Is it possible for NBC to play MORE commercials?

Ad rates are down on broadcast tv. So, they have to run more ads to fund covering the event you're watching for free.

(I know, it doesn't make it any less annoying, but it's the price of admission. You could choose not to watch.)

Felt like they showed way more actual golf shots than CBS did last week. It was tolerable to watch which I can’t say for the CBS coverage.

It's bad. However wait until 2022 when the new and more expensive television rights deals kick in. It will make the current telecasts look like a PBS show in comparison.

Just wait for the new contract with the Tour to kick in. The increase in rights fees will have to come from somewhere.

At the same time, quite a good number of sporting events are also streamed online. In golf, many events are available for online streaming (for free and without registration) from non-American channels which have a way more tolerable golf to ads ratio. Currently the online streamers depend on pop-up ads but given that they can be easily blocked, they are also innovating new ways of covering the costs. Sooner or later someone will come up with a mechanism that will deliver a fatal blow to the old fashioned subscription TV.

Its not just the sheer number of commercials, it is the fact that on Sunday I have to watch the leaders hit critical shots on the back 9 on mute on half my screen while more commercials are blaring. The commentary by Zinger was equally frustrating (do we really need to hear the same comments about "the scientist" every time he lines up a putt?). I'm not sure I'll be able to watch much more of this...

I don't know for how many I speak for - the majority of guys at our club no longer watch "prime time" golf (NBC, CBS, FOX) because of the amount of commercials and quality of commentary (lack thereof). A lot of us that still have cable watch the European Tour coverage - fewer commercials and fewer/better announcers. Funny how Euro coverage can be done with two announcers and US requires twelve.....

Up in Canada it's more unbearable as our local station gets to cut into the US station's feed and show the same six commercials over the 4 hour broadcast. Aside from majors I haven't watch a 'full day' of golf in a few seasons now.

This is what DVR is for. Either box or cloud service.

On YouTube TV, I tap "ff 15 sec" 12 times and usually end up in just about the right spot. Sometimes I have to back up, sometimes a couple more taps... but it's better than watching the commercials. I'm sure it's a matter of time before they disable this feature. I know Hulu Live TV didn't let me do that. Which is why I switched.

If you're close enough to the US border, you can use an antenna to get the American network directly without any interruptions by CTV2 or CHCH or Global... some antennas are rated to get stations 100 miles away. If you're higher up in say a Toronto condo or building, you can use a small indoor one to even get Buffalo!

An antenna results in less compression and a better picture quality, as there's one less middleman in that the signal is not going through a cable or satellite provider. Plus there are no monthly fees.

Generally...

Cable / Satellite: 10 Mbps

Antenna: 19 Mbps

Backhaul feed on C-band or Ku-band: 35 Mbps!

In its relatively brief history, that tournament site always seems to produce quality golf and memorable finishes. I like it the best of the four WGC tournaments.

I DVR all PGA events on Youtube TV on AppleTV(4k). Living in the Pacific Time Zone is the sweet spot. The Apple TV remote makes skipping ahead super easy with thumbnail preview. Living in PST means most events are done airing by the time I get home from playing 18 in the mid afternoon. I just head right to my car from the golf course to avoid hearing any spoilers. The Masters and a few other events are the only ones I'll watch live. I do the same for just about all sports these days.

You want fewer commercials, watch soccer. The lack of commercials is one of the reasons I watch. It can be dull, but the same can be said about every sport.

Dan Hicks bothers me more than the ads, so I have to both DVR and mute the broadcasts on NBC!

NBC is not, as they say, better than most.

I would maybe pay $400 a year for commercial free coverage of all tour events. Just the time savings alone would be worth it. And ads make my blood pressure go up. I wonder what viewers would have to pay to match what the entities that profit off the ads currently make.
