So after more testing I've decided to switch to the Red 6X tipped 1.5" and playing OAL 44.75". With the JDM TSi3 head this combo is so consistent and I can hit my little 5-7 yard fade higher than my Black 6X/Bullet combo and still get a ton of roll (fairway conditions permitting). So while I am a quarter inch less tipping that what TXG used in their Purple example, I'll say this tipping the Red really works for those who may struggle handling the Black. The numbers between the two (for me) are basically a wash and the Red, even tipped as much as I have is a little easier to swing than my Black 6X is un-tipped. FWIW my SS in the testing averaged 108 mph/ 161.7 Ball Speed.

I love my Ventus Purple, I have plenty of Swing Speed to handle the black, but never really felt in control of it.  My SS ranges from 114-120.  I prefer the stiff handle of the red, something about it works well with my swing.  That feeling has always worked well for me.  My launch was a smidge higher with the red than with the black, and spin was really close, I think the red spun just a tad more on average.

The purple produces a nice repeatable straight to cut shot that is my preferred shot shape.  Bad swings go straight (but rarely left) and good go straight to cut, but rarely too far right.

I agree with everything you've written here. I haven't missed a fairway in the three rounds I've played this combo.

Been following the tipping adventures of @driveandputtmachine and @nitram   and have been interested in Ventus after a brief foray with the Red in a 3 wood.

Had a driver shaft fitting today and tried a number of shafts, though it was mainly Ventus vs Graphite Design. It was interesting as I hit several shafts well but also with too much spin, including my current gamer, a AD VR 6S.

Nothing beat the Red for me. What surprised was I was swinging the Ventus Red at 106 mph, consistently a solid 3-5 miles faster than the others, and getting better contact and ballspeed. And heavier was optimal. I was faster and more accurate with the 70g Red versus the 60 stiff or 60X. The fitter noticed it right off and didn’t tell me. He gave me another 70g shaft (MMT) to try and I was faster with that one too (103) vs the 60g shaft, but then I rotated back to the Ventus Red 7 and it was at 106 again. As I am in my mid-50s, I was pleased.

The fitter was studying the video and said my transition was not as rushed and so my weight shift was more on time with the heavier shaft, and beyond that, he said the Ventus Red just suits me. I like the Blue too but it does feel different from the Red. I would try the Blue in a fairway.

Ordered a 71g Red stiff that I likely will tip a little as I want the driver head to play heavier than what I hit today (about 202 grams vs 195 today). Didn’t get to test any tipped shafts. I was thinking 1/2 inch tipping but maybe an inch would be optimal. It would be only to account for head weight and make the shaft feel tighter to me. Last time I hit a Red 7S in a Mavrik Max 3 wood, it felt great and went far, but a little too kicky at the bottom. I assume that shaft was tipped for a 3 wood, but I don’t know because it was second-hand and over-length too.

SO, Just to give you some background.   I have a grip that I cut the butt cap out of to use when testing shafts..  Gripping down doesn't work as well for me because the feel isn't quite right.

I tested the red without tipping in my demo.  I knew it spun too much, but the feel and center contact was sooooo good.   So I ordered a Ventus Red from Will Peoples and off we went.  First went in with just over 1/2 tipping and grip slid down to play 45".  Numbers weren't much different.  Then went to just over 1 inch tipping.  Then finally went the full amount to 1.75".

So the red tipped gave me similar numbers to the black.   Just a little more launch, and a tad more spin.  The contact was better than the black, so all in all the distance was better.  As was the dispersion.  Once I settled I then cut the butt of the shaft to 45 without the grip, then I installed the grip.

Making a "cheap" grip with the butt cap cut out so I can slide the grip down farther in my testing has made me feel better about tipping expensive shafts.   Before the whole gripping down just never felt correct and I messed up a couple of expensive ATTAS shafts back in the day because of this.  Luckily one I was able to use in a 3 wood for a little while once I slapped some extra weight on it.

I will say that I previously always played Ping Drivers without a CB shaft, and most everyone knows that Ping drivers are heavy and Callaway drivers tend to be light.   I have some lead tape on and around the slider in my Epic Max LS, I just need to weigh the lead tape and decide on it's placement so I can order a new weight and an additional weight to get my head to the weight I want without lead tape.

In the pic it is about 1 inch from the E in Velocore to the adpater.

Have the red untipped.  So far so good and fascinating that this thing refuses to go left with a supposed softer tip.

I just made this switch, and im kicking myself because i should have been in the red the whole time, its just the perfect profile for me (modus 130, motore vc ts .3 come to mind, stiff butt and mid, but a little give in the tip)  Black felt great and results were mixed. This is where i think matchups matter. A black in a low spin head probably wasnt the best choice, the red allows for just a little bit more lead deflection, adding a little dynamic loft where as i think the black would have matched up better for me in a high moi head with cg further back. The feel isnt night and day different, both really stable, the black just feels like it requires a bit more horsepower.

I've received a couple PM's about what I've written in this thread and I want to make something perfectly clear. I am not anti Ventus Black, at all. It has performed better than any shaft I've used in over 40 years in golf. However the Red (tipped appropriately) can offer very similar results while being a bit more user-friendly. In all honesty I can't say for sure I won't return to the Black as I am still in the "course" testing phase. But for now the Red is performing as solidly as the Black has for me over the past year or so, and has yet to give me a reason to switch back.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Had my second range session with newly installed red and wow it was poppin today. After Ive had some time to further evaluate, moving from a black 6x to a red 6x....

Red definitely feels softer. Mine is tipped an inch but wish I would have done 1.75, or possible moved to 7x. Even tho it may have FELT like it was a little looser, i definitely got better results vs the black. Overall, higher launch, but spin stayed down. Much more stable high ball flight that i was looking for.

If you are considering making a similar move, dont be afraid to tip the heck out of it, especially if you stay with same weight class.

Interesting. A 5 S would be calling my name.

Got fit into a Ventus Black 6s at PXG. First range session and it is incredible! So solid and so straight. Just does not want to go left or right. Just a nice baby cut that goes. Very easy shaft to play at 100 SS. Can’t wait to get it on the course.

It is fantastic. I have been on the road for 3 weeks — had not hit a golf ball — and got out to the range yesterday. I should take a photo of the strike pattern on my driver. It is amazing how often I am hitting the middle of the face. I would say it is a combo of the shaft (70g version) and I really like the Epic Max LS head plus the weight I added, but this is a great fit. I hate shafts that feel really stiff, keep in mind, but I don’t want them to feel sloppy. It feels quite stable. I was worried I would not like the stiff handle. But it feels great. To me, it is like I basically created a friendlier Ventus Black. Don’t have to go after the Red to get excellent results. Easy to load. The only thing the tipping seemed to do is lower the flight a little and cut spin. Doesn’t feel stiffer to me.

I would try before you buy as I would not have naturally picked a 70g shaft tipped 1.25 inches but it was noticeable how much better I was distance-wise with it vs the 60 gram untipped. Lots of ways to fit these shafts.

Thanks.  I've been playing Black 6S this season un-tipped.  Kind of got talked into it.  It is an amazing shaft for hitting the fairway, but I do see times towards end of round or sporadically where I need more launch.  Playing at 45.5" which I would prefer to move back to 45" I think.  Agree, I don't like shafts that feel stiff either and I'm definitely a smooth transition vs. aggressive.  Being I'm typically 105 range and don't practice much have considered attempting switch from Black to Red.  I know I want to stay with Ventus either way.  Thanks again.

I having trouble with too much spin with a Ventus black 7s in a Sim2. (clubhead might be the problem). What is would be the swing speed cutoff range for 7S versus 7X?

MPH around 105-108. Seems like I'm always between an X and S

Love the feel of the shaft though, it sounds like the X might be too stout based on what I've read.

You're right on the border.  If you really go after the ball/aggressive transition, the 7x will work.  Just remember though, when you get tired towards the end of a round and ss slows, the VB will be prone to go low and spin either way.

You sound like a perfect candidate for the Red. Red is more like the Black than the Blue is to begin with, and you can make it even more similar with tipping. As for length I think mine is at 45.25.

Reviving this a bit. Been playing a Black 6S in my driver last year, and Red 7S in my fairways. A comment earlier about the Black being a lot of work later in rounds, sums up my experience. The hood is great, but some days I just can’t handle it as well. The red doesn’t make a crappy swing perfect, but it has made a noticeable difference since switching to it. Would a red in my driver be crazy?  Straight in, or tipped maybe 1/2”?  I got fit for all of these but on course trumps all, as the fitting I swing harder than a normal round. Curious for peoples thoughts.

Ok fwiw…

First I have never liked Fujikura not a hater just didn´t get along with them and therefor non interest.

More GD, PX, Diamana fan.

Tried a tour players blue 6X when he had it in play some years ago - well nice… nothing special.

Until.. I start reading about the trimmed Red..

Long story short got a 6S and did the full monty and some extra .. 2” tiptrim in to a TSi4/10 (C2) @45.25”

Played AD HD and AD DI before.

First- the sound changed to the even better- more muted

Performance: flat high bombs, both draw and when lowered powerfade.

Very easy to control.

I am making swingchanges gone from 97ish to now 105-108 (aiming for 112-114) and it is perfect.

Yes I am longer but what impressed me most is the control.

Got a 7S coming and will do the same thing with my TSi3/15.

That seems to be the consensus, the red seems to be the way to go for me…. I have no clue how much to tip it, since I don’t usually need to tip drivers.

From a launch and spin perspective, a 1.5 to 2 inch tipped red appears to perform about the same as an untipped blue.

That's what I saw in testing. But there is zero scientific basis...just hitting both a bunch, in the same head, and then collecting a handful of quality strikes with both.

If you don't like blue...like the feel of the red, but need launch and spin reduction, then tipped red is good.

Black was just a bit too stout all the way through the shaft for me.

Just my experience-

Tipping is like circumcising, difficult to replace once removed.

If significant tipping appears to be needed, you likely chose an inappropriate configuration to begin with.

Got the red into play for my first round, and results were kinda mixed.  Hit some long drives but my right miss is still very much in play.  Switched back to black and think I ultimately feel more comfortable there for now.  Proceeded to hit some very good drives, but right miss still there as the swing just isnt good right now.  The red actually generally seemed to fly lower for me than black, and felt much more active in driver than in my fairways.  The red in my 3 wood is an absolute beast and very comfortable to hit.  The lighter weight in driver felt much looser, but good results were still there so I might play around more next season.  I currently play the red in my 5 wood but am concerned I hit it too high off the tee, but the extra height from the deck is welcome so likely just stick with it.  Ultimately I know its my swing that produces the results, but I have enjoyed experimenting with the Ventus family.

Reviving an old thread.. but really interesting reading here. I’ve made some trades and I’ve come across a raw 7x red ventus. I’ve had the black 6x TR before and it was to stout for me, I could hit it but it felt like it took a lot of energy to swing it and I would hook it a lot.

Ive been gaming the blue 6x now and I’m enjoying it. Ss 114-118 mph currently gaming a tsr3 8* head.

I’ve realized that I need to better my chances of hitting the fairways. To get lower scores I need to lose less balls.. I’m buying my buddies ping g430 max 9* and I’m a bit nervous about spin. I’ve had problems with other forgiving heads where the ball ballooning into the air and just dying.

thinking about tipping the red ventus 1.5” and keeping it at 45.5” so I still can tip it another 0.5” if needed. Would this remind me of my blue ventus or more of the black tr?

main concern is spin, from the txg video I guess I can expect about 200 rpm less spin, which would be similar to the blue ventus.

Any recommendations from the members in here, a few yeara later?🙄

I have a Red 6x tipped about 5/8. Playing 44.5 in a Callaway. Did not work for me but SS is less. I thought I may get launch I wanted but not so. What are you looking to achieve?
