And in the US we have been fed a heavy, heavy dose of stroke play as "normal" golf.  Which is odd to me as both HS and college golf are matches.

 

I like it.  I don't think TV likes it.  It is harder to "tell the story" of the match when they must switch back and forth between shots and groups to keep showing action.  Might do well to adopt a more Euro Tour approach for the match play and see if it works better showing fewer shots and more in between.  Would also help if they all just played faster and there was less time between shots.

College golf switched to using match play for the finals back in 2009. Has worked out well in getting more coverage with the finals now on Golf Channel. But still seems a bit odd to use a format that hardly any of the schools play during the season as those events are nearly 100% stroke play.

We all have different experience. Match play was certainly the overwhelming game of choice when playing for a little (or a lot) of money. The first tee negotiations were legendary, in my experience.

I think it satisfies those who need to gamble and can't play for the joy of golf(internal pressure)  sure it might keep you in it a smidge longer but I'd take stroke play as the truer form ......jmho /YMMV

I miss the pressure of the single elimination bracket. Every shot meant just a little bit more right out of the gate. Dove Mountain was also a much better golf course.

In those cases, I'd turn it into a 1 v 2 match. Those were fun, and I don't ever remember losing against 2 amateurs. They think they have a chance, but it just doesn't work out that way. They would both have to play their best games of the year and I'd have to play the worst - all at the same time and place in the Universe. The whole point is the challenge. I get bored playing now with no goal, no challenge.

I don't get the appeal of this expensive country club, ugly catch fencing & paths in view on a lot of holes and relentless traffic noise on most holes. Combine that with holes that are a pretty boring hodge podge, especially for matchplay 

 

A venue change would make it more exciting I think

Go to Austin. This is central Texas in a nutshell. And relatively speaking, the Hill Country IS one of the prettier parts of Texas. If that gives you any indication of how generally ugly it is there.

At this level are seedings really a factor?  In this format,  on a single 18 hole day , anyone can beat anyone ......I get the need but you'd might as well do a full field blind draw......again , at this level......these guys are good!
