"Players" iron with larger head size and wider sole

What Players type iron has a larger head size and the widest sole?

As I've made dozens of changes to my bag over the last two decades, I've come to the realization that I prefer the low offset of a players iron, and the wider sole of a game improvement iron. I also like a head size that is a bit bigger than the standard players iron size.

Does this head exist? Anyone have suggestions??

As a reference, I bagged the 2014 TaylorMade Tour-Preferred irons for a minute. That head was a perfect blend of size and low offset. Very accurate also.

I would like a newer club head with latest technology.

Some will disagree, but I like the Titleist T-MBs.

Minimal offset and a slightly larger head - yet retain a relatively thin top line.

Ive been a long time blade player but decided to give these a go after trying a number of irons. So far I’m happy with them - the notable difference for me is how much straighter my shots are vs. blades. Ball flight is also higher on average - which I didn’t really need help with - but it’s nice to see the mid irons stop on a dime after falling out of the sky like a meteor and freeze where they land.

Callway xr pro. They split time in the bag with a set of snake eyes 600 blades and it's a easy transition. The xr pro has just the right amount of offset and top line is not to thick and the sole is just a hair wider . Alot of forgiveness in a head that suits better players eyes.

You do realize that those 2 attributes you most like basically disqualify that iron head from being considered a "player's" iron, right ?

Larger heads (therefore usually considerably more perimeter weighting/forgiveness) and wider soles (further back COG, thereby adding more forgiveness) are the main descriptors in GI and SGI irons.

The Mizuno 919 forged was a bit bigger head than the Srixon Z785.

Those might be a good option. I remember thinking they were quite forgiving for a forged "players" club

I was thinking the same thing. Or the Bridgestone CB. Both Srixon and Bridgestone Forged CB have always had a midsized head and a little more width in the sole.

You're describing a player's distance iron. Something like P790, Z585, 919 Forged/HMB, Forged Tec, Apex, C300 Forged, or T200 is basically right up your alley. Offset is smaller than a GI iron but they have the ball speed tech, face size, sole width, and forgiveness of such a club.

Came very close to buying them but went full SGI. I think they got lost in the shuffle a bit because Mizuno had 3 offerings in the 919 family and the forged probably wasn't the best looking Mizuno head ever

Agree. I think if they had done more simple badging without the shiny bit the look might have been better. I don't love the wide sole low bounce combo but I could not believe how accurate they were. Hit them with C Tapers and the things were lasers. Great crisp feel and ultra forgiving.

Everyone will define it a little differently, but the Bridgestone J15CB would be the best example I’d list, with Srixon 700 series next. Also: The Yonex CB-501 is a very nice, soft Japanese-forged iron with a wider sole than their other players irons. It is one of those clubs that would sell like crazy if it said Mizuno on it

Moving to the edge of the category, you might look at the Wilson C300 Forged and its replacement, the D7 Forged, which has very low offset (and yes, Wilson acknowledges that despite the letter classification, the D7 Forged is a new iteration of the C300 Forged.) Personally I’d also put the TaylorMade P770 in there. Depends on the look you like.

In addition to those already mentioned, take a look at Maltby. TE/DMB forged if you want more traditional lofts, or TS2 for a distance iron.

... I will never understand why Cleveland abandoned their 588 series. The 588TT's are pretty much exactly what the OP describes. Crazy forgiving for a Players Iron, wider sole with some trailing relief and a larger forged head.
