New World Handicap System

Recommended Posts

As TP suggested ("So maybe the better view is that poorer players get more benefit from a Stableford format than better players do"), allowing someone to throw away strokes and still win is a clear advantage to the higher handicappers.

One doesn't have to be a M.I.T. graduate to realize that if one can throw away strokes and still win they have an advantage.

Not to mention that the stats on Pope of Slope about shooting exceptional scores clearly indicate that in net comps with a large percentage of high handicappers in the field (as would be common in any fair sized group ?) , a low handicapper is at a tremendous disadvantage. Now add to that it's a Stableford where, as Thinking Plus pointed out a high 'capper if far more likely to able to post a good score throwing away strokes whereas the low handicapper, if he needs to throw away a shot or 2 he's almost certainly out of the running.

I've played a lot of Stablefords in SE Asia. Who gets 40+ points regularly ? Correct. The HIGH handicappers. In roughly 160 rounds, playing off around a 4, I can count on one hand the number of times I made 40 points. A scratch player needs to shoot ~-4 to score 40. Good luck with that.

Statistically relevant ? Once a month they had a "Monthly Medal". It was a net game, period. I'm guessing if the stats were kept, the proportion of low 'caps winning the Monthly Medal was at least 3 times that of those same low 'caps winning the Stablefords.

yep it’s is max double bogey. But not net. And it’s a blind draw pairing A and B players. Plus a payout for medalist. And a closest to the pin on a par 3 ... So the B player gets paired with an A and The overall winner gets 1/4 of the pot. Win the team and medalist and closest to pin and you walk out with some spending money. It’s by far the best way I’ve seen to involve everyone. It gets the most participation as far as club members go.

Points continue week to week for the whole year. I had to get 37 last week.

Nope. Not better ball.

just points combined. Say I’m plus 4 for the day and my blind draw is -2. Were +2 as a team. I usually am not even in same group as my partner.

The USGA and other stats actually show that over time, the winners in net medal competitions win in direct proportion to the number of entrants in specific categories.

ie

If 5% of the field are <5 then 5% of the comps will be won by a <5 capper

If 30% of the field are 12 - 20 then 30% of the comps will be won by a 12 - 20 capperQuote from the report •      When the distribution of winners by handicap category is related to their representation in the field, all handicap categories win in reasonable proportion to their entry i.e. Category 1 and Category 3 players typically comprise 8% and 40% of club competitions and in a ‘single class’ competition win 10% and 38% of the time.

Sorry, I can't now. The full report used to be on the CONGU website under a section 'Myths & Misconceptions' but it wasn't included when they rebuilt it a few years ago.

I am only able to copy and paste from the pages I have in pdf form. A lot of it is graphs, bar charts and tables that lose their format when cutting and pasting.

Talked to WA Golf (Washington Golf) handicap department. They said the national GHIN site will be down starting on January 1st. Up again on January 6th with the new WHS. Assuming this affects every state or region in the US, that uses GHIN.

Also clarified that in Washington all existing "T" scores will become "C" scores. C scores will become N's. (USGA previously told me that score designation is up to each authorized golf association (AGA).)

Not that long ago there were several states (including the Carolina's) that did not use Ghin. The Carolina's converted to Ghin several years ago - have all the other states done that as well?

I seem to recall that one state actually had 2 systems depending on which part of the state that you lived in, but can't recall the details.

This year's adjustment for competing from different tees has basically been addressed in next year's CR-Par add on to your playing handicap. Last year you made an adjustment by subtracting the two tees' ratings, next year if the par is the same from both tees then that same rating distinction is sort of included in your handicap.

So your tying these two things together conceptually is justified.

Thanks for posting, That answers one of my questions from earlier in this thread. My home state of Minnesota announced in our last our last emailed revision (12/1) that January 6 is the day as well. I hope they bring it all in including hole-by-hole posting option and stats.

Looking at my record: HI is currently 0.5. Best 8 of 20 will be 0.26 = 0.3

A good friend plays a lot of golf (93 rounds this year) and can be erratic:

Current HI = 17.3 (highest all year)

Low Index (7/15) = 12.9

Low differential = 8.9 (HI was 14.0 at the time)

New best 8 of 20 = 17.4 (due to no multiplier in the formula)

He could get clipped right away because of HI increase, correct?

EDIT: would he end up around 16.7?

12.9 + 3 + half of the increase (?)

This is a question I'll ask when I attend a seminar on Tuesday, will the soft and hard caps be applied retroactively? But his hard cap would be 5 over his low, so he could go as high as 17.9. The soft cap would kick in at 15.9, so maybe he'd end up at 16 to 17 or so, if it IS applied retroactively. There's no way he'd be as low as 13.7, as I understand the way it will work.

Please let us know what you find out. (And I made a mistake in my calculations and corrected it before you posted.)
