I liked the idea overall. Would have been a lot better had they played better, trash talked, and thrown in some interesting side bets. None of that happened.

 

Therein lies the problem with 1 vs 1 on TV. Shell's Wonderful World did this for years. I still remember a video of Byron Nelson beating someone at Pine Valley on that show and I think his opponent shot over 85. It looked like one of us out there. Seriously. The guy topped some shots. Hogan beat Snead by 10+ shots once. It was all bad TV. You can't control when somebody doesn't have it that day

Just to set the record straight, Gene Littler shot a 76 that day to lose by two to Nelson who shot 74. Littler had a quad on the fifth hole.

What I did like about this format was being able to see every inch of that beautiful course--something that you don't get with regular programing. I also enjoyed not hearing "We know a thing or two." and "Rolex a history making watch." every five minutes.

I caught that Shell match from 1962 just to see both Byron Nelson and Pine Valley. Sadly, it was GENE LITTLER who -- you're right -- was completely off his game that day and was just demolished by 50-year-old Nelson. (Littler did stiff a few on the closing holes but that only made it a bit closer.)

 

And as for today.... sorry, chumps -- I too caught it all for free.... just by dialing up Bleacher Report on the ol' computer. Of course, this borefest required that I was also READING A BOOK at the same time. The much-hyped "trash talk" couldn't have been more lame, the golf was less than stellar and of course, the what... 15 announcers had to fill with oceans of useless, mindless drivel. Yeah, throw in plenty of "odds" and tell me "what Vegas thinks." All the betting talk? Who gives a rat's a-s-s?" And if this was PPV, what was with all the ads? Barkley and Jackson clowning it up for Capital One? Just shoot me.

 

Anybody anticipating a "re-match" next year should have his head examined; both players will be even more over the hill. But at least right now, Mickelson, manager Steve Loy, Tiger Woods and "Steiny" are kicking back, just dee-lighted that "Can you believe we got sponsors to shell out millions just so we could create our own payday? What SUCKERS!"

I dunno. They used to,play the Pebble Beech pro am at Cyprus. Pine Valley hosts amateur events. They both would be great for small events with little infrastructure and galleries. Money talks.

 

But let’s be honest. The MGM bank rolled this thing. They cleared a profit on prop bets alone. This was about one thing. Cha Ching!
