PGA Championship may move due to coronavirus

The PGA may not hold the final say in this though. Cities and counties are beginning to ban large gatherings, the rumor is Seattle told the Mariners to find somewhere else to play to open the season. The Warriors-Nets game tomorrow night will have no fans due to the ban on large gatherings. If this continues until the PGA, the PGA may have to choose between the venue and attendance.

Let's just cancel life.

My god, the overreaction to this garbage by the media in the pursuit of viewers and clicks is sickening. Its a respiratory virus being treated like the black plague. Like every time we walk outside we're daring the grim reaper to come take us.

I long for someone to just come forward and saying, "We're not changing anything. We're not afraid of a virus. If people don't want to come, so be it. We welcome one and all." But no...we're now playing sporting events without fans and cancelling public events, as if that's going to be the thing that is going to "stop" a virus.

The way of thinking should be finding out how to treat the sick the best...not "containing" a respiratory virus, which has proven to be impossible in the history of mankind. The virus simply has to run its course. Its not a coincidence that the vast majority of the cases of this virus are in the northern hemisphere, where it's winter. The slowdown in respiratory viruses will come as the weather warms up, just like every year.

Use common sense, for crying out loud. Please.

You're comparing this to the start of WW2? Alrighty then...

Respiratory viruses have been around since the beginning of time, my friend.

Breaking news: there will probably be a new strand or different kind of respiratory virus next winter that doctors or scientists haven't seen before. Might as well prepare now and tell people to just stay in their homes from Thanksgiving through Memorial Day, and cancel all public events during that time as well.

Its not even just "soft". Its flat-out stupid. People are letting a respiratory virus control their lives and wreck their freedom. A respiratory virus where 10,000 people in a nation of 350 million are documented to have it. Its beyond absurd.

If you're sick, by all means stay home. But this idea that doing this sort of stuff (cancelling events, etc) is going to somehow curtail how a respiratory virus weaves its way through society is silly. All these places and entities are doing are destroying their local economies.

I think everyone who isn't taking this disease seriously is extremely arrogant. Am I going to die from the disease? Probably not, Im in my mid 20's with a healthy immune system. Is there a possibility that I could give it to someone who will? Without question. The other catch 22 is that we're not quite sure how to treat the disease yet, not to mention the fact that its spreading like a fucking wildfire. It's not just about me me me, its about our communities as a whole and I for one believe this is a real threat to them.

You can’t treat a Virus. That’s why there are 34 million cases In the US this year and around 20,000 deaths of the of the flu. They will work on a preventive vaccine. People will still not get it like they don’t get a flu shot. Viruses will always be around but we aren’t going to have millions dead on the street.

Your numbers are a snapshot. If measures aren't taken to contain it, way more than 10k will have it. It will spread across the globe to everyone like a wild fire. Currently mortality rate is estimated around 3%, at least 5x-10x seasonal influenza. It will crush our medical system. Experts don't believe that summer weather will curtail this virus which makes it very different and a significantly greater threat than influenza. It attacks the body in ways that aren't yet fully understood. It has made some very healthy people gravely I'll, probably some dead.

An international event like a PGA major would be a breeding ground to further propagate the global pandemic. Its only right that organizers are looking at options. It's not stupid as you say, it's called being responsible.

OH... In before the lock.

Still having to navigate suspect reported infections v tested, as well as tests available to administer. As usual we should proceed with caution and allow this to develop until we have solid numbers. And leave the epidemiology to the epidemiologists. PGA golf (sports in general "aka distractions") should be the very least of concerns if this is as serious as some lead on.

Very well said. If you are 25, to be arrogant about it and go spread it around because you just don't care....well the hospital in your city does not have enough hospital beds and IVs to treat everyone over 60. This is what is going on in Italy right now where they have to choose which seniors get to get treated and which don't . Many will die without even an attempt at treatment because the hospitals don't have the capacity. The 30yr olds that may spread the disease to them because you just gotta live life , well, it's unfortunate if you think that way

Joe Rogan had an expert on today named Dr Michael Osterholm who has written books on infectious disease, and their model predicts in the next 3-7 months there will be close to 100 million global cases with 480,000 fatalities, and this will be 15x worse than a normal flu season.

Is this the worst thing that ever happens to us, probably not and i certainly hope it is i guess because it could be worse. But cancelling sporting events or at least doing them without fans...is the ONLY rational thing to do. At the very worst it slows down the transmission rate which if spread out enough, allows enough seniors to get treated in hospitals. An "outbreak" is way worse because it overwhelms the hospital systems.

Most sporting events will likely be played without fans very shortly, and probably for the next 3-6 months
