Tackiest thing in golf

Recommended Posts

I am guilty of using snus, but I keep an empty tin in my pocket to dispose of them or wait until I drive by one of the plentiful trash cans throughout the course. And if you see cows on the golf course jeans are absolutely fine! Here we wear jeans throughout the fall/spring seasons and nobody has an issue with it, once the snow thaws everyone tends to ditch the denim.

My biggest tacky annoyance is when somebody sees a 10:00 tee time and rolls in about 9:52, leaving 3/4 of the group waiting on them to throw their shoes on and try to "warm up" before we hold up the group behind us. Luckily our main late arrival guy has been doing much better once we brought it up to him.

Hate trash. Sunflowers seeds should be eaten hull and all or not at all. Guys who talk trash, but can't abide it coming back. Whining, ie, excuses for everything. Hot tempers who can't keep it under control. Gamesmanship, we had a guy who thought he was Titanic Thompson, was constantly doing some stupid BS thing. Cell phones for anything but an emergency. Range finders for a 50 yd shot on a course you've played 1000 times. Back in the day there were a lot of tobacco chewers on the course. Disgusting by-products. Same with cigar butts, sorry OP. Some of you have been to tough on jeans (thank you, Hawkeye). Get out into rural areas, they are the uniform of the day. Starch'em for church, funerals, weddings. paired with a good pair of boots, you're gold.

While this is certainly not me, I used to play regularly with a friend who did just this because he really was that long. He would sometimes get abuse from the group behind us. Occasionally, some of us (his partners) would invite the impatient ones to stick around to watch him hit (he'd never do this himself.) Invariably, they'd apologize and go back to their group.

What's one to do?

I hate nothing. If I'm golfing...life is good. Our greens see a lot of play so I usually try to fix a couple ball marks for every 1 I leave, maybe more. I don't count or care. If something bothers me and I can fix it, I'll do it rather than complain to the pro shop.

My only complaint is missing that 4' birdie putt.

One of those things you wear on your belt or hang on your bag to count your strokes. :)

I really don't care how you dress, what clubs you play or what your score is. Just exhibit good etiquette, repair ball marks and rake bunkers. Have fun damn it!!

There was a course in the Bay Area of California where I used to play, they had some cattle on the grounds, maybe half dozen cows and at least one large steer, or at least what I think a steer is, it was large with horns. Any hoo, I always wondered how dangerous it was driving right past them on the cart path, with no fences or pens. They always seemed pretty mellow, but what if that steer decides to charge a cart that's driving by.

Tackiest or pet peeve?

Tackiest is some scary looking married dude trying to score with the cart girl who is young enough to be his daughter.

Lots of courses have sheep, cows or ponies on them over here in the UK. I’ve also played a course with hundreds of deer on it. Some have fences around the greens, with appropriate local rules. Many do not fence the greens as these animals have no interest in being on them as there is not much grass to graze. The only problems are really that they can get in the way and what they leave behind. Tends to be an interesting novelty for the first few holes which wears off really quite quickly.

I got a foursome together at work once, and one of the guys showed up wearing Dockers with a plain white T-shirt. It was basically a Hanes or Fruit of the Loom undershirt.

At least he had a belt, tucked it in and was reasonably slim (no beer belly or anything).

He claimed to not know about the dress code and the course let him slide this one time.

To top it off he was one of the guys that has a towel hanging out of his back pocket the whole time.

Great guy but, poor golfer and not a whole lot of situational awareness.

The seeds never bothered me really. Ya it’s not cool but, if you think it’s because the ball with hit one on the way to the hole from a putt then you putt wrong. Make sure your path is clean.

Music is a case by case basis. Like anyone, I’m a fan of silence and the outdoors and calm. But I also like music. During a scramble? Yes. Lots of music. Playing a new private club? Nah. Prob no music. Tournament? No music. But if I’m out playing for fun with the guys and we want tunes? Sure. If it bothers you, say something. I’ll turn it down around greens and tees.
