Today, commercial golf jumped the shark. Now we must choose between real golf and exhibition golf. Media will try to blur the line between the two and make you pay on TV and on your local course. TV has jumped the shark here.

 

Tiger might be bigger than the game now, but going forward no one else is. Not close. Unless we discover through The Match that golf viewers are suckers for this programming. If so, pay up on TV and kiss your local real golf goodbye. Why? Because Tour golf increases golf viewers, not golf players.

I know most will be cynics, and I would've loved the purse to be their own money, but wow, it was neat to watch.

 

Even if the golf was sub-par, the format was neat, and I would hope similar matches would have an audience.

 

If other golfers could cash in, why wouldn't they? And if they can't, don't knock on Tiger or Phil.

So Rory was right after all... this match was indeed 15 years too late. The standard of golf was pretty shocking at times, and the commentary from both Tiger & Phil and the booth was cringeworthy quite often.

 

Disagree. It was well worth the $20. 15 years ago it would have been worth $100 due to the tiger hype machine , But that’s another subject entirely.

 

Rory plus anyone else wouldn’t have generated as many viewers as today. Rory’s point was that it was a bad idea , a “ fail” as the young kids would say. Well. It really wasn’t. Too many people watched go say that. Room for improvement? Yes. But 15 years ago all we’d have seen different is a little less gracious tiger and maybe a Phil who would have took the win form a tiger miss . Otherwise same same. Either could have won 15 years ago. Same as today.

 

Not ready looking to argue with you. Just saying that Rory’s point missed the mark. Heck. You even had a party of the elite young guns watching it together at Spieths pad. This thread was full of folks admitting to buying it at the last moment after they said they wouldn’t. And on and on. Hardly a non story like Rory insinuated it would be.

Agree 100%. It's not a movie and you can't script in drama (chip in on 17 was pretty cool though). 2 humans playing golf couldn't ever be THAT interesting, so what were people expecting? Commentary wasn't great but it never is.

 

And if you put anyone but tiger or Phil in this match, 10 or so people would pay for it.

I don't have the same trust in Tiger to make key putts that he used to back in his prime. Today was another reason to think that.

I don’t think mentally Tiger can handle the pressure quite like he use to. The Tour Champ’s may have been the exception as we’ve seen him looking mentally fragile in the key pressure moments time and again this season. I’m really curious to see how he stacks up next season.

If I would have paid it still would have been worth $20. Decent entertainment the last few holes that 3 of us were watching intently.

 

Just the kind of thing Phil will enjoy forever and Tiger won't worry about after he wins a major next year.
