I heard somewhere that either Charlie picked up golf during covid, or that he only started taking it seriously during covid.  Was a announcer at the PNC maybe, can't remember where I heard it.

either way, he's barely into the start of his golf journy and is already firing under par rounds with a silky smooth swing, trying to compare him to these sweaty top junior golfers that've been getting the Earl Woods treatment since they were 3 years old is silly

If that's true, he started at the right time.  Those kids that start a bit later in life can be dangerous.  My son started a bit too early in life, but only time will tell how that will turn out for him.  Burnout is a Beeesh.

Calvin Peete and Larry Nelson didn’t touch a club until their 20s and still succeeded.

Does anyone know anything about how he's doing compared to the elite, absolutely elite, golfers of his age?

I'd love him to do well, have a career in golf, and I love watching his swing, but it seems he was middle of the pack ish in this tournament and not qualifying for the finals so I'm wondering if he's not as good as I hoped? Our is he perhaps playing against older kids?  Just having an off day (when he shot 80)? I'm judging him too harshly for a kid aren't I?

My friend was looking for a sportsbook to get him winning a major. I asked the above questions and we debated for a bit. In the end we settled on a bet where I have Preston Summerhays vs Charlie to win a PGA tournament first.

Today, that formula of starting that late in life wouldn't  really work in any sport. Especially golf.

Golf isn’t chess. The mechanics of golf is so subjective among every instructor/player, it has not been broken down like chess yet.

It’s so subjective that a person can start from the age of 1 without knowing good mechanics are and never make it on tour. Meanwhile another person can start past 20 and knowing what good mechanics and actually doing them over and over and be able to make it and succeed on tour.

You got Y.E. Yang becoming the first player to break Tiger’s unbeaten 54 hole major lead 14-0 record in 2009 PGA Championship and he started golf at NINETEEN.

To bring chess up again, chess only has two opening moves that have been widely analyzed as the best moves to start a game with and no grandmaster chooses otherwise, mainstream golf instruction can’t even agree on what the takeaway should look like. There’s a chance for everyone.

There's an article this morning on GolfChannel.com about Tiger telling Charlie to "copy Rory's swing".

haven't read it yet but not bad advice, Charlie is going to be shorter and smaller than Tiger looks like. Rory is average height 5'9" and 165 but is still one of the longest hitters on tour.

His advice was to swing as hard as he can but to stay in balance. Same advice Earl gave Tiger growing up.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

It was part of the conversation when he spent time in the booth at the Hero Challenge. He said he can't rotate the way he used to and push off his right foot so Rory's swing and balance is now a better reflection of how he wants Charlie to swing.

I'll still predict Charlie will win a PGA tour event ...

I'm talking about mechanics in golf, you still got guys like Matthew Wolff making it on tour and winning with his "bongcloud opening" takeaway. Y.E. Yang started golf at 19 and still became the first golfer to beat Tiger's 54 hole lead major streak, and in 2009 when he did that, the competition was just as good as today.

Can you even picture someone starting chess at 19 and beating Magnus or Fischer? It's not possible. Because the way chess is taught and learned now is infinitely more objective than golf. Heck, the "straight-back straight-through" putting stroke is still taught today, and that's physically impossible without a 90* lie angle putter. All the swing instructors on tour can't even agree on whether the club face should be toe up or parallel to the spine at the end of the takeaway.

Most tour pro mechanics are much more similar than they are different. For every outlier antagonists like to point out, there are 100 vanilla tour swings with a ton in common. All of which now are measured in 3D, so yeah, not really a mystery at all

Agreed.  It's like wind tunnel testing for cars - no wonder all the body lines, despite the brand, are generally the same.

Chess is exactly the same same as golf except for the physical requirements.  It's all about the path one takes to find victory and gaining a mental edge.  I think anyone can be great at chess.  And let's face it, a victory in chess is fairly easy.  Not everyone can be great at golf.  Winning or succeeding at golf requires a perfect amalgamation of the mind and body.  Chess requires almost zero physicality.  A chess player just has to show up and sit it a chair.  You're not going to see a kid run home from his friend's house freaking out over winning a chess match.  However, take that same kid and have him break 80 for 18 holes.  He will be dreaming of winning the Masters and won't shut up for a week.
