most golf, and coming from a privileged upbringing at a country club I can see what you're saying. But, as an adult with no club affiliation playing a variety of courses and conditions, I want my game to be suited for as much variety as possible. I tailor my lob wedge to the super firm waste areas abundant to my area by choosing low bounce and heel relief so I can scalp it off hard packed sand, etc., but I'm comfortable enough with that club to play it off soft turf and my sand wedge is high bounce and the go-to for fluffy sand. I also play in a lot of wind and I proudly carried a driving iron for a long time, but part of that was because I couldn't find a hybrid I liked. That's no longer the case and the hybrid that works for me is better and more versatile. I can see having 15 clubs and switching one out for those types of scenarios, but beyond that I want my set to travel.

Best of luck. The 3-swing wedge matrix is something I'd recommend with your existing setup to see if the results cover all your scenarios. It's been great for me, and adding a wedge would only make it harder to decide, not easier. But to each their own.

I think everyone would agree your suggestion of 46-50 and a SW & LW makes sense.  Let’s not get into a traditional or 2010ish loft debate but 46* PW are a thing of the past. We’re lucky if the set PW is 43-44* now. Thus the wedge gapping issues some are having.

If someone said they’d give you 10 clubs 24-60* you’d likely have 4* gaps. So to say the title of this thread and and 5 whatever you want to call them is overkill seems a bit much. With 41-42* PWs coming now, 5 “whatever you want them called” is coming.

I recently got a set of T100S and have been considering this exact option. For now the short end of the bag consists of only PW(44*), 50* and 56*. It's manageable but the gaps are a bit bigger than I'd like. I prefer to hit full shots rather than partial ones when that's an option.

The other option would be to go 44*, 50*, 54*, 58* but that 44*-50* gap feels a tad too big for my liking currently so not really convinced on it.

Just haven't gotten around to splashing the cash yet. And I also need to get fit for a driver. What I really need is a sponsor.

I think it would drive me crazy to have that many options on the low end of the bag. I would prefer to have 2 wedges (I also do not count my PW as a wedge, it is an additional iron in my set) and just practice different distances with all of them.

When I was playing my best golf, if I could not reach the green, I played to 100-125 from wherever I was, be it on the tee box or in the fairway/rough on a longer hole. Then I spent the majority of my time practicing from 75-150 to account for flyers and chunks, lol. At one point I was a 2 handicap with only a 52 and a 56, and do not see any way that would have been lower by adding wedges and removing clubs from the top of the bag. The more on the top of the bag gives me more options to hit that 100-125 range from the tee.

It is an interesting take on the setup, but not one I would ever consider.

  • 2 weeks later...

Playing a 48 bent to 46(replaced my PW from the iron set with a regular wedge and had it bent down to match the loft for gapping). 6-degree jump to 52,56,60. Works for me and not too much of a huge gap between distances. It was either buy 1 wedge and match it to my current irons and have a difference of 6 degrees between 9(40) and 52 degrees, keep it at 48 and have a gap of 8 degrees between my 9(40), or keep the 6 degree between my 9 and iron PW(46) and then buy a new 50, 54, 58. Playing the 48(46), 52,56,60 works great
