I know this might sound like a dumb question but, do your irons sound ok? I got rid of a set of G425’s because they sound very clacky, if you know what I mean. And I’m also interested in the 699 Pros but if they sound like the 425’s I’d be leery.

I didn't notice anything remarkable about the sound.

My 699 utility is great, feel and sound wise. I hit the PING crossover and it felt hollow.

699 feels crisp, and I haven't noticed a major sound.

On a side note, new sub70 bags were added to their website this week, they look great

https://www.golfsub70.com/sub-70-golf-bags.html

I'm tempted by these... I'd love to hear about durability, though... I'll happily pay more now for a bag that lasts... I'm still gaming a Hoofer from 1999. I'd replace it, but it's in great shape and it's going to last longer than anything I'd replace it with... I'd like another bag though! Contemplating the Vessel, just because the build quality seems high...

699 and 699 pro fall into the distance category... the pro has less offset, but they are basically just hollow head filled with foam. I have the 699 utility and will say I think they are the best feeling “distance” club I’ve ever hit... I haven’t played the 4u a ton but haven’t had any fliers, which are my

main problem with distance irons.

the 639 cavity backs are simply good looking cavity backed irons. I have the five iron. It looks similar To the adams idea forged... I prefer my adams cmbs to the 639, but the 639 are still great clubs. The cmbs are just my favorite clubs... that said, the 639 feel great and I’ve enjoyed having it in my bag.

Their new releases are closer to blades than anything... the ta3s look awesome, as do the 649...

im also gaming the 949 pro hybrid... it was a direct replacement to my adams idea hybrid... it’s awesome.

ive enjoyed the wedges, as well. Feel great and the design is similar to popular wedges... great for the price. I have one of each, and like the jb to open the club face and the 286 for “regular” shots.

How about sole width in comparison to others?

Any photos out there of irons in play after 30-40-75-100 rounds?

In a nut shell, how’s the durability of the finish? Black finish vs satin finish?

I've posted pictures of the wear on the black 5 iron... it's OK... I'd probably go satin.

They apparently have a new coating process, but I'm not sure when it rolls out... I had had the 5 iron for 6 months and still ordered black wedges... so I don't hate the wear. I'll see if I can dig out the pictures.

I had not yet read the thread. A few questions. Sub70 irons are similar to? Play like? Look like?

I am mostly familiar with ping g25/g410 and pxg 0211 (2019). What Sub70 models are in this category? Any comparison photos or comparison reviews out there?

I also have experience with Callaway Apex CF16, CF19, TM 790 and Adams Idea Pro Gold forged. What Sub70 models compare?  Any comparisons out there?

If you've hit the TM P790s then you've pretty much hit the 699s. I feel they are very similar with the 699s being more forgiving across the face.

EDIT: Here's an account of someone comparing his P790s to the 699 Pro:

If anyone is interested, here are a few pics of the Sub 70 639cb (black) against the New Level 623-M and the Callaway Rogue.

Obviously the Rogue is the thickest of the three. The Sub70 and the NL 623-M were both demos.

I also included a picture of the wear on a brand new black 639cb.

I’m going to be putting up my 639cb for sale soon in the BST forum if anyone interested . Loved the clubs, love the brand. Probably will pick up something from them soon as I need one piece from them at least— just need a different shaft that fits me better.

Have you contacted them to see if/how they can help you out with that?

What shaft do you currently have? Are you 639CBs standard or custom?

I don’t think they can . The CB are .370 tip and the shafts that I want are .355

Would still be worth contacting them IMO. I know they’re all about making sure you’re setup correctly, so just see what they say. Worst that could happen is you continue with your current plan of selling them.

First round with the 649 MB Tours (raw) and I'm impressed. They are really easy to hit and feel amazing although they do spin quite a bit. The wind was blowing 20-30mph and it was a challenge judging the correct clubs/distances.

Cool tidbit: I adjusted the lofts and lies before taking them out for the first time and I've never felt anything bend so easy. I'm coming from Scratch SB-1s which is a JDM "soft" steel forged MB and the 649s take less than half the force to move. Barely have to put any pressure on the bar to nudge it a degree or two and there wasn't any bounce back. They are so soft in fact that I worry about them moving during play or practice - especially on mats. If @JaySub70 or anyone can speak about that I'd appreciate it.

It's not a problem to use taper tip shafts with shims. That's what I did with my 649s.

Sub 70 irons look nice.  It's interesting that they target a lower handicap as one would think the bigger market is with higher handicap GI and SGI clubs.  Perhaps in the Direct-to-Consumer market the opposit is true?

Yeah, I’m not sure the exact strategy... the TA3s apparently came about from the opportunity to work with Tommy armour the third... and the 649s maybe got done around the same time.

the 699s are definitely up there in forgiveness, though and they had an SGI iron a year ago... they have a new SGI coming out as well.

My guess is that the players options sees more turnover in iron sets and has more people willing to buy before trying, while the SGI market buys clubs once after trying them at a range day / hitting them.

My most recent interactions with sub70 made me feel like they’ve been insanely busy of late. Still wonderful customer service, but they seemed more hectic... I know they are hiring more customer sales reps... so it sounds like what they are doing is working.

I will disagree. I am in the handicap range you mentioned. I play their 739 irons and could of played the 699s. I have a 699u and hit that just fine. I went with the 739s because after talking to Jason because of some physical issues I have they are a better fit for me. The 739s are a very good GI iron. Equal to anything I tried at the time I was looking. I tried the 699s when I went to there facility and the were pretty easy to hit. I think more people are just talking about there better player irons on the forums. Last I heard they were sell the 739s like crazy. I also saw a post somewhere they are working on a SGI iron.

I also should of mentioned. I went to their facility for a fitting. Jason spent close to an hour with me getting my fit right. Not easy with my physical issues which make it hard to have a consistent swing.  I definitely felt like it didn’t matter to him if I was a 0 or 20 handicap. The same experience when I went back for an adjustment.

It's about a 5 hour drive for me.  Perhaps I will do it if visiting friends in Chicago.  I dont see the 739 on their site.  The other clubs look like "better player" clubs.

You can find the 739 with Google, but it's listed as out of stock.  Possibly discontinued?
