Stuck on PING s55's

Recommended Posts

I've changed irons a few times since buying my S55's in great used shape. Still held onto the 55's, and won't be getting rid of them. They are now in a back-up, but they won't accept the role, and keep jumping into the main bag ;-)

In the Wilson Exo II:
Driver - 2017 Taylormade M1
3 wood - 2016 Taylormade M1
7 wood - Callaway XR Steelhead Heavenwood
Irons Staff - Wilson C300 Forged 4-GW
Wedges - Cleveland RTX 4 54* / 58*
Putter - Wilson Staff Infinite Windy City

Just as easy to hit as the s55's. Easier to work the ball. Better turf interaction. Better from the rough

Longer than the s55's in power spec lofts, particularly the 6 and 7 irons

Can hit it even lower with knockdowns

More "solid" feel if that makes sense

Well the S55s have seen off another set: 919 Tours. Stiffest competition yet.

They got a 25-ish round run and if I didn't have the Pings, I might think the 919Ts were it. Had Recoil 95s in the Mizzies and now and again I felt the swing got away from me with them, so maybe with some C-Taper Lites they might have closed what's left of the gap.

Reckon Blueprints or i210s are the only things that might do it :-)

I have a near new set of 919T's in the basement. Recoil 95, +3/4" 1* flat and 1* strong .. blueprints mocked them

I did just clear out $1k worth of golf stuff the last 4 weeks :-)

Like you I'm 6 iron down... but that's still a pricey 5 clubs. Will keep trolling eBay, there is that $800-something set on there right now.

Still gaming the S57's in a backup set. Great clubs, but I would jump at a set of new stock S55's.

I'm considering parting with my trusty S55s... basically bone stock with CFS shafts.

I don't know though. They're so good.

I’ve found much better since then. Lol

Just keep them if it’s a white elephant to you .

Much better heads and shafts nowadays. The CFS shafts were crap. I like how mentioned S55s are with graphite shafts in this ? lol listen to yourselves? Just keep them since there is no resale value or market segment for used buyers.

Ugh Hum blueprints?

I actually like the CFS shafts and have them in my S55s. Heads are very forgiving for being a smaller profile and the look is spot on (although I understand some may not want the white line at the bottom)

I like the subtle grey too, unlike some of the chintzy shine you get on irons like the Callaway Apex MBs for example ;-) I don't know why anyone would pick them over a set of Razr X MBs or Protos.

I've tried everything and can't get past the S56/KBS Tour 120S (even the S55 couldn't kick them out). Just sold a set of MP-18SC on eBay which were beautiful, but I can't help wanting to play the Pings.

Hot take! There are about half a dozen PGA tour players on Ping's staff alone who would disagree with you that today's heads are "much better".

Well, I’ve pulled the trigger. S55 irons will be here next week. Looking forward to seeing how they get along with my swing.

You won’t be disappointed! I’m thinking of unloading my srixon 585/785/zforged combo set and my Callaway 18mb raw set since they just sit in the garage while the s55’s are in the bag and can’t see them going anywhere!

I have S56 and I tried the Iblade and just didn't get along with them at all. Granted I went with a different shaft so I'm sure it was a combination of both. I'm wishing I'd gotten a set of S55 when they were still available. I've been looking, but I haven't been able to find a set that are in really good condition. I didn't find them to be really much different than S56 when they came out, but I think they look a little cleaner and, well the S56 are pretty old.

Update time: my (new to me) s55 irons arrived yesterday and I took them for an extensive range session and walked a few holes for good measure. I get it now...the s55's are the bees' knees. I took my 900Fs with me for a comparison. The 900F's are a little longer due to the lofts being stronger but the s55 shot dispersion, feel, and turf interaction are exactly what I am looking for. The 900Fs are awesome irons and I'm not taking anything away from them because I've had them in the bag since 2016 and love the forged offerings from Mizuno. However, the s55 iron is something unique. I've hit the i210, iBlade and the Blueprint in the last few weeks with the expectation I would end up with the i210s. That's not going to happen for the time being: I'm going to put the s55's in the bag for 15 rounds and see what I think after that. My concern when I bought them is they would be too much of a players' iron with not enough forgiveness...they are equal to the 900Fs in terms of forgiveness and that's a very good thing.

Great review. There is something about them. I’ve had them with the wrong shaft and sold them, and bought them again. But to hear them hanging with the 900 Forged in forgiveness is impressive. To me, the 900F is excellent, but just a little too long heel to toe, and the S55 is just right. Have a low COG and surprisingly easy to launch. Tried them in X100 shafts and did not go well, went to PX Rifles 5.5 and it was so good.
