Srixon ZX4 Irons - what the heck?

kiwihacker

Recommended Posts

Just as I'm salivating over the new ZX5 and ZX7 series and wondering where to split a combo set Srixon come up with another model the ZX4? This one is a hollow iron and looks to be a stronger lofted 'distance' variant ( although I thought that is what the ZX5 is TBH).

Look nice for a forgiving GI iron but I think I'll stick with the 5/7 series.

Very true.

Mark Crossfield has just reviewed them, he is getting insane distance for him (yeah, we all know, lower loft and spin for the club #), one of his more interesting reviews I think:

Here are two of the viewer comments:

"The blending powers of srixon combo sets is mad now"

"This is so true. For non hybrid players they now can go 4-5 in the ZX4, 6-7 in the ZX5 and 8-P in the ZX7 and have a smooth bag throughout. I hope the rest of the golfing word starts to give them their deserved credit."

This presents so many combo possibilities and you also have the UI's. I wonder how a ZX4 4I would compare against a Srixon UI?

I love my Srixons and they keep adding possibilities.....

Yeah I watched that review too. Crossfield was hitting that 5 iron great and was getting great distance out of it. Be interesting to see him hit the 23° ZX4 5 iron alongside the 24° ZX5 5 iron and see how the distance and spin numbers compare.

Thing about Crossfield though he doesn't even bag a normal 6 iron. His longest iron is the 31° 7 iron then he goes to a Cleveland Hibore hybrid type of 6 iron then a 22° hybrid.

Interesting that a prominent teaching pros longest iron is a 7 iron whereas most of us amateurs are still bagging 4-5 irons.

I will look at it for a 4 iron.  I am seriously leaning towards a zx5 and zx7 split set, trying to decide on where to split.  I am thinking the ZX4 will be a great iron for height (Low ball hitter) more so than the utilities are.

Interesting....

I think for me it's starting with yardage, then figuring out what the fill the gap with.  I have a ton of confidence with my 6-iron (28170 club) and hybrid (200 yard club).   I have a lot less confidence with my 5-iron.  Theoretically if a ZX4 gave me the confidence of the other 2 clubs and a 185 yard distance, it would be perfect.  Loftwise the ZX4 blends right between the 2. (slightly strong)

My home course has a tough 18th hole.   You often end up in a distance that calls for a 5 iron with water left and right.  It's always a white knuckle ride for me.

I play a course with a hole like that too, about the 7th. White knuckle time alright especially into the prevailing westerly. 🙈

I just demo’d the ZX4 with PXLZ 5.5 shaft. I ordered a set, I’m coming off the Z585’s, and the zx4’s are really nice club. Basically they are the bladed version of the HB launcher irons, I really wish had not hit, I haven’t hit an iron that well in awhile. Thanks that they are satin finish, not chrome and satin. Love look, they remind me of a ping iron, great height and distance, turf interaction perfect.

Remember that Srixon and Cleveland are separate product lines in one of the golf divisions of SRI Sports Ltd. (Upscale XXIO is the other)

The arrival of the Srixon ZX4 irons represent the upgraded return of Z355 irons from circa 2015. The Z355 irons bridged the Z*45 and early Z*65 cycles, and then disappeared.

The Z355 and ZX4 represent user-friendly irons that blur the GI-SGI lines.

image.png.ee30730950411e1c08f89526961cfd77.png In between the two came Cleveland's 2017 reentry into making golf irons with its Launcher line.

At the time I talked to a  merchandiser and fitter for a local golf shop. He noted that several golfer who came in for fittings were set on TaylorMade or Callaway irons. But, after testing several chose Launcher CBX or HB instead.

That brings to the before club the Z355 and the after club, the ZX4. The two bear similar descriptions from company website and outside reviewers.

image.png.6bc65b19ce310439bcc83234c9b102b4.png

In general, the Z355 tried to bridge the GI-SGI market. I hit the Z355 on several occasions, and it had a feel much like the base Callaway X20. Both flew OK but not much feel.

Now I have not yet touched a ZX4, much less hit it. From its description and early reviews, it appears to be an attempt at an "all players" iron.

So true. Lots of PGA pros go up to 5 iron, then switch to some kind of help in the 4 iron.
I see a lot of amateurs doing the same, but they don’t realize that their lofts are jacked in comparison to pros. Most modern sets 6i would be same loft as pros 5i, so we shouldn’t be against 6i being our longest iron...or 7i like Crossfield.

Well Crossfield's ZX5 7 iron is 31° which is my 6 iron. I still feel like I can play a 27° club no problem but the 24° iron is my tipping point. Trouble is I hit the hybrid replacement further and I'm not skillful enough to play the variety of shots/distances that Crossfield does with his 22/23° 'rinkie'. Lol

Got a set of ZX7 5-Pw on the way. Wondering if I can bend ZX4 since they are not a forged body.

Have thoughts of hot melting a ZX4 5 iron and install a 4 iron shaft and use it as my driving iron.

I have a feeling this would be more forgiving and higher launching that the utility with that tungsten weight on toe side. It even has the VT sole which the utility does not. Not sure if VT sole is a good thing on a long iron tho...

Anyone tried bending these yet?

🤔🤔🤔

I viewed the ZX4 in person recently. The long and mid irons have too much junk in the trunk in my opinion but I don’t doubt that they will perform.

The ZX5 is gorgeous but I don’t know if I’m good enough for them.

Gonna be an interesting fitting. Fortunately lots of great options.

I agree with you on the look but they do perform.  I didn’t play much at all in 2020 (1 round) so this year I decided I was going to play more and a buddy of mine called me last week to invite me to play.  I didn’t have irons so I just used my wife’s big berthas from 2006/2007 with uniflex shafts.  I had a great ball striking rounds. So I pulled the trigger on the zx4 5-p and 47/50/53(54)/58 scratch wedges.  At my age (50) I’d rather enjoy the game regardless of what clubs I’m hitting that try and keep playing clubs that are beyond me.

Just got my zx4 4&5 irons yesterday. I ordered then 3 degrees upright and 1 degree weak, srixon messaged me saying max they'll go is 2 degrees any direction.  I'm sure I could squeeze another degree out of them though, I will try this week and let ya know.

I was able to bend the 5 iron 3 degrees. Definitely not as easy as the zx5s and zx7s but If you know what you're doing you can get 3 out of them. Unfortunately the 4 iron head I never tried adjusting because the epoxy failed so it twists a tiny bit so I'll have to contact customer service and get it fixed. Haven't even hit it yet just did a few practice swings in the air with it and noticed a little clicking sound, after examining it it was obvious the head could twist a tiny bit

Played the ZX4 in a full round today.  The clubs were very predictable.  If my swing was a little less unpredictable it would have been a great day.  3rd round in 20 months expectations were low.  The irons sound great.  Turf interaction was good (it was really wet on course today) and the distances were what I expected.  They are nice to look down at as well.  They don't seem overly obnoxious (if you are coming from blades they may be obnoxious) and I am pleased with them so far.  The shafts are really really smooth and didnt balloon on me....I was a bit concerned about this when I was looking to purchase these but took a shoot.  YMMV.  I hope helps shed light for anyone on the fence.  They would be really really good in a combo set as well.
