Your go-to thing to say when someone you're playing with hits a bad shot

I am always a target when I hit something ugly so I don't hold back when the shoe is on the other foot.

My normal groups/game we all know each other well and we all talk.

One guy is a shorter hitter and if he messes up a tee shot short I like to go by the ball and go, "man not even sure I can reach from here"

Best one I heard in the group none the less from the lady was I left a birdie putt short and she asks" that one get got up in your meat curtains?" I hadn't laughed that hard in a long time.

Im usually very nice...either I say nothing, or something like “we’ve all been there” or “at least you can find it “ stuff like that.

If I know the guy better, though, the wisecracks come out. “It’s deep, and I don’t think it’s playable”. Stuff like that.

One of my go tos, when a guy leaves a short putt short is “Nice lag”. That usually draws some interesting reactions ?

That's when you say, "You're just playing social golf"

If with regular playing partners, comments are based on the relationship.

 

If paired with a stranger, then I wouldn't say anything, unless they wanted info on where the ball went.

If the ball is not headed for a hazard, "catch a lie". OB or water, "bite". Frequently, "did anybody see that?"

by the shot, then its "Fore'.

"Ope." Or "Laying up, smart move." or "Sail." Only with my usual group, if it is with randoms I don't say much unless they do.

If I don’t know them and just got paired up on the first hole, I don’t say anything, at first. There’s always that “feeling out” process that takes a couple holes before I go for the genitals.

When your competitor misses a short, meaningful putt or hits it OB, just say, “ I hate it when I do that ”. When they compliment you by saying good shot, say “ I Know”.

My home course, we tend to borrow the other fairways because its safe over there and is a good angle. Most of the time its on purpose.

I have a buddy, with whom I can say a number of things without fear of lasting damage. In one case we were playing a hole with OB down the right side with a fence. Well he steps up and unloads a high push-slice in that direction and I started 'Swing and a long drive to right! This ball is going, if it stays fair, it! IS! GAWWWWWNNNN! A home run for big Matt and the right to hit again lying 2 from the tee!" Same thing for high pop ups off the crown.

 

The other thing, if someone hits a bad shot in the right direction with good speed, I've been known to say 'Ow!' as well.

Just a couple of things you’d hear at my club.

Hitting one into the thick rough “There’s some great grass over there”

After slicing a drive it’s usually “Paging Dr. Wayright.”

Blading one over the green is typically followed by “Touch ‘em all.”

Leaving a birdie putt shot gets you a “Way to cozy it up there for par.”
