My Atonement For Doubting Tiger! 2019 Masters Tribute Illustration

Before the final round of the Masters, I boldly posted in my personal page an easy prediction that Tiger won't win the Masters. The gist of it was that Tiger has no history of coming from behind, and he has a bad record playing with Molinari. That post got a lot of heat and haters - probably close to 1000 comments - some getting angry, some funny, some getting personal, but most definitely disagreeing with me. Tiger made me eat crow and proved to the world what an all-time great he truly is! To sort of atone for ever doubting Tiger, but more importantly to celebrate Tiger's win, I decided to make a drawing of him. Some people have asked me to make prints of this but I will not since I have no permission or rights to the reference photos I used. Anyway I am sharing it. Here is also the description I wrote in my personal page. Hope you all like it!

Sharing my latest drawing and my thought process behind it. Here's my Tiger Woods tribute drawing from the 2019 Masters.

 

While the most memorable image may be Tiger in the 18th green, I've always believed that celebrating a win is just a consequence of the work and preparation done. Hence, I chose to put the "work" in the foreground and the "consequence" in the background.

 

I felt it was imperative to draw Tiger hitting an iron shot because to me he is the greatest iron player of all-time and put an iron masterclass in the final round. I chose this image from his approach to the first hole because to me the first hole should just be as important as the last. This also gives bookends to the drawing: first hole foreground, last hole background.

 

As a golf equipment junkie, I also wanted an image showing all of Tiger's gear because an indian can't hit a target with a crooked arrow. On full display in the image are Tiger's Nike Golf apparel (5th straight major won for Nike!), his TaylorMade Golf P7TW irons, the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Grip reverse logo'd, the True Temper shaft, and of course the Sunday red color.

 

To focus the viewer's eyes on the main image, I used charcoal over red india ink while adding a touch of white colored pencil highlights on the shirt to make it pop. I chose to do the celebratory background in light pencils. So all in all, this 11 x 17" image was done in four different media - first time I've ever done this.

 

This really started as a sort of a dare to offer a commission in the Facebook golf classifieds to see if someone will bite. I was surprised a few people actually did! I finally settled on a person to do this for, but I challenged myself by saying I won't accept anything upfront and only after I post it can he decide. I only agreed to do one image of my choosing, but decided to go the extra mile by doing two. If he doesn't want this, I don't mind keeping it for myself after all the days and hours spent doing this.

Wow! You still remember that post even if this forum deleted it. Let me just say Cameron's market share may have dropped since my fall of empire post a decade ago!
