AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (*** NO LIV DISCUSSIONS/REFERENCES ***)

Pebble Beach and other stalwarts of the Monterey Peninsula are the destination this week as the PGA Tour continues it's run in California with the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. With the players being split across three courses, the cut comes on Saturday and weather conditions often have a part to play. It all honesty, I have found watching before Sunday more and more difficult over the years with the coverage of the 'celebs' at times pushing the real action to the fringes of the broadcast. This year in addition to a reasonable mix of PGA Tour Pro's we have John Allen, Gareth Bale and Aaron Rodgers from the world of sport with the arts represented by the likes of Jason Bateman, Bill Murray and Ray Romano. Amazingly, the PGA Tour website also lists Macklemore as being part of the champions of sport world by virtue of his being a minority owners in an MLS franchise (honestly 🤣).

Seem to remember him withdrawing from The Open and nothing has been heard since. Back injury is what I can remember…

The Crosby Clambake ain’t quite the draw it used to be. Maybe the pros finally grew tiresome of the Carlton dance.

Just anyone calling it to the Crosby Clambake reminds me of Alan Shipnuck using the term over and over and over again in his book on Phil. Once it was kinda funny but by what felt like the fiftieth time I wasn't sure whether I questioned Shipnuck or Mickelson's sanity more.

Unfortunately, the forecast seems to be cold, and raining and miserable on two of the days. They should flip The Genesis and Pebble Beach Pro Am going forward. Give the weather at Pebble two weeks more and it will be better.

LOL, I can honestly say I have no clue what this is about --- I should probably break down and get a copy! 

 

Of course there are some ams who aren't celebs as such but are business world types -- for a few years it bugged me that some of those folks (whom I'd never heard of and didn't care about) were getting air time and the announcer on about what private club they played, whatever.  Didn't seem like that would resonate with us ordinary golf fans, but maybe got the CBS guys some invites somewhere. Seems like less of that (probably shouldn't have brought it up, lol) and less "celeb" coverage on Sunday in particular.  Fine by me. 

 

In the good old days, my recollection is there was a lot less shown of celebs, the usual drama over Jack Lemmon making the cut and I'd be upset that they weren't showing James Garner or Sean Connery hitting more shots - so IMO a few years ago (5-15) they were going way overboard with the celebs vs. the past and to a detriment, BUT in the good old days there wasn't coverage on Thursday or Friday and not all that much on the weekend compared to now.

Maybe.  Or just play it in September/October when the fog usually lifts, and temperatures are occasionally such as to get the guests complaining that the 5 star hotel wasn't built with a/c in the rooms...

As of now only a 50% chance of light rain. I’m seeing this glass as half full! An overcast/drizzly day in Monterey/Carmel beats a sunny day in say, Omaha. (Or a lot of other places for that matter)
 

*I apologize to anyone living in Omaha. Though I’m sure you wouldn’t disagree. Lol

I love seeing the course.  Knowing the Women's Open (U.S.) will be there this summer tempers any sense of "urgency" this weekend, but I'm sure I'll check in if the leaderboard looks interesting or I hear there is an issue with identifying a ball down the cliff in some ice plant.

While the Carlton dance, Bill Murray and Ray Ramano is getting old fast.....the price of entering the tournament for amateurs is between $25-50K that goes to charity.....They'll get a pass.

 

This is the middle of winter in most areas.....The view is priceless.
