Stuck on PING s55's

I completely understand why half a dozen pros including Bubba, Mackenzie Hughes, Carlos Ortiz and Austin Cook are still playing these irons.

I have a set in good shape that I reshafted with Obans and some fun ferrules. Sent them into PING to have the lofts strengthened a degree (as much for the bounce as the distance). Also to make the swing weights exactly what they should've been and give them some colorful paint. The specs are now absolutely dead on, and it's nice knowing I'll never have to do it again. As has been said, these heads are indestructible (and you have to love steel that has a memory). I only wish they'd made them without the chrome because they'd look good even longer. If I knew how to take out the inserts, I'd probably have them stripped. New project for this winter.

What ferrules are those? I tried so hard to find something other than black, but couldnt find any collared ferrules in color.

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

that's a good lookin' club

My 55's are paired with project x LZ's but I do have some oban ct 115s to swap....might have to try that combo!

Where did you find those ferrules?  Ping have these strange ferrules that sit below hosel...

Very good catch! The ferrules are BB&F Co "Purple Dream." To get them to work, I ordered the same number of PING ferrules from TheGolfWorks (item# BB9108) and cut the little collars off them with a sharp carpet knife to fill the extra space in the hosels. An extra step to the process, but I didn't want to take any chances.

Thats a great idea as the heads won't sit right without those.

Just reshafted my S55 with some $ Taper 125, such a nice feel to these S55, no denying them.  Probably the 4th time around for me with a set of these.

Been gaming these again, too.  The feel of a pured S55 is addicting to me.  I probably would benefit from something a little more helpful but I can't put these down.

I’m still stuck on my set, I have tried a few

other irons but always so back to the S55’s! I wish it came with a set gap wedge.

Ping Glides blend well IMHO.

I've got a 50* and a 54*.

I put my S55s back in the bag at the start of July after getting loose with my z745 PW approaches and they really are special irons. The forgiveness for such a compact head is excellent.

I give up 1/2 to 1 club length wise (the z7s are stronger lofted and have graphite shafts) but as long as I gap correctly to my hybrids it doesn't matter.

I was always playing around with new irons to try and replace the S55s or z7s, but these now 7-8yr old irons are staying put.

Edit: I'm speaking of the OG Ping Glide or Glide 2.0 - cannot speak to ones newer than that.

Yep, Ping Glide 50 is like a set wedge for me and then my 54 and 58 are sort of my “true wedges.”

I am playing the Glide 2.0 stealths.  I have to say, they flow nicely with the set but on top of that, they may be the best wedges I have ever played.  LOVE these things and may be a Ping wedge convert from here on out.

I have a set as a backup for my iblades.  I like the iblades better but have used the s55's the first couple rounds this year  (did not get out until a couple weeks ago).  I also loved the S59's.  The s56's were ok.  I picked up the s55's a couple years ago used (in great shape).  I had Ping adjust the lie angles and they were good to go.

The best irons I have owned. I don't want to say its impossible to hit a clunker but they are so consistent. Since this picture was taken I added a lob wedge (58*) Glide in stealth, looks fancy.

Now I need to get new fairway woods/hybrids to complete the bag, not sure where to start with that though.

What do you like better about the iBlades?  I have only demoed the iBlade but am gaming the S55.  I just sold my Z785s so now all I have are the S55 but I am planning on going to get fit for something and the iBlades are on the radar, but I am going in open to ANYTHING as long as it's built for me.  6 iron against 6 iron, the S55 and iBlade were near identical in numbers for me, with the feel going to the S55 but the iBlade looked a touch bigger/more forgiving.

The iblades are a touch more forgiving.  You can't go wrong with either club.  Aesthetically, I find the iblades more appealing.  But cosmetics are 100% opinion.

I’ve reshafted a number of Ping sets over the years. To combat the collared ferrule concern, I cut a piece of double sided grip tape into a section about 4” long and about 1 CM wide and just wrap it around the shaft at the depth where the collar would sit (you have to seat the ferrule on the shaft first). It fills the space of the collar nicely. Very solid once the epoxy cures. I’ve never had any issues with it, and have probably shafted 8-10 sets using this method.

I currently play s55’s and just had an iron fitting. I hit zx7, tc 201, p7mc, apex tcb, t100 and i210s. The i210s were the only iron that gave me better results. I struggle with height and spin (too low) and the i210 gave me an extra 10 ft in height and another 2-3 degrees landing angle.

The S55’s were second best in all the numbers.

S56 guy here - tuff to beat the i210 especially when getting into the longer irons. Always wanted s55 but stuck to the s56.....now awaiting i59 short irons

I have tried several Ping irons - iblade, blueprints, i210, i200, g400, g410. Numbers wise the s55 is the perfect blend of forgiveness and distance. It has very little to no offset which I like. The thin soles cut through thick grass and can pick the ball off tight lies. Usually with thin soles there is little forgiveness however with the tungsten in the toes of the irons, they are very forgiving.

The s55 is an amazing club head that in my opinion is the best Ping ever made - even compared to other brands it would be very hard to beat. The combination is just amazing. I now understand why Bubba Watson has not switched and not intending to switch!
