Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

They said it’ll likely stay open for another 3-4 years. I’d get there this season because the maintenance tends to go down the toilet as a course gets closer to closing. And definitely walk it. It’s not an easy walk by any means but I’ve walked it every time I’ve played BR.

I'm playing 9 at good old Village Greens in Woodridge for Saturday. I bought one of their 2 year memberships, course isn't spectacular but for $200 I'll get plenty of free rounds out there. I gave in and bought myself a push cart, but I've really let my body conditioning go since I stopped playing hockey and not really sure I can walk 18 at this point. I look forward to building that back up and maybe walking more this year. I honestly am kind of hoping the no carts thing last a while to force myself to do it, although some of the courses around here seem to think that'll be relaxed mid-may.

Wilmette tomorrow morning. I'm expecting a soggy round.

Coyote Run on Monday morning at 10:15 am. Their online booking engine is not set up to take credit card info, so at this time they're taking tee times by phone only. There's an open spot at 10:15 if anyone wants to join me. CR has pretty good drainage, so I'm expecting decent conditions.

Harborside Starboard on Tuesday morning. 'Only the 2nd time I'll have walked the course.

Buffalo Grove has a single opening at 4:30 pm on Saturday, and numerous openings on Sunday. Sunset Valley has an opening for a single at 5:30 pm on Sunday. Oy. Weekend golf is going to be tough for the foreseeable future.

I pass 4 courses on my drive to work. Today I saw on three of the them, a police car parked roadside, which I thought was strange but maybe they are watching to see if the new two-some rule is being followed. Or I’m just paranoid.

... $20 to walk Naperbrook with a Brooks card. Not my favorite course but an easy walk for my first round in almost 6 months. Longest I have ever gone between rounds is 2.5 months so I expect to be rusty both physically and golf wise so Naperbrook 2 days in row should be a good start.

Wow. I feel human for the first time in months. Gorgeous day at Wilmette this morning. Temp was pushing 70 when I walked off the course. 'Never going to complain about a 2:45 round. Tee to green the course was in very good shape. It was actually better than I was expecting. There were a few wet spots, but no where near as sloppy as it has been in the past. The fairways were almost lush, well, for Wilmette. They always seem to have three or four different grasses in the fairways. Not sure if they'll ever sort it out. A few bunkers were ungroomed, but the vast majority were freshly raked, and looked great. It looks like a number of trees got trimmed, and a handful were removed. Before long the place is going to look like Sunset Valley.

Unfortunately the greens were a major letdown. They looked like they were aerated two weeks ago, and still hadn't healed. You'd think with all the downtime over the past two months they'd have knocked that out of the way. As such they were slow and bumpy. Bah.

The word for the day was "rusty". I last played March 10th, so there were some poor shots mixed in with a few highlights. I'm hoping to get four rounds in next week, so the game should be back on track shortly. It sure felt great to be out there walking. I noticed quite a few players failing to observe the 6 foot rule. As I made the turn there was a group of 7 or 8 players having a post round drink near the 18th. All were well within 6 feet of each other. Keep that sh-t up and they'll close the courses again in no time. Grrr.

Played my first Illinois round of the year at Calumet. I’d never played there before and was pleasantly surprised. There are some noisy holes near the freeway, but it didn’t bother me much. The starter was very friendly and they were observing the social distancing rules really well. Every twosome was spaced perfectly and it felt luxurious. Had a few really nice approaches and made a long birdie putt, but put up a pretty mediocre score (87).

The course: the rough was very tall in some places (overgrown? not sure if it was intentional) and there were a few puddles, but it played pretty well to me. The pins have a little bit of foam wrapped around the bottom so that you can still putt into the cup without the ball going all the way down. I much prefer that to the PVC raised cups where you can just blast it onto the plastic. Would definitely play again.

... I had a 1:45 tee time at Naperbrook and was shocked to see nobody on the course in front of me. I arrived at 1:35 and the starter said "You are good to go. You have a pard at 1:45 but he ain't here yet and nobody in front of you so you can go right now." I finally passed a dad and son on #12. They hit their tee shots and waited for me to putt out on #11 and waived me thru. When I was walking up 18 they were coming down #16 and nobody on their tail. I really thought it would be packed. Best shape I have ever seen Naperbrook's fairways but like Argonne found, they must have aerated in the last week?!? All that down time and they could have done it in March. At least they were small holes and didn't effect the roll too much. Playing there again tomorrow and I imagine on a Saturday it will be completely full. This is a picture of the fairway and I have never seen mowed rows like this at Naperbrook:

I know that here in Wisconsin we were suppose to have no carts at all to start and then courses were told they had to make carts available to anyone with a handicap sticker per the ADA. Now we have a one player per cart rule independent of physical ability.

If you need a grinder to make your weld look good, you are a grinder not a welder.

Played Blackstone today. The course was wet of course, but in good shape as always. There must have been a bunch of newcomers on the course because my playing partner had to direct multiple groups to the proper hole. Due to 15 minute tee times (you can’t start on the first hole until the group in front of you has moved to the second hole), there is virtually no waiting throughout your round. No reason for any rounds to be over 4 hours. I’m assuming most every course has enough carts for every player to have his or her own and not have to use them them multiple times throughout the day. You can sanitize them overnight, so just free the carts!

I went out tonight 15 min after the last tee time. Boy am I bad at golf. I was down to a 3 at 1 point last year and if someone saw me hitting driver tonight they may have thought it was my first time playing. I topped more drives than the last few years combined. I lost 15 pounds then added 10 of muscle during this lock down and I'm wondering if that messed with my swing, I have no idea. Seven bridges was in good shape, wet but not terrible it drained well.

Carts are allowed in Illinois with a medical note.
