Does anyone still game Ping Eye 2's?

Are Eye2s legal to use for a USGA handicap and events?

Yes to handicap.

As for events... if you're talking USGA events, no. Other events would be a yes, unless the groove rule is in play as a condition of competition. The USGA recommends this only be done at the highest level of amateur competition, so generally speaking, you're OK to use them.

The V groove Eye 2 iron are legal in all competitions. You may not use square Eye 2 irons manufactured before March 1990 in the men's and women's US Opens and professional tours. You can use them in amateur championships they are grandfathered under the 2010 rules.

I just had a set of the real square groove (1985 Others Pending) Eye 2 irons retumbled and reshafted to be sure.

Did any of you taller/bigger golfers ever extend these? And I mean reshaft, not put extensions in?

The more I am learning about fitting, I've found that I need irons 2 inches longer than usual. I've called ping about figuring out a "equation" for making eye 2s 2 inches longer. All they do is want to sell me new clubs lol. They literally insult me over the phone saying you're probably 1/2 long with your wrist to floor. But they don't get it have a very wide frame and when I put my hands on the club, my "triangle" raises a lot. I've already had one lower back surgery, but hey, what do I know? I can't even call ping and deal with these guys on the phone. I tell them, I would like to speak to a professional fitter, not a salesman. He says, yes sir, I can help you, I'm both. Lol these guys on the phone are a joke.

Actually, the Ping customer service people are excellent by and large. There are always some exceptions of course but Ping does train their customer contact folks to be technically knowledgeable.

I've never heard of anyone playing 2" overlength. Even guys that are super tall don't play clubs that long. Sounds like you need to find a professional fitter or at least post some photos and video's of yourself swinging a more conventional length club so you can get some feedback.

I have seen a few sets that players I know have used that were 2" over length. Funnily enough they were all Henry Griffiths fitted sets. They had IMO a weird philosophy on this. They commonly fit players into that sort of length. Can't see the sense in it myself.

Wow. I came across (and brought straight away!) a set of Eye 2+ 3-PW & SW that are still in box, un-hit since new :)

Email to Ping with serial number confirms they were sold in 1991 (as it states on the shaft band I think - 9/91?). Black dot.

Opened them up to check them. All in great nick, all appear un-used. Only fault is the grip on the SW seems to have been open to the elements somehow and has some sort of brown corrosion stains on it. Other grips all seem like new not cracked or shiny at all. A couple of irons have very light marks in the cavity and that's about it.

Not sure I can ever bring myself to play them though. Bit of a quandry... Might have to get myself a golf rack and mount them to stare at :smilie_ping:

What would you do?

Putter Rehab. They have a Facebook page. Guys here in Dallas. Doing mine for $100 plus shipping. Seemed like a pretty good deal from others i priced. I just sent them the heads though. Not sure if that makes a difference in price.

Thanks, I'll look them up. I can easily pull the heads to ship. It looks like they did a pretty good job.

::wipes tears from chin::

proud owner of a set of BeCu black dot Eye2's that were stolen from my trunk a few years back. Man I miss those clubs.

Funny part is I took out the 3 iron that morning to replace with a 5W. That is all I have left to remember them by.

If anyone wants a black dot BeCu 3 iron for a good price, shoot me a PM.

I've had a 2I for so many years that I always work back into my bag no matter what irons I had in the bag. I've tried so many different hybrids but l after playing several rounds with it and hitting it so well I picked up a set 2-SW with KT-M shafts just like the 2I. Weighted them to D2, painted the bottom groove and new grips. Since I already had a 2I, I dropped an XCaliber Tour X 105 in the new 2I. Haven't had a chance to hit them but it's a cheap experiment.

Of course the DC area just got hit with a cold spell so it may be a little bit before I actually get to hit them.

I love that tumbled finish. It reminds me of what mine looked like when I first got them many years back. I wish Ping still used that finish. I'd still play them.

I made the leap again... Found a left handed set of orange dot eye 2s on eBay for $50 US and couldn't help myself... 3-PW.

The only thing weird is the wedge... the serial number is the same... but it's applied differently. Also the TM and R marks are different. It's perhaps a replacement wedge for the set or a fake... not sure.

Given the loft differences... I'll likely only play the 5-9 anyways...

I've owned and sold six sets of eye 2s and +s through the years. I love beryllium... just have to get lucky and find another set.

I've been professionally fitted. He said it's the equivalent to a normal sized person, choking down 2 inches hitting a bucket of balls as full swings. He said people get the "oh ouch" as a reaction when he tells them that.

How tall are you and what is your wrist height? According to Ping's color code chart you would have to be 6' 9" or taller to fit into + 2" (I'm extrapolating based on the chart).

Regarding reshafting and making the clubs 2" longer than before, the swingweight will jump up from C9 to E2 (or in that range). That's a pretty hefty club. Someone of your size should be able to handle it. I'd look for some lightweight shafts of some sort though.
