What is the best fairway wood from past 5 years?

Pretty sure JT is still using the 915 5w.

True enough, I stand corrected.  I wonder where I saw that he bailed on it?  Maybe just a single tournament, possibly.

Or more likely, it was just a dream I had after letting pages and pages of WRX WITB photos lull me to sleep one night.

IMO the Stealth Plus is amazing, one of the best out there. It's basically the SIM Ti with a different colorway and maybe a bit more forgiveness. Also depending on if you want a pure wood to hit from the fairway instead of the tee, then I'd say the Ping G425.

  • Callaway GBB 2015 10.5* w/ TourAD CQ-6S
  • TM Stealth+ 5W w/ HZRDUS Smoke Red RDX 6.0
  • Cobra Bio-Cell (Blue) 3-4 Hyb 21* w/ Matrix Ozik hM3 Black Tie 95-S
  • Mizuno JPX 923 Tour 4-PW w/ Modus 120x
  • TM MG3 Black 50* w/ Modus 115 Wedge
  • Mizuno T24 White Satin 56* w/ Modus 125 Wedge
  • Titleist Vokey SM9 Tour Chrome 60* 04T w/ Stock Shaft
  • Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2.5

I keep fairway woods for a long time.  Last year, I got my hands on the SIM Ti Version 2 tour head in 15*.  That kicked out my darling Sonartec SS-07 14*.  I wouldn't be surprised if this three wood stays in my bag for a decade or more.  It is simply amazing.

I play the Sim Ti and I’m 50/50 on it. I haven’t found a 3 wood that I truly love and trust. I will say every time I go play my dads clubs, I mash his 917 F so maybe an older fairway like that would be good for me. I love it off the tee and it’s a consistent draw ball which is nice since I try to play a big fade with the driver.  I struggle hitting it off the deck. I’m not sure if this might be contributing but I actually hit it better on course than off the mats. I think it’d a mental block for me hitting a 3w off a mat because I visually feel like I can’t hit down on it so I almost always thin it.

The biggest thing is that I mostly play my 3 wood as a 2nd shot into par 5s. So hitting it off the deck is most important to me. I also carry a driving iron since I run my PW into my gap wedge and only carry 3 wedges. So that takes some thunder away from the primarily off the tee usage for the 3 wood that I hit best off the tee. 3 wood is a club I still have yet to really figure out. My “safe” club off the tee is the iron and my Sim is typically anything that I would hit my driver for but I really need to draw the ball. Something that spins more so I can trust it into greens is definitely something I want to look into at some point. So maybe the titleist clubs like an older 915 F would be good for me.  I’m fairly good at being able to deloft the club and take spin off the ball off the tee so I can make a spinier club work.

1 question with wayyyy too many answers as usual. Wouldn’t a better question be , What has been the most popular or used in the last 5 years?  I’ve still got a pair of FG Tour f5s from ‘16 I believe it was. Seems “the best” is  way to subjective to what one currently has in their bag. #norightanswer

Depends how “best” is defined. If its ease of use and forgiveness, it’s Ping g425 or g430. If it’s looks mixed with playability, I think it would be TSi/TSR. If it’s ballspeed/distance it would have to be TM Stealth or Stealth2.

I'm looking for the 3 wood holy grail and this conversation helped me a lot. I'm a high launch/spin player so I naturaly tend on low spin version at 13.5/14/14.5°.
Primary used as a tee club with mid/low trajectory for windy days when driving is delicate. If it works off the deck it's a bonus!
Here is my opionion of some of the most populars from this discussion:

-----

SIM Ti 15°
Poor feeling, face close std, low spin, poor forgiveness, great tee shot, deep face, poor performance

SIM2 Ti 15°
Average feeling, square face std, mid spin, great dispersion, great tee shot/off the deck, deep face, good performance

RADSpeed 14.5°
Superb feeling, face close std, high spin, great off the deck, shallow face, good performance

TS2 13.5°
Great feeling, face close std, high spin, great of the deck, mid face, average performance

Srixon ZX 15°
Superb feeling, face close std, low spin, good trajectory, great tee shot/off the deck, deep face, not adjustable, very good performance

Callaway XR 3 Deep 14°
Superb feeling, open face std, very low spin, poor forgiveness, incredible trajectory, excellent tee shot, deep face, not adjustable, very good performance

Ping G425 LST 14.5°
Poor feeling, square face std, high spin, great off the deck, shallow face, poor performance

Callaway Epic Flash SZ 13.5°
Great feeling, square face std, low spin, great dispersion, good trajectory, great tee shot/off the deck, mid face, very good performance

Callaway UW 19°
Superb feeling, open face std, low spin, incredible trajectory, great tee shot/off the deck, mid face, very good performance

-----

The best performance I had was the XR 3 Deep, Srixon ZX and Epic Flash SZ for the 3 wood spot.
The XR 3 deep with more forgiveness could be easily the best of the bunch as a driver backup, he has the best ball speed, best trajectory and is incredibly satisfying when hit on the sweet spot. Unfortunately toe miss ends too quickly left OB and he's almost useless off the deck.
The Srixon ZX with a square face or an adapter could also find his place in my bag. It's very good for both tee shot and off the deck. It launch the ball high with low spin for a strong ball flight. The close face is a real pain for me as I'm always fighting to do not overdraw it.
For the moment the Epic Flash SZ is in play. He's not the best in any category but is a good performer in all of them.
I plan to try the RADSpeed Big Tour next, the standard version is very good but the close face and high spin is unplayable for me. The Big Tour should fix both issues
For the 5 wood spot the Callaway UW 19° is one of the best club in my bag. It's an incredible wood and I will probably try a 17° as 3 wood also.
