Do golf courses allow you to postpone tournaments due to rain?

Recommended Posts

We have a 2-day 32 player tournament this Thursday and Sunday in Irvine, CA. The forecast is that there will be light rain or showers on Thursday for most of the day. Our organizer is having a hard time moving the Thursday round to Thursday of next week. The golf course Manager says light rain is playable. They said they will wait for Wednesday's morning weather report to make a final decision. It's not cheap either, it is a $100 per person per round.

What has been your experience playing in the rain and regarding cancellation due to rain? I don't want to spend 5 miserable hours in the cold and wet. I have purchased a light rain suit just in case.

I've never heard of a course/tournament committee postponing a tournament due to rain BEFORE it actually starts. The only time I could see this ever making sense is if you were dead in the path of an incoming hurricane.

FWIW if you're worried about playing in "light rain" then maybe you should start looking into sports that are played indoors in climate controlled conditions.

Exactly. I did have a tournament in Florida cancelled some years back due to a hurricane, and I have seen pro tourneys delayed due to weather - but it had to be egregiously risky, lightening or something. But cancelling a tournament (that likely had months of preparation, and that the course cleared fully half its day (in not more) for simply due to light rain? Not gonna happen. Torneys generally get cancelled when there is actually potential danger to golfers and spectators, not because it will be slightly less comfortable than a warm sunny day.

Before the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse started galloping across the planet a couple years ago, I travelled a lot for business. Played a lot in the UK, and absolutely love Scotland and especially Ireland. Some wonderfully beautiful tracks there - the grass is this incredibly vibrant green. But for a lot of the year, if you don't want to play golf with at least some rain, you aren't going to play golf.

So just man up, get a good rain suit, and (especially) rain gloves - I'm sure you've heard of them, but if not, they are built to actually get tackier when they are wet. Outdoor sports (golf, baseball, football, soccer) rarely cancel because of weather (weather is pretty much central to the definition of "outdoors"), but the players do adjust their clothes and equipment.

As others have said no course i know would move an event due to potential rain. Or would refund/re-schedule due to light rain that is arguably playable. Unfortunately sometimes you get bad luck with events and have to play them in the rain.

Now if on the day of, you've paid a lot to book and lightning closes the course for hours....I think you'd have a gripe.

It's supposed to be 15°C or 59°F. I think I and many others could survive 5 "miserable hours" out in that.

Those number are technically consider drizzle (and light drizzle at that.) I would not even wear any rain gear myself.

But he's in California. He probably has emergency public service announcements on his phone and on TV telling him to buy a small boat, sandbag his house, get life preservers, fishing boots and they even have detailed instructions on how to open and use an umbrella so people don't sue the umbrella companies because someone got wet because they couldn't understand how to use it.

Being that they are playing in CA, maybe they should cancel the event, call everyone a winner and give them participation trophies.

Isn't there some sort of chant or visualization they could do that dissolves rain clouds? Feathers and candles and some sort of incense would likely be required, but costs should be minimal.

We shouldn’t be so mean and insensitive to this. This is serious business.

They should probably fly in Deepak Chopra for post-round counseling and a seminar on the effects on quantum energy of their bodies from the trauma of the mist at $1,299 per person.

At the very least the players should be allowed to have Comfort Caddies. And the course should have Emotional Support cart girls.

I will tell you this,  the entire golf staff at this course is getting a great laugh at your tournament organizer trying to change the date because of a prediction of rain.

This is going to be a story they tell for years to come. Lol.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

You and Deepak have a special bond.  Likely going to his house for Deepavali next year.  There is a cover charge, of course.
