It's not nonsense at all.  I've been watching top level amateurs and pros for the last decade.  It's all bomb and gouge.  15% rollback of the ball would be a good start.

It benefits golf as a whole.  No need to water and fertilize 7,600 yard courses.  Shorter courses take less time and cost less money.  It's a no brainer.

Any rollback would be relatively minimal and be focused more on slowing further expansion, not drastically reducing the existing footprint/maintenance costs (if that were the real focus, they would be attempting to scale back to gutty era course lengths, not that of the wound era which experienced the most drastic length increases on average).
 

Also, money is not really a problem for the relatively small number of courses that have this perceived problem.

Big deal. I've attended PGA tournaments for over 50 years and it's ridiculous to create some stupid story arc because length is an advantage. It always has been. I'd say Winged Foot has presented exceptionally this week. And it may well be that the only one under par is Bryson, who has played fabulous golf for 4 rounds. You chicken little guys are really annoying.
