Putter was the worst part of his game today. Missed a ton of great opportunities

Right, but the other parts of his game were a continuance of the previous three days. Therefore, he's actually losing strokes to the field when the putter isn't cooperating. Geez, tough crowd around here.

He lost strokes to the field because of his putting, he gained strokes everywhere else. It was not a continuance of the previous three days. It’s not about being a tough crowd, iits about being accurate. He didn’t need his putter to “save him” he just needed to putt his average

Assuming his 2019 average of +.7 strokes a round, that would put him at -8 instead of -5. So yeah, quite a bit better, but still losing the tournament by 5 strokes.

2 top 10's in a row after long grinds. It is actually a small step forward as he wasn't making cuts or finishing terribly. If he keeps it up he might even qualify for the FedEx final round. This could go either way but at least he seems to try to push forward despite being in a tough spot with his game.

So finishing 2nd wouldn’t be good enough? You act like the only acceptable outcome is winning. It’s ridiculously hard to win out there. It’s simple, as of late he’s been playing much better and is headed in the right direction

2nd is awesome, especially after a long slump. He was contending because of an unsustainable putting performance, which didn't continue on Sunday. That's the only statement I'm making.

Edit: And he would have shot a 69 with an average putting round, assuming all else equal. I added the wrong numbers.

I found this quote funny. Mainly because I remember Mickelson saying basically the same thing a few years ago.

No doubt there's some truth to the fact that you can play the hole nearly as well in many cases. I'm a bad driver of the ball, and I've found that my good scores have little to do with the number of actual fairways hit. It's mainly the severity of the misses where you are taking penalty shots or have no real shot of getting the ball on (or at least up around) the green.

But it's not a fairway. I guess that's what you tell yourself when you are ranked in the 200s in driving accuracy though...

"Well, there’s a spot to miss off the tee on each side, and what the stats don’t show is the four or five first cuts I was in, **which I count as a fairway out here**, so it’s not that far off," he said.

Yep. No way to talk around the difference between last 3 events and say , Riviera. More work to do , but certainly hard to argue against the idea that he’s working it out.

I put money on him this week after last week's good run, he's coming out of his slumber. What better place to win when the mainstage is 2 weeks away, and the pressure is completely off on the horizon. I hope I was right!

This is kind of important, thanks for sharing.

He's been on the leader board, in contention several times recently and has shot himself out of it in the final round. He is looking better though and the putter seems to be out of hibernation, but lack of fairways and missing greens will not help. Hope he at least shots par or better and stays in the top 5. A win would really be great and possibly open the door to another major or two. Should be an interesting final round..........
