SIM driver guys - talk about it

Recommended Posts

My SIM showed up yesterday while I was driving to the range, so I only got to test it on a simulator at Golf Galaxy. Ball speed is right where my M3 is at, which is what I expected, but it seemed more stable on mishits. I have a 10g weight that’s showing up on Monday for it, so for the time being, I have a bunch of lead tape on the toe to get the SW up to around D5. I moved the standard weight towards the heal to make up for the weight on the toe. I’m using my Rogue Sliver 60s from my M3. I’m getting my first round with it this afternoon. Course doesn’t have a range, so I’ll be flying by the seat of my pants for a bit, lol.

Would the lack of tipping to offset the head weight gain increase spin numbers?

In vaccum, slightly (a couple hundred RPM maybe). In reality, the difference in spin could easily be overridden by a change in strike location by literal millimeters. A heavier head will exert a little more force on the shaft though, and the bigger concern is whether or not that is something you can feel and if it does anything to your timing.

Toying with the idea to get a shorter shaft. Maybe 1 inch shorter would not be to extreme. Could I use a heavier shaft to keep the swing weight? I don´t want it any less or is it better to use lead tape and get extra weight on the head? If so may try a bit more in the heel area to see if I can get some more draw bias from it.

Big fan of the Sim driver but not enough to get me out of my trust M6. Tried a bunch of combinations and only got the Sim Max to equally good to my current M6. Regular Sim had a solid 10 yards better but, wasn't worth the price and my dispersion was definitely more wild. Here is what I like most though, playing with people who use the Sim. The sound is on point.

Still enjoying my Max, although my next range session is going to be an experiment to see if the upright neutral setting works well for me. I tried it briefly with M5 last year and had some pretty good results. I know driver lie angle isn't as critical as irons/wedges, but at 44" my standard lie has got to be playing somewhat flatter than that.

Loving my honeymoon with my standard SIM.

10.5 cranked all the way down with a hzrdus yellow.

I am actually surprised at how forgiving this club is off the toe. I hit some terrible balls that just go forever. Although the head is more shallow than my old gamer this thing is a monster and has enough forgiveness for me.

I loved my G400 max and how easy it was to use but always struggled flighting it down and playing in the wind. With the Sim I havent had any worries there.

I have a slightly off topic question but I don't think it warrants a new thread.

I'm coming from a Taylormade R9, and I've been pretty ignorant to basically any new clubs or tech since I bought it new. The SIM and Mavrik are both high on my list but does the choice itself really matter since I'm coming from 11 year old hardware?

I did a fitting with both and I kind of felt the same and it seemed to basically come down to making sure I have an X-stiff shaft, which made me think that I couldn't tell any minute differences between the two since the technology gap is so high from the R9. Has anyone else had this come up?

Having played both I would say there are a lot of differences between the two. I found the Mavrik marginally longer, but the SIM much more consistent. Get the SIM dialed in and it gives up no distance to the Mavrik. Hit every ball in the same spot and it may not make a difference. For my toe side miss I find the Twist Face on the SIM to actually help quite a bit with the toe hook.

I haven't played a TM driver in years, its been all Ping and Callaway or me. But I love the consistency and confidence I've got with the SIM

I second the Twist Face commentary w/ the toe-y hits. I did an outdoor fitting last week and my bad swing/miss is poor toe hit that starts out right and swing left across the entire fairway. I didn't know specifically what aspects of the SIM driver was helping me out until the fitter (who knows my misses well) said it's probably the Twist Face technology which was benefiting my poor swings. Waiting for the club to arrive...it's killing me.

I hit the Callaway Mavrik a few times, different shafts and heads. The head just too light for me, I prefer a heavier head. Finally settle down with Sim 10.5 head, 1 click open with Raijin stiff and bought a heavier front weight to add more mass to the head, it is so much better now. Straight and long, power fade when I want to. The strange thing about this driver FOR ME, is when I put the slider weight towards the heel, the driver feel terrible, It feels awesome when I put the weight slightly towards the toe.

Really wanted to like this club, but the face is just too shallow for me, had the same feeling on the M5/6. Hoping they come out with a deeper faced version!

It definitely was an adjustment with such a shallow face. My old driver was way deeper. I felt I barely had to tee the SIM up to crunch it.

It made me clue in that my miss is definitely not high/low on the face but more toe side After a bit of time adjusting to the driver its been great for me. Love the look/sound/feel.

I had 7 out of town rounds over a week of holidays and always find that to be a nice test off the tee. I was crushing this thing at an away course with full confidence. That was a nice change. My old just spun too much for me.

Upgraded my M4 to SIM Max, kept the shaft, very nice feel and improved distance and consistency. Only one round so far but a worthy upgrade to my M4 which I played for 2 seasons.

Complete opposite for me. I've never been this inconsistent of the tee which has led to zero confidence. I FIGHT the fade/slice with this thing no matter what setting I try. I grab my old driver and it's nice straight flight, to a slight draw.

Nowhere near the distance I got with the sim when I did hit a good one tho. It's the longest driver I have ever hit.. just usually longer into the bushes.

I'm in the process of dumping it to get back into the Callaway train. Just between the standard Mavrik or EFSV

All the inconsistencies I saw in the beginning were in shots that I would say were well struck. I couldn't hit the same launch window until I took care of the shaft- as soon as I got that into what works for me its been money. Before that i was all over the place with launch and spin and found it really sensitive to tee height

The ball still turns over on a toe hit, just not as severely as I experience with the Mavrik or G410 series FOR ME. Any contact heel side of the CG will contribute to a fade spin and toe side would contribute to a hook spin. As you mention, the issues sound like their face angle and path related

First few rounds with a 10.5* Sim went well with a Fuji Pro 2.0 Tour Spec shaft. I did notice a higher launch than expected, even when turned down to 8.5*. For the sake of tinkering I’m going to put a Smoke Green shaft in that’ll play a little shy of 45”. I just picked up a 13.5 gram sliding weight from the Taylormade site. Curious if anybody has thrown one of those in and if I should expect any surprises such as reduced launch or spin from the added front weight?

Something to note - If you oder directly from TM and cut the shaft down significantly (I play 44.5) they will automatically change the rear weight from 12g to 18g for SW purposes (stock SIM SW is D6 with HZRDUS shaft). For me the SW and head of the driver felt funny and my timing was off (losing everything right). I found the removing the sliding weight (10g) entirely and adding 4 grams of lead tape to the toe (I like to feel the toe position) synced my swing. My SIM setup is 44.5" HZRDUS Smoke Black 70g X - 18g rear wight - no sliding weight - 4g lead tape on the toe (SW likely around D1).
