10 Handicap and Up...What irons do you use? Blades, CBs, GIs?

And.........They're still Playing & Enjoying the game. I think for most WRXers, and the many amongst that golfing majority whom aren't on here, having so many "personal" choices one can make to get around a golf course is unique in its allure to participate.

With that, 80 was my lowest score, but stellar irons or dreaded shanks are not the it factor in my own game. Maybe for most on this thread. Could be putting or chipping - Driving in fairways or into houses.......

Since I have enjoyed hundreds of powerful ball striking days on the range from 2008 onwards with irons, I went apesh*t and started trying and loving various MB forged sets. None of those in sig now due to a massive inventory unloading for elbow/shoulder issues with steel shafts.

I never played varsity or even JV sports as a youth, and I really wanted to, so I now either compete with those I am paired with or myself and it is a living hell for my golf game - Only On the Frickin' Course!

That's why I still choose irons that seemingly are beyond my score level even with the P760 and soon to have T100. They perform excellent on the range, as does the driver, chips, etc....all those on a course are like occasionally effective clubs I should keep or not - oh Well. Great thread.

But I'm not competing against the pros Ness. In fact, the only thing I compete against is the course I'm playing. Here's the way I look at it. I've spent over 30 years chasing a better game through practice and spending a boat load of money on equipment. The only thing that makes me play better golf is playing more golf. The 410's I played last year were the most forgiving set of irons I think Ping has ever made but they didn't fix a bad swing. I still hit a fat shot now and then. I still hit one thin that went 20 yards over the green. I still hit some in a bunker or some water. Scores just aren't that important to me anymore. Golf for me is all about enjoying myself . Who knows? Next season I might enjoy myself with a set of G710's

probably some one already said this but it depends. Are you a good ball striker with a mediocre short game? Or a mediocre ball striker but an excellent short game? Good ball striker can play a PI or a DPI. Mediocre ball striker a GI or a SGI.

This is my mindset after playing golf for over 30 years. I am now almost 50 and I have a completely new bag full of clubs, except my trusty Scotty. I used to chase scores or lower handicaps, but now I chase a great experience out on a beautiful golf course. Yes, I will play a lot this year, probably more than I have in the last 5, but it will be to have fun and not be pissed because I shot a 90. So, to the point of this thread, I gave up my Callaway Razr X Musclebacks this year for the Cobra King Forged Tec irons. I need a bit more forgiveness and these definitely give me that. As my swing speeds slow down, the Razr X’s didn’t give me enough distance even with regular shafts. I will do a review and comparison over the next couple months after it warms up consistently here in the Midwest, but so far I am loving the new irons and woods I have from Cobra. Now I need to find a new driver...lol

MP18 MMC. Offset and lots of bounce causes me issues. These are the most forgiving and best feeling irons I could find that don’t have a lot of bounce. Srixon 7 series would be another favorite.

16-18 but trending down.

Play Srixon combo. 585 from 4 to 7 and 785 from 8 to PW. I could easily play the 785 up to 6i just with how well i hit them.

I wouldn't mind playing mostly CB irons one day.

I'm a solid 11 and have been playing the p770 irons for the last two seasons, I plan to switch to p790s, but an MRI shows a part UK al rotator cuff tear and labrum tear in the left shoulder. I can't take the club back any higher than below the shoulder so not sure what I'm going to do.

My al th ornate swing looks like Matt Wolfe, if I take up in front of me and get it down below the shoulder before i completely turn, I can swing and get some clubhead speed. Can't hit balls yet, still winter here in northern lower Michigan

Hey brother;

Take care of that rotator - lots of issues in there if they have to cut you. Hope your irons game is open to graphite shafts. I had gone into graphite shafts on temporary runs and as part of a rotation on the range especially with other steel shafted sets b4 just for elbow issues.

Now at 56, despite being in above average shape from a dedicated fitness routine, I began feeling alot of aches in my shoulder sockets, mainly around the golfing part of my week. I've gone full time into graphite just recently, which is starting to payoff in relief of that pain just 1-2 weeks off the steel.

I game blades, which is going to be an outlier as I can see from previous comments. I've gamed other clubs like AP2, and GI clubs but I just don't like the GI clubs and how they sit behind the ball as well as the turf interaction/offset. At the end of the day, it all depends on what suits you for launch, spin, offset, distance etc.

But seeing your description would make sense for some P790s with graphite shafts. Not too GI look but still easy on the joints!

One thing to note. If you’re a good ball striker, get the irons which look and feel best and inspire confidence for you. I’ve gamed from SGI to the current players Z785 and my scores relatively stay the same due to the need to keep the ball in play off the tee and my short game. All I look for is am I confident standing over a 4 or 5 iron to be by the green if there is water short. If that answer is yes, I am good with those irons.

I played GBB x12s for almost 15 years and I was always an ok golfer, 15-18 hcp. But last year finally decided to update my bag and went with more of a players iron in the AP2s. Most would probably say I bought those before my game was ready but I feel like it had the opposite effect. I would have stayed ok hitting ok shots with my ok swing using the SGI style irons, but moving to the AP2s has kind of pushed me to actually fix some swing flaws and try to improve. Last year I finished at a 10.4hcp and this year I'm trying for a 5hcp and good iron play is definitely a key to getting and staying there.

What graphite shafts did you settle on? I have thought about them, but never hit any. I need heavier shafts, so at least 110g to not lose the head in the backswing.

I'm at about an 11.5 right now and play the Srixon 565's from 5 to gap wedge. I was playing a set of Mizuno JPX 850 Forged prior to these ones, which I think are slightly less forgiving (maybe?). I think both would be considered game improvement or player's distance or whatever. Definitely cavity backs, but not massively so. Iron play is probably the strongest part of my game and I could probably be fine with something a little more demanding, but I see no real need for it.

When I first started getting back into golf 5-6 years ago, my first purchase was a set of TaylorMade M2's, which are I think the very definition of super game improvement. I really did not like them. I believe I was actually better with my teenage set of knockoff Pings from the 90's than I was with the M2's. I'm pretty sure it was the turf interaction or something, but I could hit the M2's in a mile in every direction. Emphasis on EVERY direction.

I’m a 19 index. Breaking 90 is a good round for me. Mostly scoring low 90’s.

4-5 MP-15 C-Taper Lite Stiff

6-P MP-33 S300

Planning on going to MP-20s this year.

3-4 HMB

5-7 MMC

8-P MB

Hitting the 33’s great at the moment and they are gorgeous, but wrong shaft flex and too short for me, hence the plans to switch.
