Pretty much says what most people here feel...

BTW, what's to stop these two from making a private side deal like I have in poker tournaments...in other words, lets each take 4mm and play for 1mm?

Honor?

And the fact that neither of them need the money?

<< I don't see why people have to be so negative on it. Why is it so polarizing? Because they are already rich and playing for $9 million that isn't theirs (yet)? That literally describes the PGA Tour. A bunch of rich guys playing for millions every week. >>

You're overlooking a couple of important points. First of all, every week the PGA Tour stages a legitimate competition, one where victory comes not only with prize money, but the honor of winning, FedEx Cup points, World Ranking points, plus exemptions, along with invites to golf's major events. This faked-up over-the-hill reality TV show offers none of the above so they have to promote it as featuring "trash talk," as if they're going to fire off even ONE interesting jab and potential "side bets" for say, $50,000. (Is Phil promising to bet with his own money or the sponsor's?) One more thing: more than anything else, this fiasco definitely IS NOT "winner take all." Anyone who thinks the loser is going away penniless is positively dreaming. BOTH will receive hefty paydays just for showing up. One more ingredient very much unlike the PGA Tour.

But the bottom line is this. Sure, 20 bucks is nothing but it's not the price that's the problem. It's the fact that these two way-past-prime golfers are now trying to dig into our pockets simply to pad their own. It's a cynical cash-grab with zero at stake. And, quite simply, many of us resent that.

There are many no-cut events on the PGA Tour where guys get paid "just for showing up" (TOC, all the WGC's, BMW, Tour Championship, CIMB, etc).

Also guys often get paid hefty appearances fees to go to certain events. So they literally do indeed get paid just for showing up. Strangely I don't hear anyone crying about that.

Here's the beauty of it---you don't have to buy it!

If you don't think the show they will put on is worth $20 and your time, then don't buy it! That's the beauty of this mostly free market system.

But again, it is funny to me that you hone in on this event to bring out the "cynical cash-grab" argument. You do realize that basically our entire American economy, if you take a negative stance on it, is a cynical cash grab? I mean how many things do you buy that you actually need?

There must be some jealousy of the fact that Tiger and Phil can play golf and make this much money.

Why don't you resent the endorsement money that guys get every month just for wearing certain products, appearing in commercials, etc. I could go on all day with examples of things that are equally a "cash-grab" or even more of a "cash-grab with zero at stake" that no one ever complains about because they've just accepted it as normal.

Are you up in arms about the fact that Tiger has gotten paid $10 million-$80 million a year for the past 22 years just for wearing Nike clothes? I must have missed the thread on that...

Honor?...one guy gave back $1mm+ to the SEC for insider trading profits...don't need to go into Tiger's personal life! I'm not attacking them...but pointing out that these two are flawed human beings like the rest of us. Neither are saints.

As for needing the money...as the quote goes, "you can never be too rich or too thin"...

Last night, I saw a promotional commercial for this show with some "trash talk." Let's just say it is very different when someone says "Not happnin', homes," and "It is not happening" with a giggle.

Why in heck aren't they playing with hickories or one club or kids clubs or something that can truly showcase their skill, not their intense lack of street cred?

Honestly, I do hope it is good. The game needs levity and more fun. I just can't bring myself to watch it, cringing and peeking between my fingers.

Rory isn't wrong.

A few weeks ago he was interested and said he'd buy it. Now he changed his mind. He's better off using that 5 hours to work on his own game anyway.

While Rory may or may not need to work on his game per all of the WRX experts his statement quoted above is still 100% correct regardless of his previous comment. Because someone changes their mind about something doesn't mean they are wrong. Ever change your mind about anything? FWIW I'm not a Rory fan on any level but he is correct on the TW/PM match. Interesting how the truth bothers people. <oh well>

Very true. He can use the 5 hours practice for sure.

Blows my mind he’d make this comment after not just seeing but experiencing the Sunday round at east lake with tiger. He got to taste how that is. And now says “ eh. No big deal. Maybe 15 years ago “. That’s pure hate and jealousy. No other explanation.

Hyberbole much?

Rory's not wrong. 10-15 years ago, at least this contrived cash grab would have been #1 vs #2. Today, its more like #8 vs #30.
