Here is my review of the Speed LD F from when I was in a group where it was being played. I wrote this in 2007.

 

Sweet Jesus what a horrible sounding club. It sounds like a half empty Coke can hitting a hub-cap.

Worst: Any early Nike driver, any mid-2000’s Callaway, most recent Ping “G” drivers.

For me the the Vapor Flex sound > VFP. VFP WAY TOO TINNY.

 

OG Flex > Vapor Flex > Vapor Fly Pro.

 

Worst of all time = Sumo Squared I forgot about the Callaway C4. That s*** was terrible

Best - I had one of the very last persimmon woods made by a major manufacturer (Ping ISI Tour), there was nothing quite like the woody crack off the face on a well struck shot. All you young guys that have only ever hit titanium drivers don't know what you are missing in terms of feel and sound with a driver. Of course, what you aren't missing is the extra 30 to 40 yards :D

Worst - Has to be the Nike Sumo. The first time someone hit one near me (they were about 15/20 feet away) I almost dove for cover.

.... Amen! Those of us that grew up with wooden bats in Little League and persimmon woods know and love the solid feel and sound they produced. Nothing like that dense feel when you hit a home run and knew it instantly or nutted a big drive. That said, young players that grew up with aluminum bats and titanium woods just have a completely different reference point and I understand why they think the Epic sounded and felt dead.

My Triton with the ti sole plate on sounds like an aluminum baseball bat, almost exactly and is very loud. I run the carbon sole plate, and a Swiffer sheet inside the head after reading about cotton balls reducing sound hahaha, honestly now it sounds pretty decent.

 

My pals Nike Vapor Pro (black one with green highlights) sounds awesome, almost a "whooshing" type sound, I always think it sounds like a sword swinging thru something. *Shaa-wing*

Best - Ping G400 (regular not Max) and TM R9 460

Worst - Nike Sumo and (obscure) Acer XP905 from Hireko. Not square but rivals the Sumo for sheer awfulness.

... Either you got your hands on a defective Fly Z or you are talking about the Fly Z+ which did have a aluminum baseball bat sound. I still have three Fly Z drivers and they have a much more muted and dense sound than most drivers. The sound and feel is one of the reasons I love the Fly Z so much.
