I know everyone is having fun blasting SC for copying, but I bet Charley came to him and asked, “Can you make me a putter that looks exactly like a Zebra”?

Didnt Nick Price use that thing? I remember it was very soft feeling, still not a good looking putter IMO.

Just tried to find a pic online and stumbled across this little factoid... "[background=rgb(236, 232, 222)]The designs and names created by the company also include the legendary Ray Cook mallet putter design, as well as the Blue Goose and the renowned Ray Cook Chipper, [/background][background=rgb(236, 232, 222)]both invented by Titleist craftsman Scotty Cameron, who began his golf career with Ray Cook."[/background]

The good news is, maybe Scotty didn't steal this design after all.... the bad news is... he is potentially responsible for it in the first place.

He should go Nick Price style and sole it in front of the ball for alignment purposes and totally not to flatten any imperfections in the first couple inches of his line.

I totally remember him doing that as part of his routine, never even considered the fact that he could be tamping down the turf at the same time....

    No, he's not.

I don't know if the Zebra was the very first face balanced mallet putter or not, but it inspired a ton of imitations even if they used an alignment aid other than a bunch of stripes. It also had at least a 25 year run in the marketplace.

I paid $1 for one in a thrift store several years ago and it never left the bag. Probably the easiest to use golf club I have ever owned. Just take those lines and drive them straight through the ball.

I putted lights out with a Zebra back in the day. That is until a friend of mine walked up to me on the putting green and asks innocently, "How do you putt with a putter that has that much metal touching the ground"? That was it. I lost all touch with that putter and had to move to a blade.

The one I have (one of the originals, but they did make a deep face version) is pretty shallow. I don't ground it at address, so there's no metal touching the ground.

Nick did use a Zebra for a while. Also used a Cook face-balanced mallet for a while before gaming the Fat Lady; Nick liked mallets.

I believe Scotty Cameron has made a similar putter before but never for retail. Not the Red X. Tour Only SSS Coupe Mallet Prototype Circle T. Here are some links to it.

I had 2 Zebra putters back in the early 90's.

The grey one first, and then a white one. I putted extremely well with both.

Too bad the white got pilfered from my bag.
