This is going to be like pay porn at 2 AM on an out if town business trip. No one prepays at the desk when they check-in. It's Thanksgiving, your hungover, bloated, football games get boring and you remember... the Match. What's 20 bucks. No one wants to admit they're the sucker 3 weeks out, but no one wants to miss it either. Just in case. What if it's priceless. They both play lights out!?!

On a website where the average person owns 24 driver shafts, 36 putters, 4 rotating sets of irons, 29 pairs of golf shoes, 8 different shades of white belts, and special outfits for every degree from 50-90 but heaven forbid we spend $20 on two of the greatest golfers of our time. I would venture to say that the average person on here averages $20 a day when they figure how much they spent on golf for the year. I don't care if tiger and phil have a pillow fight with pillows stuffed with hundreds while wearing high heels, I'm watching it. I don't care if they use each others clubs every other shot, I'm watching it. I will bask in its glory and know that this is a moment that I will never forget all while wearing my $60 Tiger vs phil t-shirt and tiger print underwear.

This is true! It's amazing how many who don't care anything about this match ...take the time and effort to type the words telling all who will listen...how much they won't watch the match!! Yay right! I'll watch and when one of them wins 9 million and gives nothing to charity ...I'll like it even more!!!

You guys just don't get it. It's not all about the money it's about value and then having to dedicate 3 hours to watch. With ppv the casual viewers and the people that only have 1 hour to watch aren't buying it. That is an exponentially larger market missed.

Simply put, if you pay for it, you're going to feel compelled to watch the entire event, shot by shot, and I doubt that's appealing to most, especially when there's other things to do that day for most.

Honestly the wrx commentary will be more far more entertaining and won't require dedicated time to follow. We will catch the highlights afterwards.

The survey I posted shows just over 15% of wrxers willing to buy it. Imagine how many fewer non-wrx types are willing to buy it?

I get what you're saying in principle and all, but I just don't think people - especially guys - have that much to do on Black Friday that would preclude dedicating 3 hours to watching this. And the cost, a paltry $20, is not going to break the bank for most people who can afford to play golf as a hobby.

Most folks that host Thanksgiving will probably lay around the house and rationalize why it's too early to get out the Christmas stuff out yet, or simply tune in while putting some of their stuff up. Others that are out with the wife shopping etc. will be ready for a respite and duck into a local watering hole which will likely have purchased the event. If enough bars get on board they probably don't even need many personal household buys to make decent money from the broadcast.

Haney been promoting this heavy for a few weeks, not sure if he's getting paid or just thinks it's good for golf. I like the idea that they will be mic'd up, but I see that getting old by the 6th hole and just sounding forced. Both will be very aware they are mic'd so any chatter will be for our benefit and not provide any real insight to what might be discussed during a real round of golf.

I'd be more interested if there was other pairings to follow, Reed vs Spieth, DJ vs Koepka, Rickie vs Bryson or Brian Harman and some other fun or interesting matchups.

Driver - Callaway Paradym
Woods - Callaway Paradym 3W
Hybrids - XXIO 10 3H, 4H, 5H
Irons - Callaway Paradym 6-52*
Wedge - PXG Forged 56**
Putter - Ping TYNE C
Ball - Titleist AVX

Right now I think the ultimate pairing would be Spieth & Thomas. Would kill to see that.

Of course Elkington and Bubba would be awesome too. Miked up and uncensored :-)

Not cheap.

I'll throw a $10 tip on a $20 check if the bartender makes an especially nice scotch.

But this thing stinks to high heaven (to borrow the parlance of Maude Lebowski ; )

Even if they lower the price to $3, I ain't buyin

Nah you still don't understand. Hint: the conversation on wrx is sometimes far more entertaining than the golf itself. This is one of those instances.

BTW - I posted the survey because I had a hunch that ppv would be a flop. The massiveness of flop far exceeded my expectations :)

This does not literally or even vaguely compare to a PGA Tour event. Those guys earn their money. This ain't that.

I don't like crass commercialism. This is it. But it isn't important, and certainly not polarizing, lol. People like different things and different people. Some think Phil is the next Bill Murray, some think he's Mr. Rogers. But I do think it's great that there is an audience for this so-called match. I hope it does well and is everything they say it will be.

"This ain't that"...well I guess when you put it that way...

These guys are earning their money. Some big companies felt it was worth putting up $9 million. A Tiger vs. Phil match's perceived market value has risen to this high number, that's all. We should be celebrating that golf and these golfer's economic value is considered that high.

A lot of money will go to charity just like it does at PGA Tour events.

Of course this lacks many of the components of a normal PGA Tour event, but some of the basics are the same. Professional golfers playing for a large purse on TV. Sponsors putting up the cash.

This is not "crass commercialism". You can make a strong argument that the PGA Tour is just disguised commercialism. If the money dried up, and there weren't millions of dollars to be made, the whole thing would disappear overnight.

How do you feel about Jack Nicklaus making ~$30 million a year for the past 10 years, mostly without lifting a finger (the majority of his earnings coming just from licensing his name and likeness to other companies)? Crass commercialism?

If this match is entertaining and people get their money's worth and money goes to charity, what's wrong with that?

Yup crass commercialism. It is rampant in golf, and will continue to be as long as we pay for shows like this. But that's just me. I'm old and I've seen it all and I am tired of most. Even the Skins game was better entertainment than the Buff vs the Belly, plus it was $20 cheaper. BTW, I don't blindly pay for "things" like clubs and balls, I pay for value and perceived value. I don't perceive $20 worth of fannr-time value here. Plus it is the principle of having to pay. Rubs me the wrong way for a show like this. But that is only my opinion. That's how I view it. This isn't even a debate. Each to his own view of the world. Be nice, behave yourself, think before you speak, and humanity hsppens. Enjoy the show.

Okay, I can appreciate and respect your perspective since it sounds consistent toward many things.

At first I thought that you only felt this particular event was crass commercialism.

I've just found it annoying that some people have said things like "these guys should be putting up their own money", etc. Why? Why is this event being held to a standard to which we don't hold anything else? Tiger and Phil are the only reasons people might actually tune in, and people want them to put up the money, too?

Just because it's different and PPV and Tiger and Phil people are just ripping it to shreds and taking it way too seriously.

don't feel like going through all the posts but if tiger and phil are microphoned and you can here all the smack talk it might be worth it

No good smack talk, it will only contrived, filtered and tame. Real smack talk is often crass and sometimes politically incorrect. Neither one is going to risk that given that too many Americans top past time is to be offended about others and express their outrage on social media.

I agree. The people to blame here are those promoting this event and treating it like the fight of the century. That is what drew the line and started the discussion. Enjoy it for what it is, if you think it is worth an extra $20.

<< I don't see why people have to be so negative on it. Why is it so polarizing? Because they are already rich and playing for $9 million that isn't theirs (yet)? That literally describes the PGA Tour. A bunch of rich guys playing for millions every week. >>

You're overlooking a couple of important points. First of all, every week the PGA Tour stages a legitimate competition, one where victory comes not only with prize money, but the honor of winning, FedEx Cup points, World Ranking points, plus exemptions, along with invites to golf's major events. This faked-up over-the-hill reality TV show offers none of the above so they have to promote it as featuring "trash talk," as if they're going to fire off even ONE interesting jab and potential "side bets" for say, $50,000. (Is Phil promising to bet with his own money or the sponsor's?) One more thing: more than anything else, this fiasco definitely IS NOT "winner take all." Anyone who thinks the loser is going away penniless is positively dreaming. BOTH will receive hefty paydays just for showing up. One more ingredient very much unlike the PGA Tour.

But the bottom line is this. Sure, 20 bucks is nothing but it's not the price that's the problem. It's the fact that these two way-past-prime golfers are now trying to dig into our pockets simply to pad their own. It's a cynical cash-grab with zero at stake. And, quite simply, many of us resent that.

MEH...doesn't bother me at all. And 20 bucks is...well just 20 bucks.

This could be the start of "Friday Night Golf" Each Friday..8 players do a set of Match play or metal..4 winners take on another group of winners..while the losing bracket plays another losing bracket for elimination. So forth and so forth until you have a championship round to decide the ultimate champion. Could be condensed down to 3 hour show..and wouldn't have to be live.

Format like this is taking over competitive BASS fishing. They have eliminated entry fees in the new BPT/MLF format and in doing so...have drawn 85% of the best bass fisherman to this new format.

Things change fast...and sometimes the old ways aren't always the best ways.

Oh yay...Tiger and Phill...almost forgot..super way to test the water and have fun doing it!

Was talking about it today and think the PPV may make it more interesting. No commercial breaks will be nice. I do wish there was some skin it. I think Phil should get 2 shots per side. Should be an autopress Nassau or some real golf bet to make it more interesting. I'll watch mostly to see Shadow Creek. Figure it will save me 480 bucks as I won't need to play it after I watch.
