Bryson testing prototype driver at Augusta

When it comes to Cobra I always go to my man Robo.  It would be nice to see him allowed back on here but I'll pass the info along, See below

FROM THE DESK OF ROBOPTI ....

I got up this morning to several emails regarding Bryson's prototype driver. Although I have not confirmed this with COBRA PIMP DADDY ... I promise you I know what the deal is with the lead tape.

This is very common in long drive and as Bryson's loft is in the long drive region ... It's an absolute no-brainer what they're doing.

The lead tape is there for BALLSPEED increase ... Or at least maximizing ball speed. It was very common with all long drive guys that I've worked with whom include Jason zuback Joe Miller Jamie saidlowski etc etc ... on a long drive head since the loft is unusually low you ideally want to put Mass directly behind impact. Theoretically on a 0° driver the way to figure out maximization of where to locate mass is to fire a laser straight through your impact area and find on the back of the head where that would be. Less than six degrees you will find that that will be primarily on the crown not the sole plate. It was very common with long drive guys to have crown waiting done extremely high. This results in higher ball speed across the board at high speeds and low loft. The gear effect are spinning increases negligible because the loft is so low to begin with .... And nothing has a more dynamic effect on spin than loft.

So in short just looking at that one picture I can promise you he's just trying to hit the ball to Mars.

ROBO HAS SPOKEN  👾:classic_biggrin::partytime2::pimp:😬🤑

That is really interesting info because it would seem to line up/support what MG$ has been writing about the significance of the Neutral Axis in relation to CG location. Not to then mention the fact that the Cobra LTD (the driver he was using and went back to) is one of the only modern drivers to have driven CG down to that axis.

What other drivers are like this? Epic Speed?

The Epic Speed hasn't been tested yet that I have seen, but the list is otherwise short. M1 430, King LTD, XR16 Sub Zero (forward), and Cobra F6+ (forward). The difference is that for all but the LTD, that CG/NA relationship has come at the expense of MOI, whereas the LTD sits at what looks like an MOI sweetspot for forgiveness/performance based on other drivers in a similar place.

Also the note about loft and how lower lofted heads will drive the neutral axis up, making it easier to align it with the CG of the head and therefore create more speed, and maybe what we are seeing is Bryson trying max out his driver by manipulating this relationship in ways that haven't been done at this level before. Not trying to give him credit for anything special, it just makes sense that he could pick up on what is going on with the long drive stuff and want to tweak that for tour play which may involve some unique specs that haven't been messed with much. That could also explain his otherwise pretentious sounding comments e.g. "the physics aren't understood at that speed yet".

Interesting that he is choosing to reduce the bulge on the face because of toe strikes. That is the complete opposite of what Taylormade says you need with twist face.

Depends on what shape and path.  Toe strikes for a drawer with an open face might be helped to turn over with less bulge ( I’m guessing)

Remember what TM reported was generalizations about tendencies based on data collected from a large number of players.  It wasn't a blank statement about what everyone needs.   I'm sure Bryson is only worried about his own miss hit tendencies.

OF course.. I was simply commenting that Bryson is going for less bulge in opposition to that generalization. I found it interesting.

I find it interesting as well.   I was really just addressing the part about  "what Taylormade says you need with twist face."

It wasn't the club that let him down.  It's more like back to the range - and with the irons and wedges, not the driver.  His performance on the approach shots made the driver irrelevant.

He missed a lot of fairways by a mile.. But you are correct. Distance control with shots into the green was really bad. .

The interesting question is which hurt him worse?  He still got 50% of the fairways. He usually makes up for the bad drives by scoring well when he does drive it well.   That's what was really missing (IMO).

Yeah, I think that usual comes in to play more when there is pretty thick rough. With the second cut here being minimal. That is flyer city.. With as much speed has he has with his short iron lofted clubs. I can totally understand the distance control issues.

I look at it like this.   He hit 50% of the fairways and 50% of the greens - BUT from what I saw, he missed a lot of greens even when he did hit the fairway (not to mention the par 3's).  That's why I lean on iron performance as more of a factor than the driver performance.

Fair take.. I would not say you are wrong. I was just not impressed by his driving at all. Which is a bummer. I was really hoping to see hit eat the course up. I think he may be a bit coursed here after some very arrogant statements. lol..
