wow. all these persimmon recalls. He had forgotten the feel of those with a found balata ball. Squishy good. His father would carve those balls to pieces. Balls with smiles.The sound was very different.The heads seem so wonderfully tiny, but were huge to JP. It wasn't until these giant second/fourth? wave metal woods showed up that the persimmons became tiny. He always loved the thread wrapping going up the shaft of the older woods. He recalls guy's who'd get all peeved when the thread came loose because of a spaz hosel rocket.

He grew up with a Doug Ford model laminated driver. Total POS but he loved it. Pretty hard to find today, huh? JP beat that thing to fricking death as a 36 hole round teen madman. You had to get your money's worth. Totally too long a shaft, for years he thought their was something wrong with Jack. Perhaps concern was justified.

Best: Cleveland 588 Custom. When flushed it has a unique "whing!" sound that just let's you know it's long gone. Also Titleist 975D, 905*
Worst: Callaway FT-9. sounds like the Devil barfing a bullet into an empty barrel of toxic waste. Well, actually all Callaway drivers are like that.

I took a flier on one of those cheap hot melt guns, and it was totally worth it. My M3 sounds wonderful now. 975D was a great one too. I never owned one, but that soup ladle Cleveland smasmortion was the grossest sounding thing I’ve ever hit.

I have just returned from the range and the guy in the booth next to me had a Cobra - I couldn't see which one but I guess it was an SZ - and it was deafening. I don't get the 'hate' for the sounds from Ping drivers - my G25 had a lovely muted but 'warm' sound.

It's funny how many people say that Nike drivers are the worst sounding drivers ever. My father in law gave me a Nike Str8-Fit driver around 9 years ago when I first started golfing - now I know why. Every time I took that thing to the range to practice, everyone would turn and look at me. It sounded soooo horrible. I finally banished it to the garage about 3 months later - it's actually still laying there. I really need to clean out my garage.

High pitched and LOUD is a terrible combination. I was scared to hit it at the driving range.

I’ve never hit a driver this well that I disliked so much.  The sound is dreadful.  May try the yarn.

To the guys saying SIM for best. Usually sound goes with feel. While the SIM drivers sound pretty good, they feels like hitting rocks. You could have a Callaway Chrome Soft ball on the tee and it feels like a Pinnacle range ball coming off the face with the SIM. I will agree the sound isn't bad though. Just don't understand the disconnect between sound and feel on the SIM.

It is just so personal. I have my SIM paired with an AV Raw Orange 75TX and the feel of the face is glorious, and that's with a TP5X.

Of the ones I have owned:

 

Best sounding driver:  Titleist 905R

 

Worst sounding driver:  Yonex Biam Titanium   That was the one that Phil played early on when he was with Yonex.  It could literally make your ears ring.  But, coming from what I was playing at the time the ball left the tee and rocketed so fast to its apex it was shocking in a good way.

 

Nothing beats the sound of a persimmon driver hitting a balata golf ball.

There was a Hogan driver in the early 2000s that was so loud off the face, I would receive literal reprimands from assistant pros or course staff while hitting balls. ?

 

Beautiful club and pretty reliable ball flight, but it did sound you were about to storm the beach at Normandy and some shrapnel just slammed the side of your transport ship.

 

One guy in our foursome threatened to bring those earmuffs people wear at the gun range.

I imagined it doing that 'pock!' thing that John Daly's howitzer-like drives did. When I hit it, it made a sort of 'cleehhhhhk' sound, like a slightly underinflated cross-ply tyre on an Austin Allegro hitting a pothole.

Surprised to see titleist ts3 mentioned a few times as best sounding. Sounds a bit tingy and loud to me.
