What are the major differences between the S55 and its predecessor the S56? I see occasional posts praising the S56, which looks good to me, but nothing close to the love for the S55.

Not sure any of the differences are major, but the S55s have a slightly larger CTP which sits a little deeper in the head and lowers the center of gravity. The offset, bounce, and steel (17-4) are all the same. The S56 might have been PINGs last 2-iron, though.

I also vaguely remember hearing that the placement or amount of tungsten in the toe was specific to each head in the S55s.

Certainly similar in many ways to both the the S56s and the iBlades, but the S55s just seem to be a perfect combination of factors.

The S55 has a higher CG than the S56.  It's also a little farther forward.

Here's what PING said in their brochure:

S55 dif.jpg

Makes me wonder what they're using as a comparison in calling it low.  Maybe the ISI-K?  LOL  (ISI-K CG is 0.883")

Here is the Actual vertical CG for the S series Pings (taken from GolfWorks measurements):

S59 - .742

S58 - .675

S57 - .779

S56 - .797

S55 - .807

Another example of marketing illusion, I guess.

Yeah, that's interesting. I stand corrected. When it's marketing vs. Maltby, I'll defer to Maltby.

Those figures are remarkable when you consider how much more forgiving overall the S55 is. (40 points better than the S56 and 164 points more forgiving than iBlades)

The final MPF score isn't really a measurement of forgiveness.  Actual forgiveness, in strict science terms, is the MOI measurement in MPF.  That's the measure of the clubhead's resistance to twisting on off center contact.

Ralph Maltby places a higher importance on the CG being low and as far from the hosel as possible.  Clubs that are made such are the ones that score well.  Clubs with higher CGs, even if they have a high MOI, don't score as well, hence some of the MPF scores for clubs like the i210, or even some of the G series from Ping.

It matters more if the clubs are in the same category, according to Maltby’s guidance, and the s55 and s56 are. A difference of 40 points is not substantial on the MPF scale. You might not be able to tell any difference.

Just picked up a pretty clean set of black dots 3 - 9 iron. Hopefully I'll be able to get a PW from Ping. Sold my last set of 55's before a cross country move in 2020 and have missed them since. Moving from the PNW to the SE, I'm excited to see how the s55's do in the bermuda grass, my current i25s get a little sticky in it out here. I think this is my favorite WRX thread of all time haha.

Had a set I hit really good earlier this spring .. so I sold them on the BST forum.   Pm'ed the guy hoping I could buy them back, he already sent them to Ping to get some work done .. dam ..  8 sets of various makes and models later found a set online yesterday.. they will be here Monday.. possibly the best iron ever made!

Hopefully motivating the PING engineers to search back into the archives of that phenomenal iron line. And some time in the future, FINALLY, get us all a proper refresh of them!

They really ought to make a few tweaks, although I don’t know what they would be, and re-release it.

Cutting down on the number of clubs with 3* gaps would be a good start...

Great BAG

G400 and s55 all time classics.  Bag looks familiar. ;o)

Being a little nit picky ….I think they could maybe offer a little heel or trailing grind and a slightly heavier toe weight … if they wanted to launch s55 v2’s

19 hours ago, Kenny Lee Puckett said:

Honestly dmDC? If they just regurgitated the iron exactly as it is, and made it in the 8620 steel PING now currently uses a lot, I would be thrilled. IMO there is nothing else about the iron's design that is deficient.  Because of that I've never deviated from them.

I've had mine back in play for about 3-4 weeks now (coming off a 2 month stint with the zx7s). Hitting more greens again, scores are dropping back down, and confidence is soaring. Shot a career best with these two weekends ago. Also, put the Glide 2.0 stealths back in play (another dumb decision to move away from). So glad to have these back. Might have to order up replacement backups in the short irons (for future use) before they are completely gone from PING.

You say that, but they've just trademarked `S159` and `S259`. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
