two, in few days when the isi I just got on the bay arrive.  Got them with zz65 cushin shafts to see if they help with my elbow. Will be the third time I’ve had isi in the bag.
 

this time though I’m keeping the iE1 around, been striking the ball well with them.  
wonder if ping would install the cushin in them, provided I think they are effective in the isi.    Know they used to but seems their time may have passed.  Haven’t seen them offered in the new stuff.

I started down the road of building myself iron sets a few years ago.  Built myself a little build-table, and then things escalated.  Initially I just wanted to build some Japanese forged irons, which was a big departure from the Ping GMAX irons I was playing at the time.  Turns out, I'm an ok ball striker, so small forged heads have been fine.  In fact, my Arrcos data has steadily improved even when playing blades.

 

Initially I wanted to build up a set from a bunch of different brands.  So the first 8-10 sets are from Mizuno, Yamaha, Bridgestone, Srixon, TM, Adams etc.  Most all were forged cavity backs, as that seemed to be a good stepping stone.  Then I got a taste for some blades, so I started seeking out blades.  Then I started seeking out really obscure stuff like the Wood Brothers blades, Maxfli Aussie blades, etc.

 

Latest builds have been a bit more custom.  I've stripped them raw, done gun-blue, even built up a set of one-length 5-PW set using some crusty rusty MacGregor Pro-C heads I got super cheap.  

 

Most sets I find for $100 or less, just heads.  Sometimes with miss-matched shafts too.  I tend to build everything with lighter weight and R/A/L flex graphite shafts.  I'm average 50yo swing speed with smooth tempo, so I really like the combo of a 50-60g graphite shaft with a small forged head.  

 

Current count is 32 built sets, with five more sets of heads in the wings.  Just epoxied the shafts into the Mizuno MS-11 heads at lunch.  Next project is going to be a custom ground set of MacGregors.  They have a really ugly head design, , but the older square toed look I want is there.  I've stripped the chrome off, next step is some grinding and shaping.  I'm thinking my own set of Itobori looking heads, with the flat grinding to them.

Actually down to two sets now, from 4 and have been known to churn through a few options in a season. Sets remaining are my 962b set that shot my all-time low round in competition, these are currently in a display box…and my current set in signature,  Titleist ‘21 t100 with recoil proto 125f4.

I had so many sets the last 6 years. Some sets I bought-sold-bought, typical of any of us.

 

Then, in March of this year I tried the 2023 Taylormade P770's and they worked very well. It's not that I got tired of trying different sets, it's just that I wasn't improving in my confidence or GIR's. I found out that my real goal was to pull the club from my bag, and not look at it, but select it based on the target I wanted to hit. Like I was taking a tool off my garage wall to do a specific job. 

 

And, I didn't "settle" on the 770's, they just provided me with an overall performance/feel/consistency that I was after.

 

So, I'm down to two sets of P770's with the exact same shafts, soft-stepped 1x

 

Mitsubishi Rayon Ultralite 55g in R-flex, made for Adams Golf.

 

I plan on playing them for the foreseeable future, really. 

 

(But I will look at the next gen of P770's with some interest, whenever that may be).

 

Also, I might be getting old (74) and losing interest in gear, and also wanting to pursue cycling more often, spend more time painting with acrylics and take cornet lessons to be able to play a duet with my grandson (who took up the violin and is advancing rapidly!).

Playing the wilson blades 4-PW (fantastic irons and the PXG is a very close second), 0311ST 3i and GW(52°).  The set is rounded out with Glide Eye2 58° and Blueprint 2i and Eye2 1-iron (when circumstances dictate for those two which is generally walking versus cart).

 

In most instances it is just the 3 on down to the 58.  That sacrifices long approaches on par fives but I find my score is generally the same and is lighter to carry.
