Really? lol.

Are you mad that they decided not to play the olympics to a point where yo wish them bad luck or something? I saw Rory's "incident" and it was not much really. 2 seconds of intense frustration where he threw his club to the ground and that was it. No swearing, no kicking, no scene really. The club just happen to hit the wrong spot I guess, but nothing we don't see once in a while in tournaments. Not sure what's to write about. Besides, showing short burst of passion like that may actually grow the sport with younger kids. Why don't you ask younger players who they prefer to watch, Vijay or Rory.

I don't know if this is just a difference between the UK and the States, or just our club is unique. If you throw a club and get seen, you get a one month competition ban, do it again and its 3 months, again after that and you are asked to leave. Oddly no one really does it again after having a one month ban. I hate playing with club throwers, it totally ruins my enjoyment of the round. I play golf to relax, not to be waiting for some hothead to twirl his club into a tree.

On this one the pros should be setting an example, it is in no way acceptable to demonstrate a behaviour in a global tournament that leads any golfer sat at home, young or old, thinking that its fine because Rory/Sergio/Rose/Stenson did it.

So safe to assume Rory has been asked to never return to Holywood GC then? This is at least the 3rd time he has been seen throwing a club.

Simply giving you the policy of the club I am a member at. I also hate seeing pros do it as I get thoughts such as 'was that a Scotty he just threw in that lake?'

so what of he broke his club, you want to see passion from elite sportsmen, you see it in rugby, football, basketball. I don't want to see him shrug his shoulders and take his money, I want these guys to have fight.

I like passion, but I'd rather see him punch himself in the face, or whip his caddy.

I've thrown a club, very infrequently, but sometimes it just needs to be done. I've never thrown one with a stranger present in our group though. Sometimes, my regular partners need to know that the club is dead to me.

There is a Vokey 60K in the woods at some crappy muni near my house. It needed to go in the pond, but the woods were safer.

Tiger was a world class cusser, and he brought more people to the game then ever before in this generation.

The other before him was a model citizen, Arnie. Times change, but awe inspiring talent and an impressive record are what draw people to the game.

That's really not quite a true statement. Tiger brought people to the TV but he did very little to actually bring people to "play" the game. The ones that benefited from Tiger the most were the other players as purses skyrocketed.

He had really poor form. About the only thing he did right was throw it forward. Casted from the top with over rotation leading to a toe down impact. Needs more practice.

Seriously though, we are seeing the frustration of a former #1 who is getting passed by and he knows it. Hope he's saved all that money.

Hey "Rors",

Nice week for you and for us. After your ridiculously dumb comments about golf in the Olympics, and today's on-course childish tantrums at the Open Championship, we are considering dumping our sponsorship of you.

We need smarter players and better behavior from the athletes we pay to promote our brand. And...yes-wake up-you ARE responsible to help grow the game of golf. Get over yourself.

Good Christ not everything is or has to be "for the good of the game/giving back/grow the game".

Parents grow the game BTW, not tour players. They might spark some interest but if parents don't participate with their kids it will largely not stick no matter who acts like a perfect gentleman on TV.

I can't wait until a player is mid hatchet strike and a caddie screams THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

Parents can indeed have a significant influence on a child's interest in any activity. If parents do not provide opportunities for their children to experience golf (or any other activity for that matter) it is not likely that the youngin' can learn to participate.

That said, anyone who thinks that professional athletes are not role models for kids is kidding themselves, I think. Ever heard of a kid pretending to be 'dad' sinking a putt to win a major, or hitting a shot to win an NBA championship, or catching a pass to win the Super Bowl? Not likely, unless the kid has a parent who plays the sport professionally.

When I was growing up, the son of two non-sports parents, I was fortunate enough to be driven to practices and taken to watch games by my parents. But my role models were the professional athletes that I grew up watching. I won numerous NBA titles, Super Bowls, and PGA titles growing up (fantasy, of course) and I was a always Jerry West, Walt Frazier, Jack Nicklaus, etc when I did it - I was never 'dad'.

My dad and mom are now my heroes (and have been for years) but growing up I idolized professional athletes and aspired to be like them. Of course, maybe I'm just weird.

If winning was easy, losers would do it.

Now there's a golf event for the Olympics I can get behind - club tossing.

The Olympics should be about higher, farther, faster stuff. No scoring and few rules. Stay behind the line and toss that sucker as far as you can.

The person who can throw it the farthest is a gold medal tosser...

i don’t need no stinkin’ shift key

The problem with club throwing is that it has the potential to injure someone. I've seen clubs thrown at a golf card that rebound towards someone. The shaft snaps and can go anywhere. There are better ways to express anger. I try to be alert and careful if someone in my group starts throwing clubs. Usually a word or two pointing out the danger is enough to get the club-throwers attention. If not, they are not welcome in our group again.

But given the opportunity, I will play a round of golf with Rory. If he starts throwing clubs, I'll have a word with him. :)

Where was this thread the other day when Justin Rose launched his 3 wood, or does that not count?

Sportspeople shouldn't be role models, regardless of who they are.

Sadly they are role models whether they (or you) wish to be or not. I see that in the sports I officiate, too many kids, even in upper levels, mimic what they see and try to act like the professionals they see on TV or streaming on their device, and it is the same for the musicians, actors, and other celebrities they see and/or hear about. You act like a jerk in front of a camera (and yes, Phil did too on the 18th) you deserved to get some static over it.

Sorry, that's just how it is. Let's be honest, I would love to see more heroes like those who serve our respective countries get much more attention then they do. The problem those people do not get the time of day in our leftist-driven media culture. Maybe one day it will change.
